Hey guys, my car seemed to be fine on Thursday evening, I drove it to the doctors, then went grocery shopping and heard no odd sounds whatsoever. Today I started doing a full detail, wash, claybar, wash, z5,and z6. I took the car out for a spin tonight and heard a really loud crunching noise when I was leaving the driveway. Did what I had to do and the crunching noise only seems to happen while the steering wheel is moving. I actually stopped at one point and just sat there turning the wheel left and right and the crunching noise was happening. It's only on the passenger side though, so am I looking at tie rods, ball joint or strut mount?
never mind I figured it out. couldn't get the jack under my car this morning so had to get the oem piece of junk out to raise the car. Then I used the floor jack and found this....

Can you explain that first picture? It looks like the spring is unseated from the.. what do you call that, a bump stop? But it also looks like the black spring has another broken rusty spring half way around it. What is that?
Snows. Dude, it's time to ditch the snows. It's 90F (32C) in the Northeast today.
Coilovers. Think of it as 3 months of car payments that you're not making.

I just put my summers on. I was lucky that a guy around the corner had a spare front suspension set up for me so I now am the proud lendee of 01 GLE springs and shocks on the front end. Holy 4x4 batman!!
The picture on the left is the spring, broken in 2 places so the spring is actually in three pieces. The upper isolator is there along with all the oem strut mount pieces.
here's the pics out of the car

and the gle stock front suspension on an SE LMFAO at this

That's stock SE springs on Tokico HP Blues. (Actually, don't all the models use the same springs, and it's only the SE that got different struts?) And that's with the same 17" rims as yours, Knight, (sans the titanium look), and OEM sized tires.
i won't need to buy springs, eibach has a lifetime warranty, so it's just a matter of waiting for a replacement set.
You might be right about the car leaning, I'll check it out tomorrow on a flat surface as opposed to my driveway

Damn dude!! That rust is brutal. You should ditch the Eibachs and get some coilovers. You won't regret it. Completely two different rides.
EDIT: Those springs are ****ed up. And only started making noise now????

Did you notice any degradation of the ride quality beforehand? I only ask b/c, not for anything, every now-and-then I have a similar sound when backing out/pulling in small elevations like driveways.
Amazingly, it ONLY happens when backing out/pulling into driveways (I got rid of my every-bump-clunk noise last summer). Screw this, I'm checking my springs right now lol
the only odd thing I noticed over the last week or so was when I went over bumps the shocks didn't seem to be soft enough. They felt too stiff so when I hit a bump the car didn't seem to give. After seeing the damage I would think the car would have been saggy as hell. Even my wife asked me why the suspension felt so stiff but I assumed it was because the winters were still on the car and I had them at 35 psi for -10 C weather.
On the Shiftice.com site it shows the stock height on the front as 28 1/16" and the rear 27 1/4" ... but wow your front looks like its over 30", I would be interested once your a level surface if you have any leaning to the driver side as mentioned in the above posts. I am just glad you weren't out driving at HWY speeds when the springs decided to crumble the way they have ... damn scaring thought
That sucks that it snapped in 3 different pieces. Had to get mine replaced on my 03 Vue twice(under warranty, thankfully), and once was 3 days after we bought the car. When you said crunching sound, I knew right away what it was.

looks like the gap on the front is normal, just measured it at 27.5 to the fender

Or, maybe the front is lifted abnormally because the rear is lowered.
that could be it, or it is high because the shocks and springs were taken off the car as a unit and stored that way for quite some time. Nissann says the front fender should be 28 and change from the ground
I doubt they broke because of some light surface rust. They broke because I drive my car hard and the city I live in doesn't fix roads.
