Are there any advantages to this?......
I've got about 3K miles on my new 2k2 Max SE, and still sometimes walk outside for no other reason but to just look at it. All three of the cars I've owned have been Mustangs, (sorry guys), and let me say my new Max makes me wonder WHAT WAS I THINKING? Anyway, the car has a (I apologize for green description) steel beam rear suspension. Do all 5th gen Max's have this? Obviously, a fully independent suspension would be best, but is there any advantage of this type of rear suspension. The car drives ten times better than the best car I've owned, so I'm not complaining. The car drives like silk! Any help would be appreciated.

Well the rear beam has been bashed time and time again, there was a rather in-depth post recently about why this is so much better (e.g. advanced) than most beam suspensions you see on mini-vans.
IMHO, the advantage of this is clearly seen on a straight line cruise. I don't know the exact physics of it but it makes sense since both wheels are planted on the ground more than an IRS setup.

The idea is that the two rear wheels always are in the same relation to one another, which aids in handling. It certainly has to give up something in ride comfort compared to an IRS, as when one wheel hits a bump, the other must travel in the opposite direction (up or down).
The trailing arm thingie (I'm not sure that is really what its called) that links in the center of the beam allows the suspension to imitate an IRS. It does a pretty good job, and if you blindfolded somebody and took em for a ride, I don't think anybody could tell how "barbaric" the suspension is.
We just have to live with the stigma of having a suspension not unlike that of an 83 Chevy Celebrity.

Yup, it's like some of us Maxi owners are striving to be like an Audi, and they're stock like that

Re: Are there any advantages to this?......
I appreciate everyone's info on the suspension. I think I might look into a RSB. The rear beam does seem to give the car a nice straight cruising character. Although, I not sure I needed to now that part about the rear beam also being in an 83' Chevy Celebrity.
thanks again.
thanks again.
