Modifying 4th gen struts to fit 5th gen? Anyone do it?
Looking at getting some 4th gen aftermarket struts (KYB GR2s) for a 2001 Maxima.
Has anyone here modified 4th gen struts to fit a 5th gen? What was involved? I know Brian Catts did or may still do it for the KYB AGX.
Also, I understand that the 4th gen springs work on 5th gens, however the rear springs are skinnier than the 5th gen version? What is required to make them fit properly?
Thanks...

Just out of curiosity, Why would u want to put in 4th gen struts on a 5th gen? Wouldn't it be easier to just get some struts for the 5th gen rather than trying to make 4th gen struts fit? Why go through the trouble of modifying em?

The lower strut mounting bracket is larger on the 5th gen and I believe it's more of a sleeve with small welds here and there...cut welds and slide lower mount off and slide 5th gen on and reweld. Most of the welds appear to be on bottom of the lower mount (which attaches to the knuckle) be careful the strut could explode during welding.....

They may GR-2's for the 5th gen.....why not just buy those?

I guess you wouldnt see the point if you're not in the situation. Im interested in doing so aswell because I found out that the 4th Gen front struts are less than half the price of the 5th Gens, but I guess it's too much trouble...

Just to clear confusion:
On 4th gen front struts, where the strut bolts to the knuckle, the holes are too close together. Cattman welded metal to the strut and drilled new holes. Its clear as day if you look at his website where the pic is huge. I will host the pic for future reference. The front springs will interchange, ride height may change too. Also upper mounts will swap over.
On 4th gen rear struts, the spring seat is bigger than that of a 5th gen. Thus the bottom coil on a 5th gen is smaller in diameter. The top of each spring is the same diameter, the upper mounts are different however. On my 4th gen, I am running 5th gen rear struts with 4th gen seats welded on to fit 4th gen springs.
So for the rear with no mods you can use 4th gen strut and 4th gen spring on a 5th gen with a 5th gen upper mount. Also you can use a 5th gen strut and 5th gen spring on a 4th gen with a 4th gen upper mount.
