AC recharge or something else?
AC recharge or something else?
Every since I have owned this vehicle, the AC has been mildly strong during extreme temperatures.. It takes pushing the accelerator to get some really cold air going. During a 20 mile drive in the heat, it works just fine as normal. But I notice (when the car is very hot) That the AC isn't as strong.. When I start it at night it gets cold fairly quick with out a need to accelerate. Could it just need a recharge? Furthermore, this wouldn't indicate a leak since it has worked this exact way for years would it?
Yes as Dennis said...check the fans both should run with AC on.
Recently with my 00 i30 ,when the car would sit,the temps would rise. And not only that the car would start to get warm, All because ,ones of the fans wasn't working.
It was the one right in front of the engine.
Changed the motors with two aftermarket ones, they work great so far.

Different car, but about a year ago the compressor was replaced. seemed to cure the problem, then the following summer hit, same kind of thing you are experiencing, it was cool if the car was cool, but things got hot, it couldn't keep up. Was a bad expansion valve that was causing the problems. Wasn't leaking, was just not working correctly so it wasn't getting refrigerant into the evaporator correctly
It is possible for the fan motors to be running, but running slow as MadMax07SL said. When the car is not running, take hold of the tip of the fan blade and wiggle it front to rear. There should be no wiggle. Then try to rotate the fan. There will be a little resistance but not very much.
When the fans are on, are they very noisy? There will be some noise but not much more than when they are off. If any of these things are true, then you have a bad fan.
And check BOTH of the fan motors.
