Viper alarm causing check engine light to come on

Hey has anyone had a problem with the viper alarm causing the check engine light to come on 2009 nissan maxima?

My Viper Smart Start doesn't turn on my check engine light. But after I get into the car and take over with my Intelli key, my security light and electronic steering lock light (yellow-colored "KEY" light) both come on my dash. When I just start my car with the push button, I have no issues.

Is anyone experiencing anything like this? To the other guys with a Viper Smart Start, do you have a flawless takeover?

I want to know if I really have a problem, or if this is happening with everyone.

if your car alarm goes off, does it show you on the SmartStart app?

I have had the Viper VSS4000 installed in my Max. Works great! The only issue is when I get in my car and step on the brake, my security light (red-colored light) and my electronic steering wheel lock (yellow colored "KEY" light) both come on. My car doesn't shut down or anything, so it is a smooth takeover. But it looks like there is an issue. I had Best Buy do the install, and the guy never did this type of car before. I know, I shouldn't have taken it to them, but they are the only ones around that sell the SmartStart. They did a terrible job, with messy wiring. Really sloppy. They called customer service and they couldn't figure it out.

Juggernaut23: Can you help me please!?!? Can you tell me how you wired everything so I can compare to mine?? Thanks!!

You know what i haven't checked my Iphone and see if it was giving me a notice. I'll do that today. Well this Friday i'm taking my car to another authorized Viper installer to see if they can fix this check engine light issue. getting kinda fustrated now its been 2 weeks since i got my car back and that damn light won't go off. I don't want to pull the alarm but i might have no choice.

Guys, the only time I see those lights on the dash is when I dont close my doors when I get in prior to tapping the brake for the take over. Then it trips the yellow key light and the tpms light. But no ill effects.
I need to know which bypass they used to guide you to the correction. I really like this type of system but I hope they fix some of the irritating quirks of it soon.It has the potential to be the best with just a few more tweaks and refinement.

I used the FLCAN bypass by Audiovox. Actually, this bypass is made by idatalink, who I think made the one you are using. My remote start module is a Viper 5101.

If you go to www.flash-it.com, and look up the installation guide for a 2010 Max, that is exactly how it is installed in my car.

There is 3 of them listed in that link.Which is the one you followed? ni3,ni2,ni1?

Iam using the idatalink and i did all 3 of the take over routes. I did the relay under the hood and the door trigger with the proximity key sensor.it only said to do 1 of them but i did all 3 to ensure there is no issues.

After opening the pdf i did the relay under the hood and grounded the purple/yellow wire.I also just tap the break to do the take over every time i get in the car. The pdf says you have to push the start button twice prior but i dont.and mine stays running with no issues.do a reset on the module and try again to see if it helps.

I also noticed page 3 and page 36 say to do the take over 2 different ways. lol lol lol lo

What about windshield defroster and heated steering wheel. Will it be a pain to install?

Did you all have you Viper alarm installed by a Viper authorized dealer or the Nissan dealership? I want to get the 5902 in my whip but have read some stories on here about people not knowing how to install it in the Max and would rather avoid that. Think I'm okay with hunting down a Viper authorized shop and just ask if they've done 7th gen Maximas? Also does anyone have a hook up on the actual alarm system itself? Just seeing if I can avoid paying retail.

2 front windows?? Why only the front two? I Installed the viper 5901 myself and it took about 10 mins to hook my aux 1 to lock switch on the drivers side door and aux 2 to unlock. Aux 1 set to pulsed and linked to arm so when I get put and arm my car it automatically rolls up four windows. And to rol
Them down I just press f f aux to roll them down. To roll them up at any given moment rather than arming it I hit f aux. It was so easy to do and free as opposed to buying the dei window module which is completely unnecessary

I just had remote start installed on my 2011 Maxima and it works great so far, not sure of the names of the components used but I love the way it operates, on mine you push the lock button on the oem fob twice and the car starts, once you enter the car you have 30 secs to push the brake pedal and once you push the brake pedal the ignition switch automatically goes to the on position and the seat and steering wheel go to the set position. I hope this helps and if anyone needs the parts used, I can find out, and btw it took over 8 hours for the install and cost me $450

Thanks. I'm not sure if this is unique or not but I love that it's integrated into the OEM key fob.

I think other people on here have it integrated into the oem key fob, I really like that i dont have to push the ignition button to the on position or adjust the seat or steering wheel, its done automatically when u push the brake pedal when you enter the car. I hope this helps you

Sounds perfect....now that its summer time in Houston, I'm really wishing I had that...I've been using the auto window down and although it helps a lil, I really wish I could start the car for the a/c...

The Avital System is what i have had on my 4Runner for the last 10 years and still works great and am very happy with it. I can't believe that Nissan does'nt offer a Remote Start as an accessory for the car. Any enrty level luxury car should IMO. Having to go to the Aftermarket for it is a PIA.

have you tried using the Viper website to find an authorized dealer near you? i used that and it came up with a long list of options, the first few i called said the same thing they've never done push button start but the 4th place I called had done the new Max's before so it was money. i love the remote start..nothin like having your car already warmed up ready to go.

So if I understand your post correctly, I do not need to purchase any additional module to make the windows roll up automatically when I lock my car. This functionality is built into Viper 5901 and its just the matter of configuring it?

Also, if I use iDatalink bypass module with a viper 5901 and lock the car using Viper security alarm, can I retain all the push button functionality including unlocking doors and popping the trunk using push button on the door handles and trunk release respectively? In other words, can I use my OEM key fob to arm and disarm viper alarm?

I would appreciate if you or someone on this forum is kind enough to help me with my questions. By the way, which idatalink bypass module do i need for my 2009 Maxima? Thanks in advance.

nah the windows rolling up when you lock is a feature of the car. as far as i know Maxima's do not do this, at least mine doesn't. no idea how this member wired up to the lock button to get his windows to roll up/down.

yes you can still use your OEM keyfob to unlock/lock/disarm/arm. just no remote start obviously since theres no button for that.

not sure on which idatalink module u need.

also in case u didnt know, by wiring this up yourself you're potentially voiding all kinds of Nissan warranties in addition to the warranty on the alarm itself. if you ever have any electrical issues with the car they'll open your fusebox see all the splicing and blame that. if its done at an authorized installer they cant void anything

I am an installer and I just ordered the Viper Smart Start VSS5000 for my Max. The reason for this is I didn't want to carry around two seperate remotes being that the smart key is the remote as well. The bypass i'm using allows every to be controlled via data and the added bonus is that the factory remote will also control the aftermarket security portion of the alarm system. The only thing that I can't do from the factory remote is remote start the car, which is what I will use my phone to do.

I am going to do my research as far as using the buttons on the door handles to arm and disarm the viper alarm though. If I can't do this I might consider not doing the install at all. I am one for must having full functionality of all factory and aftermarket systems.

Thanks for your response. So, I guess I would have to pay extra to roll up my windows. I can live without it.

How about the tilt sensor? is that included or do I need to purchase that module separately?

Just to confirm, you are saying that I can control Viper's security system using my Nissan key fob? So, lets say I arm my car by pressing the button on the driver's side door handle, then Viper's LCD screen will show that the car is locked?

If anyone can provide a link to the idatalink bypass module that I need for 2009 Maxima, I will greatly appreciate it.

I am not even thinking about installing this myself. I am buying the unit from Amazon and having one of the authroized dealers in Queens install it for me, name of the shop is USS Auto on Hillside. I dont believe this would void the warranty. Did any of the members here had any experience with this shop? I have been trying to reach out to PearlMax A.K.A Don but can't seem to get a hold of him.

oh, if you're an installer i'm pretty sure you can call Viper directly and they'll help you out. my installer had some trouble with my 5902 and Viper helped them out no problem.

nice part is the remotes are completely integrated. the Nissan keyfob (and the buttons on the doors) lock/arm and unlock/disarm. the only thing missing are the added features of the Viper remote which you wont need to carry if you have Smartstart. carrying around 2 keyfobs IS getting annoying. plus if you get the leather case for the 5902 remote it's comically large

well not sure if the feature isn't available at all, i know theres a window roll-up module (and sun roof open/close) that may be added. not positive if it works on the 7th gen's though.

Tilt sensor is an extra module with extra labor to install unfortunately.

and yeah you can use the Nissan keyfob, you'll see the word "ARMED" appear on your Viper LCD a few seconds later. likewise UNARMED if you unlock it.

honestly you'll probably pay just as much getting the Viper online + install that you would if you just paid for the unit + install at a Viper dealer. They get big discounts on the units so will charge you 300-500 in labor anyway so might as well combine it. Also a few Viper places will not honor warranty on any items purchased online, they state it needs to be purchased directly from a Viper distributor

Thanks, this is most helpful!

I would really appreciate if someone can provide me a link for the idatalink or any other reliable bypass module. Thank you.

I know all too well about the size of these remotes. My Spec-V has a 5902 in it. My opinion is that any car that has a smart key needs to have smart start. It's just so pointless to carry two remotes. I can't wait to get it in tomorrow and get started on it. Seems like a simple but tedious install so will probably just make it a two day project and take my time to avoid any dumb lights coming on.

Amazon or any other etailer = zero warranty regardless of who installed it.

With all due respect you called me late on a Very busy Sunday. Which is a day that most shops aside from the big boxes are not even open. Your call was returned and a voicemail left. Within less than a full days time.

With all due respect you called me late on a Very busy Sunday. Which is a day that most shops aside from the big boxes are not even open. Your call was returned and a voicemail left. Within less than a full days time.
Hi Don,

I just got your VM, thanks for responding. I am trying to call you back, but its going to your VM. I will try to reach out to you again tomorrow. Thanks again.

question guys - i got my 5902 through a viper distributor and installed at the same place as well. if i order a few brand new DEI modules online (tilt, battery, glass-break) and have them installed at the Viper place are those eligible for warranty coverage? or are those items not covered. or even worse, would those void the warranty on the rest of the system?
