I know this has been said, somewhere on this thread I believe. The tensioner shoe is not the problem it's the design of the plunger itself. For anybody who hasn't done this I would just like you to know you'll have to go all the way down to the camshaft brackets to get the tensioner bodies out. Otherwise, if you just replace the shoe, you'll be making this same repair again in the future. I just figured I'd be the, seemingly, only person to shed light on this.

whine

I love Nissans, but if they will not stand behind their vehicles I don't wan't one. I had a beautiful 07' Maxima with 110k miles and whined the day I bought it 2 years ago when it had 76k. I learned what the whine was and what it would cost to repair and sold it to let someone else deal with it and the CVT transmission that Nissan was forced to extend the warranty to 120k miles. I will miss her but it's not the last car out there. I'm thinking 3 series.

about two weeks ago i start to notice this wierd whining sound coming from the engine bay while accelerating. the noise pitch is dependant on engine speed, so the higher the revs, the higher the pitch. the car still drives fine, and she still pulls hard all the way to redline. but i have no clue what is causing the whine. i checked the power steering fluid since the noise sorta resembles low steering fluid, but it's at normal levels.

the noise seem to be originating from the passenger end of the motor. anyone ran into this problem? i have 67k on the car. i'll try to get a video of it so you guys can hear it as well.
Just an FYI that may help: My wife's 2007 SE, 90+K, started a weird whining about 6 months ago. The dealer "didn't hear it". When you drive a car this long you know the right sounds. Anyway, about a week ago the engined quit suddenly and unexpectedly. Hard to restart, but when started ran as normal for two days. Then all of a sudden the tcs, slip & cel lights came on. When this occurred the car gave a slight shutter as if the o/d was turned off. Misfire? Still ran good, though. When she got home I pulled the codes: camshaft & crankshaft sensor codes. Sensors were not playing together. Dealer replaced. Now no lights....and best of all no more whine. Go figure.

Yea. I've already had my girlfriends '05 SE apart down to the cams. There was no doubt it was the tensioners and guides. The slack guide plastic had slid about 1/8 of the way down the metal and the shoes of the tensioners were nonexistant. Since I did this all myself I saved about $1K but I'm just not sure that the headaches that occurred were worth it . Oh well live and learn I suppose.

I'm done messing with my 4th gen till I'm working full time again but I bought an 04 se 6 months ago. 2 months after I got it the service engine light came on I hear a rattling in the engine by the power steering fluid. On august 4 2014 I'm going 100 miles to nissan to get the codes. I had been there earlier without my car and told them I thought it might be the timing chain tensioner and the said I'd be 2200-2500$$ and I only paid 6000 for the car with 119k miles now 123k. My question is could it be something else? Is that a bit steep for that repair? Any help would be great I'm new to this site and could use the advice!! THanks!

The sound you described does not sound like cam tensioners gone bad. There's a real good video on you tube with great audible sound of bad cam tensioners. I sold mine with it whining loud enough for my wife to notice the sound. From now on I'm having all my used cars I buy inspected. Well worth the $100. It saved me $2500 in repair on one car i had inspected.

Weird Noise

I need some information on the problem. 2007 Nissan Maxima, there was a rattling noise on the passenger side by the tire, under the hood. My A/c wasn't working before a belt snapped off. My brother stated, the A/c compressor cause the belt to snap due to miss out of place a bit..What is the rattling noise? on another note, my a/c quit working. Do I need to recharge it?

I too have been having the noise that would cause one to think that it is the timing guide problem. I have been searching for any options that might make me think it is not. Well, I looked at my oil level tonight and noticed that it was not even registering on the stick. So I added a quart and the noise disappeared. I am going to do a proper oil change tomorrow. I will let you know what happens. Just wanted to throw this out there.

Hey guys, I had this problem last week and because I have an extended warranty on my 07' maxima I was able to get it repaired for just for the deductible of $50, they even fixed my oil pan leak because that was also covered.

So if you have a warranty take the car in NOW!, it's an expensive fix and you have to drop the motor to make that repair unless you have tiny hands and a lot of patience.

I will post the pictures of the work order when i get home today.

The sound my car was making wasn't THAT bad but it does sound about right. it's the timing chain shoe that has worn and needs to be changed.

Mines is fix now! It wasn't the timing chain shoe. It was the tensioner pulley! The bearings wore out on mine and caused all that noise. I would suggest that anyone having this noise in the future should disconnect the alternator belt and start the car up while disconnected. If the noise still occurs this will atleast eliminate the alternator and tensioner pulley. As I look back at everyone videos I think the dealer has been miss diagnosing some people cars causing more of a cost by jumping straight to engine work.

Hi,

So whats the latest with Nissan potentially covering this cost? I now have the dreaded timing chain issue on my 2007 with 98k miles...

I read somewhere on the interweb that a judge certified this as a class action suit, in California I think. I'd like to see if Nissan is found to be responsible to pay for the repairs or do them to all who present a car making this noise. Just another Nissan crappy parts design in an otherwise great performing car.

Can't believe this thread is still alive lol.

Nissan wont pay **** for this issue. They pretty much said it's a fairly common issue but wont pay for the repairs. :\
