Hey guys, i was wondering if anyone has used MSD or Accel on their maximas? i searched the two sites and they claim to not make anything particular for a maxima.Has anyone installed msd or accel in their vehiclesx? If so could you tell me the needed parts to do so?

Well, since all VQ's do not have distributors, I highly doubt that there are any performance ignition parts in the classical sense. However, I believe someone makes a "performance ignition coil" or something along those lines, but I do not know if it really does anything. If anything, getting your ignition timing set forwards 2 degrees might give you a little bit more throttle response, but, once again since we don't have distributors, that needs to be done along the lines of the ecm ala consult II or equivalent.

i realize that, i was wondering about getting more spark and better starting.thats basically all i wanted it for nothing to do with throttle response but id take that too seing as how im going to be changing coils shortly.

there is a company that makes a "better" coil (or so they claim). I cannot remember the name brand off the top of my head.

HKS is supposed to make something that you add to the existing ignition system but I'm not sure if their claims have been proven or not. Sold by Stillen

there is also Okada plasma direct coils, at about 1k per set...

Ahh ok, sorry. Since I am assuming you have a 2k, changing the coils may help to provide for a better spark if they are still original. As you know, pretty much all of the 2k's got a bad batch of coils. Had three go completely out on me, each within a month. And I mean completely out enough so that the ecm told me which one was misfiring.

Yeah HKS does make a capacitive discharge ignition box that will work our setup. MSD and Mallory have similar capacitive ignition boosters! Stillen claims the HKS Twin Power is good for 4 hp!

The stock ignition system on the Maxima is good for over 400+HP. If your having starting issues, look elsewhere before you waste your money.

http://forums.maxima.org/all-motor/5...ks-vq35de.html

Has info pertaining to 4th, 5th, and 5.5 gen (or 6th gen for that matter).

If you want to increase spark and you don't know why, then you should leave good enough alone. If it's not broke, don't fix it until it is.

Really? I have a 2k with 138k miles and I've never had a coil problem. My brother's old 92 though, that had coil issues. I think it's a somewhat notorious problem with Maximas over the years, but I definitely wouldn't go so far as to make the generalization that "pretty much all of the 2ks got a bad batch of coils."

OP, I would stay away from doing coils unless you're told you have a coil that's gone out. If you have a starting issue, get some specifics and search on here, or take it to someone who knows what they're doing and have it diagged.

there is almost zero need to get aftermarket ignition unless your doing 400+hp and have spark blow out.

10-4 i have no starting issues really, except once in a while it sounds as if the battery is almost dead an i know its not cause its brand new for one and its been tested for two, it just has a sound that sounds like a low battery but still starts....
