Using Toyota oil filter for Maxima?

Using Toyota oil filter for Maxima?
Well, a question came to my mind when I was doing oil change on my Maxima the other day.
I have like 10 Toyota oil filters bought as a bulk package a while back at $3.99/ea, but I had to buy a Nissan oil filter for like $6 at the local dealer for the oil change.
When looking at them, I was not sure why I cannot use the Toyota oil filter for the Maxima. The Toyota oil filter is for my Sienna (3.3L V6) and it has double stage filtering element and anti-drainback valve. Sounds just as good as the Nissan oil filter.
The only possible problem I can think of is the potential thread fit issue. I can compare and see if there is any difference.
But as a general question, can I use Toyota oil filter for Maxima/Nissan? I see no reason why not unless there is something serious different between the two.

Yah really, the 1.8L in my celica held 4.25 quarts, I always thought it was odd how little oil the vq35s held. I guess thats they reason they had a oil cool stock.

Hey, found this thread on a search after I did an oil change on my friend's 2003 Toyota Matrix today. I got the Toyota 90915-YZZF1 filter for this car, which is the long-life filter (5,000 miles) Toyota sells for the new Matrices, and it is sized exactly the same as our Nissan 15208-9E000.
I went on the Fram catalog to find the Fram orange equivalent, which was PH4386, then I compared the gasket inner and outer diameters to the Fram equivalant of the 9E000, and the 9E000 only differed by 0.02" with the gaskets.
Not sure about you guys, but here at Canadian Nissan dealers, the oil filters are quite expensive, are Made in China (if cost was an issue, shouldn't Made in China units be cheaper vs. Made in Japan????? HMMM), and the recommended replacement interval is only 3,750 miles.
The Toyota oil filters are made in Thailand which is not ideal also (I prefer Made in Japan units!), but I'm thinking this might fit our VQs if the gasket diameters are only hundredths of an inch off. I have a good impression of the 'Yota filters since I'm a former 3rd gen guy and they served VE30DE owners well.
Thoughts?

I want to try the Toyota one for it's ability to last at least 5000 miles since I use synthetic and usually swap Nissan filters every 3750 miles. I was hoping by posting, someone could confirm that the 90915-YZZF1 could fit a VQ, but I'll just pop in to see my Lexus parts guy later this week to do a cross-reference confirmation (and if it checks out, I'll buy one to be a guinea pig and report back here).

Do you mean you're using that puny 15208-65F00 filter? If so, you should be able to put in the 9E000 filter, which is longer and bigger = has more filtering capacity.

Here's what I have been doing for about 180k kilometers. I used to use the mobil 1 m1-105 filter. Has the larger capacity, has the same drainback valve, but it used synthetic fiber. I found out about this filter in the fluids section of this forum. But Mobil 1 disco'd this number. So I cross referenced to Wix and got the number 51381. Now wix is a damn good filter so no problems there. But I went one step further and cross referenced that Wix number with amsoil. They use synthetic fiber in their filters and have an amazing warranty on the filter. The amsoil number is EA021
Ea Filters designated with product code EaO are recommended for 25,000 miles/one year, whichever comes first, in normal service or 15,000 miles/one year, whichever comes first, in severe service.
Now I don't leave my oil in the car for 25k miles. But with these filters I go about 12k kilometers and the oil still looks pretty clean. I use 0w30 castrol synthetic.
Wix Specs...
Style: Spin-On Lube Filter

Outer Diameter Top: 3.660
Outer Diameter Bottom: Closed
Thread Size: 20X1.5 MM
By-Pass Valve Setting-PSI: 13-19
Anti-Drain Back Valve: Yes
Burst Pressure-PSI: 275
Max Flow Rate: 9-11 GPM
Nominal Micron Rating: 21
OEM size specs
Style: Spin-On Lube Filter
Service: Lube
Type: Full Flow

Height: 3.402
Outer Diameter Top: 2.685
Outer Diameter Bottom: Closed
Thread Size: 20X1.5 MM
By-Pass Valve Setting-PSI: 8-11
Anti-Drain Back Valve: Yes
Beta Ratio: 2/20=6/19
Burst Pressure-PSI: 363

Nominal Micron Rating: 21
So the bigger size gives you the same capacity and the same flow and basically the same bypass valve.
If you want to retain OEM size but a different OEM supplier, then you should be buying acura oil filters from 02-11 Or Mazda, or mitsubishi, which all use the same filter as the Maxima.
The larger filter is from older Mitsubishi's, Hyundia's and Mazda's

Interesting. I guess that's why my local stealership used a Napa (made by Wix) filter. Nah - I am sure it was just cheaper by accident.

Thanks Igzy.
I just confirmed that the 90915-YZZF1, even though it's the exact same size as the Nissan 15208-9E000, will not fit our VQs because the threading is different, so I shall kibosh this idea.
Wix it is for me after I finish all my Nissan ones, though all the Nissan oil filters I have in my stash are older Made in Japan units. Hope these ones don't have cardboard end caps in them.

I cut open a good old "Crappy Tire", (Canadian slang for Canadian Tire), filter and was impressed with it's internals. I've been using them for 2 years now and just got an analysis report back from Blackstone that was quite good. Unfortunately, it appears that they have changed suppliers. The old ones had a compression spring for a relief and the replacements do not. This can be seen by looking into the filter. This leads me to believe that they are entirely different filters.
Since Purolator seems to be difficult to track down here, I'll probably buy a Napa gold and cut it open to see how well it's constructed.
