about to buy 7th gen got a few questions

ok so I have been lurking the forums since I'v been in the serious actual money having market for a max ( about 4 months) and I came across a sweet 2010 black sport tech package. I just have a few questions before i jump in. but before that some info about the car-

2010 11,000 miles (repod from a guy who didnt pay his bills lol)
windows already tinted (probably threw the avg shopper off the car so works well for me :-)
stillen cai and cat-back exhaust installed already (saving me the time and money of doing it after purchase

so here are my questions? can it play dvds? no one at nissan seems to know lol
with the cai and exhaust what are the pros/cons to having them on? i am a mech engineer new grad and so from my understanding the cai allows the engine to run more efficiently? someone else told me the fuel economy will suffer? i am sure there are other factors to throw in there but generally what are the pros/cons of the upgrades on this ride? the dealer is letting me take the car for an extended test drive tomorrow so i will post pictures once its in my driveway :-) thanks again for your help I have seen for the most part everyone on here is very polite and willing to educate. and I will bless you back with pictures because this ride is gonna get BABIED once it is officially mine. the other debate was a black vs white but i think i settled on the black..although the white joint was DEAD SEXY the black has more of the sleek "dayum what is that" look i want

Hey.. I have a black 2010 sport since July 2011.. I absolutely love it!!

Regarding the DVD .. Check if you see the dvd symbol on the console...Btw you can only watch DVDs while parked unless a mod is preformed.. Hope it helps...

nav package plays them directly from the dvd. Monitor package plays them through the rca inputs in the center console. To use them you will need a plug of some sort, either a cable for an ipod, or your laptop, or something.

other question...so an otto cycle engine is basically an air pump, which is what a car motor is. I know MechE's take thermo 1, I took MechE thermo as a substitute for my Thermo 1 course (damn inconvenient scheduling) and we spent a fair amount of time covering the otto cycle, so as a recent grad you should have a good understanding of the basics. So increasing the efficiency of intake and exhaust will make the pump more efficient. Manufacturers these days usually do pretty good jobs of keeping the intake and exhaust fairly efficient. In the maxima the intake is already a cold air, you can get a short ram air, there are several people here who have made their own or bought one, but generally there will be minimal gains. This is semi true with the exhaust but supposedly a y-pipe will increase the HP, increase efficiency, thus saving on gas, however the cat backs do not do to much to increase horsepower. Most of these mods increase the aesthetic aspect of the vehicle but the majority of people who do these mods also enjoy driving the vehicle, which tends to decrease mileage .

So for a conclusion, the mods probably won't increase the mileage any appreciable amount, but as long as the proper air/fuel ratio is maintained by the ECU it won't reduce the fuel economy either. I would not worry about it too to much, enjoy them for what they are. The real thing to worry about is how the vehicle was treated by the first owner, you are only at 10k miles so you have plenty of time to find the issues and get them corrected by the dealer. If you have any issues, bring it to the dealer and have it looked at. There is no cost to get a quick diagnostic while under warranty.

yes i do remember the otto cycle from thermo (good times). good luck in your studies it only gets more fun from thermo (sarcasm) but this nice paying job i started monday makes the all nighters worth it :-). I thought that the mods at the very least increased the power output. thank you for the responses once again

Haha, i have been out for a while, graduated in December 2010. I was in a similar situation, graduated and then bought a 2010 maxima about a year ago. Depending on what you want out of the maxima, it is a good car. For me I keep thinking I wish I bought a G37. O well, next time around. Don't get me wrong it isn't a bad car by any means, I just hate the CVT with a passion.

UMass Amherst (Main Campus) Chemical Engineering.

The price difference between a G37 and a Maxima shouldn't be much, only a few grand or so. At least in my area, the G37 is a dime a dozen the maxima has become more prevalent in the last year or so but is still no where near as common as a G37. For example, a decent maxima 30k miles 2010 might be 22-25g depending. A G37 similar situation about 25g or so. Take a look around at various high volume dealers.

Ive had my max for two years, bought it brand new in July 2010, Still really like it, its a great car very reliable, reasonable gas mileage, all the creature comforst you need. I feel spoiled with this car, I highly recomend it bc for what I paid for it You honestly cant get much better! I love it so much that I almost traded it in on a Shelby GT500 (used) decided to keep it and get the shelby next month after I start at my new job.

I def will! The dealer is trying to talk me into a 2012 s limited...yeah you darn right its limited in features lol....not to mention the price drop the second I drive off the lot. The answer to all 3 of the question is no unfortunately but its not the end of the world. The pearly white one is at another dealer so he knows ive been shopping around. He has spent the better part of 30 minutes sending me pics of the limited but I am not going to get a car with a marginal diff at best (2010-2012) and lose out on features

The CVT just detracts tremendously from the vehicle. It is great in concept, poor in execution. If it were capable of handling more power, than performance mods would be available to really allow the car to shine. The reality is, the tranny to me feels like it is on the edge of snapping. Obviously this isn't true since nissan would have a big problem on their hands. The engineer in me says, engineers have thought of this and it should be fine, but the person in me says, engineers worked on this and I know they can't think of everything and what can go wrong will. I suppose I can testify to this in practice within an industry. This is just my opinion, I would say you just need to drive it to get a feel for it. Anyways best of luck in your purchase.

Don't fall victim to the crap they sell at the end. The only thing to possibly consider is an after market warranty if you can get one for $500-800 or so depending on what you want for years/mileage. On this car there are a lot of expensive electronics. If just one of them goes it will pay for itself. I have read that the nissan one is not a smart choice since they look for any reason not to pay, such as you need to prove you did the proper factory scheduled maintenance..blah blah blah. I know the magnuson-moss warranty act should come into effect but I have just read that it is simpler to get a 3rd party warranty and use them vs. arguing with nissan. The thing to remember is you can usually add them at any point, for the same price, before the bumper-bumper warranty runs out, it just goes up in price after that point. So don't just jump at the offer they make you, negotiate and go in with some research saying you can buy this warranty from this place for this price. They are negotiable prices at the dealer so make them work for it if you truly want it. If they won't budge, walk away and buy anywhere else. You can pretty much go to any dealer, in person and some of the bigger online wholesalers, and purchase it directly. If you look on slickdeals people will post semi-regularly dealers who are having deals on a brand (nissan, honda, toyota...) These deals can be had at a substantially lower price than most 'normal' dealer prices.

The reality is the simoniz/scotch gard/paint protector.....it is all EXPENSIVE wax/sealant with crap tons of limitations as to the warranty. Just buy the car and take care of it, with proper wash and wax and such, and you should be fine. This is IMO, it is up to you to decide what you find worthwhile.

The other thing to remember is, it is just a car. You will probably be very happy to finish college and get some nicer stuff to show for your hard work. Just don't forget to step back and look the car over, dents, paint work, any weird noises. It is hard not to get completely wrapped up in the excitement and forget about this. If you can't get past an issue or get the dealer to work with you, move on to another maxima, there are plenty of them out there at reasonable prices.

If you have any other questions or concerns feel free post for advice. 99% of the people in 7th gen forum are more than willing to give an honest and helpful answer to reasonable requests and questions.

agreed!! *Claps*

*update*
since then I have driven the g37 and I am seriously torn. I really like both cars but bodywise and features I like the Max. The g37 just felt much quicker to drive and so I am genuinely torn. I am 6'3 so that makes me lean torward the maxima by default. I have always liked the maximas I just wonder if I am ever going to resent the cvt limitations on the top end.. I don't think I will in my heart of hearts, but I guess since this is the first car I am buying myself I have turned it into a life-choice lol

HELP lol
