3' equal length Y-pipe questions

Hey guys

Recently bought a set of Hotshot headers for the 3.5 w/o the y-pipe and i plan to go 3'' headers back.
Would it be worth it to get a equal length y-pipe made up (same design as the 2.5 Cattman y-pipe) with all the flanges, mandrel bends, welds etc or could i get away with a simple 3'' y-pipe without the circular bend from the rear collector?

Or has anyone matched 2.5" Cattman y-pipe with Hotshot headers
Just wondering on what to do

The equal length Y pipe just changes the sound, the unequal design will actually give your car a deeper grumble and the equal length will be more toned.

YouTube.com/sparks03max. Check out his videos, he has some of the setup you're looking for.

In your position, I would honestly just do a standard un-equal lenght y pipe if the shop is willing to slash the price a good deal for leaving out the extra loop. From my limited research, equal length piping for the Y section is mainly benefitial for sound. Performance wise, the difference wont be that much if any at all.

And actually, if I rememeber correctly, sparks did go to a custom 3" Y section a while back and his ET droped a tad if i'm not mistaken. But dont quote me on that because I could be very wrong. I'll wait for him to chime in.

unequal would be cheaper for sure, i just didnt want to rob myself of some gains by not goin equal length.
As for sparks03max and his y-pipe i couldn't take a chance on it not fitting properly and footing the steep shipping bill.

I can't imagine you'd gain more than maybe 1-2 hp going equal length.

I know that the Cattman Header ypipe section starts with 2.25" tubing at the header collector flange and merges into a 2.5" collector.......and Cattman used 2.25" secondaries to aid in scavenging and keeping the exhaust gas velocity up!

Although I did build an unequal length 3" Y-pipe, I use the cattman Y-pipe 99% of the time because I prefer the sound with an equal length design... Never got to any kind of power testing between the two.

If you will use the car daily, then go with 2.5" from the collectors into 3".

compared to (start it at 34 seconds)

Both with identical intake setups and cattman 3" catback, only difference being the Y-pipe.

One positive thing about the 3" Y-pipe is that the drone RPM range changed to 1400-1800 or so and I got absolutely no drone at my normal highway speeds around 2000-2500 where the cattman normally drones.

I love that you have all these videos, Sparks. It adds a distinct quality to the Org. In a perfect compare, you would have a second, identical run to compare to the first.

As it is, I like the first video better.

Yeah I know they aren't identical, but I didn't specifically make the videos to compare for myself since I can hear my own car.

Would have cost a ridiculous amount of money to have him make it equal length. As I said, my current setup is the cattman Y-pipe.

I just did the cattman exhaust over the past 2 weeks, the 3 inch exhaust with the oem y pipe sounded good, decent power gain feeling a little more reponsive. I drove for about a week before we had time to do the y pipe, sound is okay, i did notice what i thought was a little bit of a low end loss of power, but once i start getting on the throttle i noticed a huge power gain top end highway speeds. I am sure once i do some sort of drop in filter and the intake spacers it will all equal out in the end.

Y-pipe alone on a 5.5 gen isn't a very big power gain like it is on the 3.0s. Beware the butt dyno

You can use flexible tubing to mock up a header ypipe configuration.....it available at Auto Zone and Pep boys for sure.......if you decide to do so you should be able to find flanges.....GL
