My baby is down

Well its official, first i thought it was the broken front motor mount that was causing the 'jerking' feeling when slowing down or going from reverse to drive. So i paid $400 bucks to get it fixed, only to find out a week later that i have a bad tranny... $4200 to repair .. good thing I got a full warranty when i bought the car a few months ago... So i won't have my baby back till the end of next week.. and they have me in a hyundai...lol

Euwwwww, only 79k miles??!! I'm at 82k and the trans is still pretty strong. Of course it doesn't feel as good as when I first got it but still pretty strong. I am also worried about this.

It appears to be an '04 SL 4-speed, those use the 95-01 auto's (ref04a) which is not cool for the tourqe of a 3.5 + the weight of a 6th gen, we're gonna see these failures more and more regardless of being beaten on. Change ur fluid guys, and a shift-kit & tranny cooler would be a good idea also, if I had an 04 and it blew up I'd be all about swapping in an 02/03 4-speed, sometime I'll end up doing that swap I'm sure.

Yeah, you probably wanna make sure your motor mounts aren't broke or wearing out.

04 Maxima tranny

I have the same issue with my maxima. Only mine is dead...shifts into reverse with a violent jolt (something like crashing into a brick wall)...also does the same jolt when shifting into D....won't shift...only seems to have one gear....second or third (cant tell)...most likely third...anyways...warranty ran out in july so im stuck with it...its a shame...these cars are supposed to be known for quality and reliability....any advice from anyone would be appreciated...looked at the stickies...didnt see what i was looking for...
------thanks-------------------------------------------------------------

i did see someone mention putting an 02/03 auto 4-speed tranny in place of the 04 5-speed auto...is that possible??? Is it possible to do an auto-to-manual transmission swap?? If any one already has posted that, Sorry,....please direct me to the thread because i can't find it....

thanks again...

hey I just now registered just to reply because I was/am having the same problem as OP. I have a 2004 automatic Maxima that jumps/jolts/jerks whatever you want to call it when i'm driving and slow down or when i'm switching from Reverse to Drive.

I was first told it was motor mounts, got that fixed for about $300, the problem was not gone. About 3 weeks ago I left my car in for service to get the tranny replaced (tranny was on back order hence the 3 week wait). Got it back last night and I notice the ride is a lot smoother but i'm still having the same problem, it just isn't happening as often and the jolt isn't as violent.

I'm running out of ideas.. what else can it be that's causing this?
