Front passenger door unlock/lock intermittently works

It's been a pretty cold few weeks here in NY and I am not sure if this may have something to do with it, but my front passenger side door is giving some issue. If I unlock all the doors to my car sometimes the front passenger door won't unlock -- this rattle-like sound occurs as though the part that is responsible for "catching" to lock/unlock is not making proper contact. Another anomaly is that if the door is open and unlocked, it won't catch in the door jamb to close. I have to close the door so it rest in the door jamb, and then give it that last push to shut as it's making contact with the B-pillar. Has anyone experienced this or something similar? Any easy fix?

I could take the door apart to see the internals since the panels are easy to remove. A quick "fix" for the unlock/lock issue is I simultaneously press lock or unlock, and with a little gusto, flip the door lock piece in that direction I'm pressing the button to hopefully catch the needed piece to perform the function properly. Was wondering if this is a special feature on the 5.5gens lol
