I can't wait man! Not too worried about the drone, I'll just turn the radio up.

I have a plan to mitigate the drone .. depending on how I feel about it once it's installed.

Will have the install pictures and some sound clips up by tomorrow. If it doesn't rain on me too early. The exhaust piping is pretty big in person than seeing the pictures. I'll take the sound clips with my HERO and my camera. It always better to have two different way recording the sound. Gives people an idea of what it will sound like. About the drone I will be recording driving normal in city and flooring till 60 because I do not like to speed on highways.

Does anyone that has this installed have the OEM exhaust manifolds? I've heard a few saying there was some drone but it seems they all had aftermarket headers. I was wondering if that would play any roll at all? Or will there still be drone nonetheless?

The headers/Ypipes that we have available for our cars not only completely change the tone and increase volume exponentially, but tend to drone from 2000-2600 rpms or so. It's mostly unavoidable... if your exhaust is loud enough to hear at WOT, you'll hear it in the drone range.

A car with stock manifolds/Y-pipe will be immensely quieter in the first place, but you may hear a tiny amount of drone in the right RPM range.

Hm, interesting. I forgot to mention that I'll have a Cattman Y-pipe installed as well, which from what I've heard gives a nice tone to the exhaust, should be an interesting combo (sound wise).

Yeah I linked these earlier in the thread, but here are a couple of links of how it sounds with cattman headers/Y + test pipe and 3".

If your Y-pipe is unequal length, it may sound more like this

Just wanted to note a couple observations with my 3" Catback installed.

1) I can actually hear the intake sucking more air than it used to (installed headers and catback all at once) I have a GAB'ed intake w/ Aaron's spacers, and I think it sounds so nice now.
2) It's really difficult to get the exhaust in just the right position so that it's not rattling where it goes over the rear suspension parts on certain bumps etc... still, not complaining hehe... I'll get it right eventually with enough tweaking.
3) AMAZING sound, and noticeably more power with the headers and 3" on, especially in the high end. Now I just can't wait to get my VAFC II and Wideband o2 in a few months

-sound clips to come when it stops raining around here...

Use a hose clamp to alleviate some of the banging over bumps etc.

hmm, i seem to have the rattling solved, but my muffler/tips don't sit completely level. GAH! And the right side tip is sticking out slightly farther than the left.

I found supporting the rear muffler with only the rear hangers and positoning the RM forward or aft til no contact was made worked best for me....lube the clamp bolts threads and tigthen it enough so there's no movement in the junction and install the RM hanger with the bolt (side). Then finish tightening up everything I also modded the hangar support rear of the resonator with some extra shockeye bushings to limit the side to side sliding movement which shows up during hard R/h turns....mines as solid as a rock and the volume will reduce as the carbon deposits collect inside the resonator and muffler....the sound becomes more mellow and smoother....it took mine about 1000 miles....Post reply #443 in this thread has picture's if interested!

Hello,

I am interested in getting in on this deal but had a couple of questions to Brian. Called him and left a message. Hoping to hear from him soon. Basically my question was out of the 2 set ups which one is better recommended to provide better performance, sound, and yet pass emissions. Here in MA they are a awful when it comes to that stuff. Just don't want to deal with that headache.

Thanks,

I also live in MA and I'm almost positive both systems pass federal emissions, the 3'' gets better power, and sound is your own personal preference.

Just got the 3'' installed on my car...sounds great but can't wait until she breaks in! You can definatley feel the power increase and I only put on a catback since I drive 80 miles a day I didn't feel like listening to too much drone, but I would say I am pretty pleased with it overall. The only thing I'm not too sure about is how to stop it from rattling...the 90 degree bend right before the straight away to the back is hitting the heat shield, but only when I start the car. I think I am going to try spacers on the hanger on the back of the resonator because it's probably moving around. Any suggestions?

good point. I too drive about 100 miles a day. maybe just the catback muffler would do the trick. also looking into buying his intake. any opinions on that?

Did anybody had to remove the two plates that supposed to be underneath the b-pipe where the resonator sits. I had to take those out in order to fit my cat-back. Is it bad to leave it off the car?

About the cat-back, It sort of gotten quieter and I can feel the power increase.

I've seen some remove the light, sheet-metal cross-pieces that are there to keep the stock system from falling on the highway when it rusts off, but DO NOT remove the heavy stamped metal structural piece that's bolted under the car just forward of the resonator. It can be rotated 180 degrees to provide some additional clearance if that's useful, but this part is key to the structural integrity of the vehicle and should never be removed (while driving).

Thanks,
The catback doesn't effect emissions, that's taken care of before the exhaust enters the b-pipe, so emissions laws don't matter with this part. If performance is the priority, the 3" system is the clear choice with a VQ35DE motor. Sound is subjective, so I can't say which system you'd prefer. This system is a bit deeper in pitch than our 2.5" system, but volume and tone are similar.

I don't have the required posts to start a new thread.

Can someone help me? I was just laid off Friday from my job. I have an 03 Maxima with 185,500 miles on it. The job I just lost I have had for just over 3 years. I had a company car and never drove the Maxima. I may have put 10,000 miles on it the past 3 years. Before this job the Maxima was my work car for outside sales.

As mentioned it was rarely driven. I have developed a significant exhaust leak in the past few months. When the car hit 101,000 miles the service engine soon light came on. It was catalytic converter #2 of #3 that was triggering it according to my Nissan dealer. They wanted $900 to replace it. It didn't effect the car's performance or gas mileage so I didn't fix it and the tech said it was nothing to worry about. My only issue was passing an emissions test.

I am guessing the leak has come from rarely driving it. If I move it to the street the water from not letting it warm up has rusted it out.

The car isn't worth much, but its still in great shape and I need a cheap fix to make this car not sound like a POS. Going with OEM stuff to fix this will cost way too much. This is now going to be driven and I need to find a solution.

Any suggestions would greatly help. PM is fine or if someone can start a new thread from me that would be much appreciated.

In addition to reviewing post #443, make sure the resonator is installed right side up. It looks like its straight, but its not (quite) and if its put in upside down the entire system is thrown off enough to make it rattle. The instructions point out that the welding bead (a mark we put on the tubing intentionally to reference this) at the front of the resonator section is supposed to be at the 12 o'clock position. If its at 6 o'clock, the system fits, but there's no way to make it fit perfectly.

Not to pee on anyone's parade, but this comes up often and I have to ask how anyone can tell the loudness of an exhaust from a sound clip? Turn up the sound card (or the recording device), its loud, turn it down, its quiet, but this has no relationship to the actual car...

Sound clips provide limited insight on pitch and tone, but they are pretty useless for volume.

Just like a dyno, its just the thing to ask for. Its not specific for anyones car or mod setup, but we just have to ask.

Brian, I tried fitting with that part on it and it bangs every time I take off or I floor it.

I'll call you 2morrow. I was thinking about buying some rubber thick washers and put them on it to provide some clearance and hold it with that. You think it would do the same job as it was doing before?
