Toying with the idea - 3 way active setups step in
People with 3 way active setups, you are the ones that have mainly been doing this, so I'm assuming you will have the most expertise in the subject.
Currently I'm running:
Rainbow SLC 265.03...powered by an Arc Kar 400.4
2 DLS reference W710 subs...powered by an Arc Kar 900.1
I know that the common practice is to have low profile 8inch midbass drivers in your front doors.
My question is, how big can you go? Don I know you're upping it to 9's in your doors. Can the 5th gen take 10's? If it's possible, it would eliminate the need for my box in the trunk. Are my subs even door (free-air) capable? I know another big obstacle is mounting depth. Does anyone have any numbers? Manny..I'm looking at you
Here is the link to my subs...mounting depth and other information is included. http://www.dls.se/english/speakers/w710.htm
How possible is it to run my subs in my front doors? I'd probably move my midrange drivers into my kicks and continue to run the component set passively, unless my 400.4 is capable of running them actively.
I know my questions and information are very unorganized, and I hope I hit all the points. Worst case scenario this becomes an intelligent discussion that is proven to be unfeasible.
Thanks all for the info and help..

Nilesh, Like Don said anything is possible. 10's for subbass into lower midbass has been done before in doors, but would be quite a different project IMO than those of us putting 8's in our door for midbass duty. Keep in mind how hard it can be to control resonance of the door and door panel with strong midbass, nevertheless subbass. Sounds like a door panel rebuild (I don't think I've seen a 10" in a door pulling off subbass without it involving fiberglass door panels attached much more strongly to the door than "stock" door panels) . Doable, but very tough to pull off well.
Also if you are now running amono amp to your subs, thats going to further limit the frequency you'd wanna play the 10's at...which would really keep it as subbass...wouldn't want midbass to be coming from a mono channel. Thus you'd have to build your kicks to allow them to produce a bit of midbass.
What's your main purpose for considering this? Upfront bass? saving trunk space? getting your mids in kicks?
Not a project I'd be excited about taking up personally. Sub-bass in doors is quite a project. Doable, but a lotof work. Keep that in mind before you plunge into it.

Your particualr subs? No sir.
I wasnt even considering putting the panels back on, but fabricating something, at least in the near vicinity of the sub, thus eliminating resonance..

Interesting points to consider.
Basically, my subs would not do well in doors, due to the design of them, and subbass drivers would not do well in doors, due to the resonation. Maybe I jumped the gun when I purchased these.
Luckily they're literally new. They're mounted and hooked up but aren't being used cause they don't sound right upon installation. I haven't found the few extra mins to see where I went wrong.
Steve, my particular reasons for doing this: trunk space, definitely. Upfront "full package" sound up front was one of the main reasons. I'm actually currently very happy with the bass response from the midrange drivers in the doors right now. Getting them into kicks, well I like projects, and this is just something to do It would probably be very easy to just run a 3way active setup with what I've got and just pick up some deep sounding midbasses and call it a day.

It sounds like the subs could be out of phase. Obviously with those subs you should be getting a good amount of bass, somethings wrong.
As far as saving some trunk space I like Steve's idea, how about running the IB in the rear deck, or even creating a box that is built from the rear deck down. Its doable and would eliminate alot of the trunk space use. Alot of work though
You could always try something super custom with the subs mounted under the dash or something different.... underseats? They are probably too deep for that. Just throwing some suggestions out there.

Nilesh...I wouldnt even bother with rear door subs, unless you are doing a fiberglass job- not to mention you'd have to angle them to avoid cancellation and like Steve mentioned severe door resonance.
IMO if you want subbass IB, you need alot more air to work with to get those lower freq's...why not fabricate a new rear deck out of a sheet of mdf and drop them in there?
I take it those Arc Kars subs were alot better than you thought

Thanks manny for the input.
Not too keen on the idea of IB, fglass, or playing with my rear deck.
I'm going to work on getting my subs to sound right then work on if I still feel I need some midbass drivers.

you simply store your OEM rear deck cover and start cutting
