Find a low mileage engine so when your engine goes, swap the other one in.

When my engine goes I'm going to visit tilley .

Well maybe. If I did swap in a 2k engine what would be involved? Is the only difference the VI which would already be solved or would there be more custom work?

I guess there would be a lil more custom work, Tilley just got done swapping a 2k engine into a 4th gen, PM/Call/Email him.

Yeah I just found that thread in general. The only custom work mentioned had to do with the VI, but it wasn't a very detailed thread. I PM'd him so we'll see. Hopefully Vsamylov will pop in too because he did this minus the VI back before the 3.5 swap.

custom work on the 2k enigine onto a 4th gen? as i recall there was none. mototr and tranny bolted in just like a regualr vq30. the only thing that was involved was all the hoses and the wiring. you can pm or email maxs because he just did this swap into his 4th gen with a vi. so its a complete swap.

Please no flaming, I've done plenty of reading, and am just a little un-clear about which would be the easiest setup.

Apparently people sell the adapter blocks for the 4th gen IACV and stuff, so I would useh te 5th gen TB w/ the 4th gen IACV.

adapters can be bought from maxs. he sells the iacv adapter, the 4th gen tb to vi adapter and the 5th gen tb adapter if you are going to use the 5th gen tb.

I'll be doing the VI first anyway and just hold onto the engine for a hundred thousand miles or so. Were the hoses and wiring any different than if you swapped in a regular 4th gen engine? Were you just able to plug in the 4th gen harness into the 5th gen sensors or at least able to use the 4th gen sensors?

Lets put it this way...if you'd already taken car of the VI (inluding IACV and egr) would it simply be plug and play?

I'll PM your brother too, but input from everyone possible is the way I like it.

The hoses are dependant on which emissions equipment you have in your model year.. The blocks and heads itself are identical. But for the most part the 4th gen harness plugs into the 5th gen 3.0. (minus injectors)

How about with partial emissions equipment like us '95s have? I would assume it would just be a matter of not plugging in certain ssensors and blocking off some hose outlets? So the injectors are the ONLY thing that doesn't plug in?

Injectors don;t plug in and I am pretty sure whatever else doesn;t plug in can be swapped.

Thanks Kevlo,

So just to clear things up, the only adapting I would have to do is an adaptor plate for the 4th GEN IACV, and the soldering for the injectors. Correct?

And you need the adapter plate for hte 5th gen TB to cover up where the 5th gen IACV was--maxS sells that one.

I believe that using a 4th gen IACV would be a better option especially given the availability of adapter plates for remote mounting (from both maxS/vysamolov and Stephen Max).
Better than using the 5th gen IACV that's already attached to the tb? How so? Using the stock 5th gen one eliminates the need for excess hardware like adapter plates doesn't it? Why go through the extra hassel when u don't have to? What am I missing?

I don't think anyone has yet used a full 5th gen EGR system. Everyone has either not used it (probably the way to go as--correct me if I'm wrong--FL does't have emmissions testing) or use the 4th gen EGR with the 5th gen EGR guide tube.
That's what I meant to say. I want to use the 4th gen EGR equip. that's already there w/ the 5th gen guide tube and upper manifold. My apologies for the vagueness.

We all used the 5th gen upper and lower also used the 00EGR guide tube.
So am I to assume that I won't run into any clearance issues w/ the coil pack mounts b/cuz I'm a 96, but if I were a 97-99 I would?

My sentiments EXACTLY!!! (Minus the having a whole 00 engine part. I'll only buy what I need.) Only I'm one step closer cuz I think I almost got it. How's this?

Parts list for my setup:

1) 00 upper manifold w/ tb & EGR guide tube - bigger tb than 4th gen? and to connect to my 4th gen EGR plumbing and for the VI of course).
Still unsure why I should use the 4th gen IACV + adapter plate(s) instead of stock 5th gen IACV. Something to do w/ 5th gen wiring harness not matching 4th gen IACV plunger solenoid? Discussed w/ another .org member in separate posts.
2) 00 lower manifold - to possibly avoid any coil pack post grinding work and definitely to avoid port matching 4th gen lower to 5th gen upper.
3) 00 fuel rail & injectors & connectors- bigger/flow more fuel, better design (top spraying vs. 4th gen side spraying). Along w/ 5th gen upper manifold runner redesign, prolly 1 of the reasons y DE-K torque curve is soooo much smoother than DE's. More homogeneous fuel/air mixture into combustion chamber.
4) 00 manifold mounting bolts - should come w/ manifolds but just in case.
5) Summit rpm switch.

See, I'm really tryina understand this here, so if some1 could jus chime in and edit this where needed I'd be ready to go!

About how much should I expect to pay at car-parts.com for all the parts listed in my previous post? Basically 5th gen everything from the heads up including the EGR guide tube?

Arrrggh...is there no way to get around using an adapter plate w/ this swap? Why do u need 1 if ur using the 5th gen tb?

Y is an adapter plate necessary? Because ur using the 4th gen IACV w/ the 5th gen tb? Wouldn't the 5th gen IACV work?

I would like this mod to be as close to stock functionality and as clean a retrofit as possible, no weird idle issues, no CELs, properly functioning EGR system, etc. Hence my reason for wanting to use all necessary DE-K parts. Thanx for your patience fellaz!

From my understanding, I don't think you could just straight bolt up a 5th GEN TB on a 4th GEN, you need an adaptor plate. And if you keep your 4th GEN TB, and try to bring over the 5th GEN IACV, there's fitment issues. Correct me if I'm wrong?

There's no way to fit the 5th gen IACV to the 4th gen TB.

There are also fitment issues with using a 4th gen TB. The 00VI positions the TB closer to the firewall, directly over the egr valve, and the egr interferes with the coolant pipe at the bottom of the 4th gen TB (as well as the IACV on the bottom of the 5th gen TB). I ended up cutting the coolant pipe off a 4th gen TB for one customer in order to make it fit. No big deal.

So what is the simplest setup to go with? 5th GEN TB with adaptor plate and a 4th GEN IACV with adaptor plate?

I think you are missing the answer.

The answer is 2 posts up. Read it carefully (especially the part in parentheses).

Are you saying that the 5th gen EGR interferes w/ the IACV on the bottom of the 5th gen tb? I'm trying but I keep losin ya.

Yep, I think you could use it if I eliminate the EGR completely... Not too sure on that, im just going to stick with the 5th gen TB/4th gen IACV

Got it. And the 5th gen EGR doesn't interfere w/ the 5th gen iacv cuz the 5th gen upper has the IACV in a different location, or it has a diff. EGR system altogether right?

FINALLY!!! It makes sense now. Thanx Stephen! So then the whole point of these adapter plates is to rotate or otherwise move the 5th gen iacv out of the way of the 4th gen EGR right?

Not exactly.

The A33 (5th gen) IACV interferes with the A32 (4th gen) egr. People that want to use the A33 throttle body have to remove the IACV from the bottom of the throttle body. A plate is needed to cover up the IACV ports in the A33 throttle body so that there are no air leaks. If you remove your A32 egr system, then you can retain the A33 IACV, but then you have to change the electrical connectors that plug into the IACV.

People who want to use an A32 or Pathfinder throttle body and want to use the A32 IACV need to mount the IACV on a plate and run an air supply hose from the back of the plate to the intake manifold, like what is shown here:

That's good to know.

And your ecu controls the IACV just fine?

ok the easiest thing to do is use a 5th gen tb and remote mount the 4th gen iacv becasue fitment is a problem with the 5th gen iacv. maxs sells adapter plates for the iacv so you can mount it seperatly and the adapter plate for the 5th gen tb that blocks off where the 5th gen iacv used to be at. maxs also sellts the adapter plate for the 4th gen tb if you want to use it still but the cheapest and easiest thign to do is use the 5th gen tb. if anybody needs adapter plates contact me.

I plan on using the lower & upper, 5th gen TB and IACV. I will remove the EGR & block off w/ plate on the upper and still use the 5th gen IACV on the 5th gen TB with no adapter plates or relocation. From what I understand the only problem is the 5th IACV will cause a low idle when cold. Is that correct?
Regardless, I will be doing the install this weekend w/o adapter plates so I'll let you know how this method works out. Dyno on Tuesday w/ VAFC.

I'm sure I'll be posting up as I go... gotta remember pictures.
