ABS needing replacement

UGH...my ABS has been acting up. Took it my local trusted mechanic. He informed me the ABS system is shot and in need of replacement. He figured maybe $1300 brand new or about $5-600 used. He is not sure whether the computer must be reset to accept this new unit, but I'm figuring yes since I deactivated the ABS unit so it is not annoying until I get it fixed and the speedometer and odometer went inoperable with it. Does anyone know? He said he can do the work but a dealership will need to reset the computer. He told me also if the computer does not need a reset, he could find a used unit and install it most cost effectively. My Max is an '04 with around 87K miles on it. It hasn't given me any headaches to this point, and I'd really hate to unload it but this cost is not looking to positive on my wallet. Anyone's thoughts or inside knowledge is welcome.
