Near Supercar vs. Near Luxury
Near Supercar vs. Near Luxury
On my way home from work yesterday I spotted an NSX on my tail. We were going about 75 - 90 mph for about 10 miles threading holes in the traffic and swapping position. I tried to entice him into a run, but he wouldn't bite.
I wonder... was he not interested, or afraid of having a respectable challenge from a sub $30K family sedan? Yeah he probably would have edged me out, but I guess I'll never know...

I think the NSX has a 270-290hp engine depending on the year?

IMO, the NSX's appeal comes from a near perfect balance of performance, creature comforts and a simple yet striking design.

I would have probably agreed with you if it weren't for the absolutely gorgeous new Corvette that came out. That thing is very good looking.
If I had 90 grand, I probably wouldn't buy the NSX either. That's M5 territory

i heard the cost to make it was upwards in the quarter mil range...
riiiiiight
I've driven a couple NSX's and road in another. They aren't that great. I was not very impressed at all. Sure, they are decently fast, but there are loads of cars faster and cheaper.
The idea behind that car must have came much past the 20th round of saki. It is not a smart move by Honda other then they can say they make a 90,000 dollar "super" (or lack there of) car.
The car is underpowered. I've never been a fan of mid engine cars. The handling is very biased. 50/50 is ideal, not 35/65 or whatever the thing is, is not. I guess some people like that. I don't I want a car to handle like it is on rails, not like it is on gravel.
The styling is somewhat cool, but you can't say with a straight face that it is not a spiced up, cheap copy of the F348. Ferrari styling, Honda power, and Toyata handling... that is not my idea of an ideal car.
The interior is nice, but not great. Porsche's interior is far nicer, their car does the same job, only accomplishes it far better. MB destroy's the NSX, I'd much rather take an CL or SL over the NSX. There is not one aspect that the Honda would win with... well maybe fuel economy, but what do you expect when the Acura has 6 less cylinders, no turbo's and 300 less horsepower.
The NSX is getting to be an old sloppy car. It lacks refinement. It was nice 13 years ago when it was new, but since then there has been little improvement from the honda camp, however, the Germans have put out everything they can. 7 speed auto tranny's, Sequential Tranny's, Twin Turbo v12's. Crossed Drilled Rotors, super rifined suspension. Handfree electronic operation, from the ignition to the navigation.
The NSX is way out of it's league... way behind. Infact it is so far behind cars from lower classes are passing it. The CLK will own it, the M3 will own it, the Z06 will own it. It's in the Boxter league, and cost twice as much.

The reason the NSX dude didn't bite is because he is 1 point away from losing his license after a half dozen similar incidents.
The NSX was designed as a development platform for street cars. At least that's what the manufacturer stated when the car was released. I agree that there are several vehicles out there that will thrash it. If I were going to spend money in the 100K range, I'd buy a GT40 remake. If I were sensible, Id simply buy a G35 coupe and mod the living daylights out of it.

I outran an NSX in an old 93 Saturn SL2 once. He was on the Chicago Tollway and I was merging on. He gunned it, I gunned it, and I walked away from that chump.....I should probably mention that he blew, what I'm guessing was a head gasket when he jumped on it, as white smoke came billowing out to the point I couldn't even see his car in my rear view mirror!
