Mass air flow problems

My mass air flow has hit the ****, I will get a replacement as soon as I can (Probably Monday or Tuesday) but until then I will need the car. For now the acceleration lags and the car makes a big clunk when it goes into gear. My question is will this damage the car? I understand the car is running some sort of safety map right now since the MAF isn't working but its the clunking of the gears I'm more worried about (Its stuck in 5th gear according to manual mode and when I try to up-shift or downshift it clunks again)

and I know its the maf because I swapped a friends MAF temporarilly

Thanks,
Vik

Any form of not letting the engine run proper will evently do damage..

use MAF sensor cleaner. I highly recommend using it every time you change your air filter. check the wires for corrosion. These things are pretty well designed.
