I did the a/c controls today and damn does it look good. I also changed my cluster to blue to match. I was very suprised I soldered the a/c bulbs correctly lol it was a mess.

One question though and I know its newbie, but I can't get them damn key ring out!!! I read somewhere that you don't need to take it all apart it should just slide right out, but I cant get it. I got the black outer ring out of course, and got the inner piece about a quarter inch past the ignition, but can not get it to budge past that. What am I missing?

if you're having issues with it just take the trim piece off, otherwise you can break it. Sometimes trim gets stuck together pretty good. should be ok to just pop the bottom steering column piece off, if you did the gauges, you've already been there.

I didn't take the steering column off to do the gauges. I didn't need to. I will try it again after work and try to get the steering column off.

I even tried that last night though, and I could not get the 3 screws all the way out they just kept spinning, but I will try it again.

Thanks Tuner. After the key ring is done, I will post pics of what your write-ups have made my car look like.

Hmmm interesting... If I ever get a car-puter, it'll be way, way down the road. I don't expect to ever get one TBH, I have a pile of other things much farther up on my list of mods. Thanks for this cool to know whats out there.

Holy obnoxious reverse light! I want it!

That would really help me backing up at night because my tints make it impossible to see.

The exact reason I did this. I should install the other side tonight.

Plus I am going to do this to my other car since it also has tinted windows.

If you would be interested in doing a write-up or simply saying what you used, I think it would help the thread. (me)

so what you're saying is you turned the "regular" LED backup lights into super-bright-WTF-searchlight-spotlight LED backup lights?

I used These bulbs: 4W 12V 440 Lumen 60 degree Replacement LED bulbs (halogen replacements)
Name: 71ggmTGRBL_AA1500_.jpg
Views: 82
Size: 90.9 KB

First I took the ring off of the top and removed the lens. De-soldered the 2 wires from the LEDs and then unscrewed the base. After the metal housing was removed, I re-soldered the wires to the LEDs.

I took the loose lens and figured out the size of hole I would need to make. Using the cutting disk and grinding pad on my dremel I made the hole slightly smaller than the LED lens.

After I epoxied the lens to the tail light housing, and let dry for 20 minutes. then took the LED bulbs and base, stuck them back into the holes in the epoxied lens, and then expoxied them to the lens. Let dry for a few hours.

After that was done, I took the prongs from the bulb, bend them outward sligtly and plugged directly into the reverse socket. Ran some electrical tape to hold in place (didnt know how well the lights were going to work, so I taped it as a temp), and installed them into the car...

Shortly I will remove the tape, and remove the connector from the tail light harness. I plan on crimping on some connectors, and connecting them directly to the bulb.

This is the end result.

and both sides done:

Thought so

Nice work dude those are close to the same style I put in my Puddle lights, and those are the ones I'm going to put into the G's reverse lights too

How are they at night, actually? Is it overkill? I'm worried about it being way too obnoxious, perhaps if I can aim them down enough..

simply put... It looks like I have headlights coming out of the back of my car... You can always go for a bulb thats not as bright... Mine are 440 lumens each and you can go for something in the 150-200 range.

I'll probably put the 16 Ohm resistors on them as well to dim it down, same as I did for my Puddle lights.

Also cuts the heat output large, so you don't have to worry bout melting housings
hope you didn't use just Hot glue or something, any length of reversing and you'll melt them. Likely it'll be ok as they're not on long. But they get hot FAST running full wattage.

Maybe I'll grab another pair, my Mirrors are done until the relay's get here, and I'm waiting on a gauge face to keep my LED project going. Everything else is on hold... and the temp outside has sucked. So this sounds like another little project.

OAN Customzlow, I'm in for some actual output shots!!!

Also, they are Epoxied in, so the heat shouldn't effect anything. I've already had them on for a few minutes at a time while taking pictures and whatnot, so I think they will be good.

I will try to get some good output shots in the near future...

Thanks

I am also planning on doing this to my forester (has darker windows than the maxima)

I have an idea how to make the install easier for the next vehicle, but I wont share the idea yet because I dont want anybody else to try it and ruin their lights...

What's with all the electrical tape, etc, and harness on piece on wires then finally, the heat sink that has the actual LED's on it?

I can't make sense of it.

if you read the previous posts you would have seen that its to test the system. The connections will get connectors that will plug into each other.
