R12 is the OLD stuff, however they already stopped production on virgin R134a. The cost on a 30 pound cylinder of R134a went from $75 last summer to $300 this summer. So if you take it somewhere to get it converted, which you really should, it's going to get a little expensive.
The only thing to convert really is the fittings. The new fittings are simply retrofitted onto the old fittings. And the system needs to be vacuumed out completely before the R134a is put back in.
But honestly if you can get a good deal on a R12 refill you should stay with it. R12 is more effective than R134a and especially so in your old system which was designed for R12. R12 is perhaps less valuable than R134a now.

Is it illegal to sell R-12 to other people? My dad bought cases of the stuff before it was taken off the market and I have no idea what to do with it. All my current cars use R-134, so its of no use to me...
i called mechanic, he said he can fill it with R 12 for 60, but i thought R 12 wasent areound anywhere, so i should get him to fill it with r 12
and i thought it was iilegal ( to sell r 12) and to put it in a car, i thought i "HAD" to convert to r 134

It was never made illegal to resale R12, it's just illegal to produce. Many shops still have plenty of it left but it just isn't "virgin". Meaning most of what they have has been recycled from junked or converted cars.
