..but i have one right now in a ported box and the bass is serious, just not precise. if i throw it in a sealed box, will it clean it up much?

it should clean it up a decent amount, depending on box specs. what does kicker recommend for box volume?
large sealed box will give deep bass, but can get a little muddy. a smaller sealed box will give better response in the upper bass frequencies, but low bass extension will suffer a bit.

kicker recommends between 0.88 to 2.0
isn't the L7 notorious for being very good in the low frequencies anyway?

huh...i never thought about that. about how much space would the magnet take up?

My cousin had an L7 in a generic box-hit like a mf'er but was way off acoustically. He put it in a Kicker brand box designed for the sub and it still hit like a mf'er but was much more accurate.
I personally don't care for the way they sound. Loud yes, but really wears on you. It's funny cause he got in my old car that had a Diamond D3 in it. Way less power and way less bass, but the first thing he said was, "wow, that's really clean".

bigger box = more efficient, lower bass...but it may get boomy
small box = can run more power, can get tighter.....but will sacrifice a bit of the low end.

the low end will suck terribly in a sealed box... sure you'll get greater LFE, but in general, the drop off is very sudden and too soon. yes, it will sound cleaner, but low end will go out the window. solos should only be in ported boxes imo...

the drop off in a sealed box should be much smoother. once you play anything below tuning in a ported box, the sub is unloaded and basically playing free air.
i gained a lot of low end back when going back to a sealed box setup. bigger the box, low end reproduction increases. small boxes will cause the low end to suffer a bit.
