Another question of my own... I have a 1998 I30 150k miles....today I pulled the cap off my coolant expansion tank and discovered a horrible smelling brown sludge instead of coolant. I will be flushing the system saturday, and Ill see what happens, but just wondering if any of you have run into the same situation. Im worried headgaskets are leaking oil into the coolant (the car does loose a LOT of oil, it seems to all be accounted for on the ground though) and the car is done for. However its never overheated, and the oil shows no signs of coolant, and there is no white smoke. Thoughts?

Remove two 10mm bolt on top, then remove one push tab, 10mm bolt, one Philips screws from beneath the front bumper directly under the fog lights. Pull back undertray, remove 10mm bolt holding fog light housing, remove fog light housing, then you'll see the last and hidden 10mm bolt holding the headlight from bottom.

The bulb you need is D2R, I personally recommend sticking to OEM bulbs for maximum brightness. You'll need to remove the igniter cap, held in by 3 screws, then will have access to the bulb.
Hey man thanks for the reply. My Mom got scared when I started talking about bolts and decided to go to Infinti!

But hold your laughter... they wanted $1000 to replace the headlight!!
They said the ballast was broken... yeah, bull****. So I'm going to end up doing it for her. But I can't find the "D2R" bulb your are talking about on an Nissan genuine parts websites. Can you point me to a link?

brown sludge in coolant

Not 100%, but this was indicative of blown headgaskets when it occurred in my Supra, twice. Another indication - typically when you turn the car off it should draw coolant from the overflow bottle as it cools, with a blown gasket it will push coolant out of the bottle and onto the ground.
Napa used to sell a kit that went onto the top of the radiator and tested for hyrocarbons in the coolant.

If you want more sound, than any intake will work. If you want the best overall power, stick with the stock intake. For aftermarket, the PR CAI is your best bet.

As for an exhaust, you can get them anywhere. Which one to get, that's personal preference. If you've got the money, Cattman is the 'premier' exhaust system out there, really.

Best overall power, yes. The stock intake is pretty well designed.

Now if you want to talk about intake manifolds, the 00VI is king.

I have a 2000 Infiniti I30. And I want to change out the muffler. Not the entire exhaust. And I have no clue as to where to start. For while under I saw the clamps but it also looked like it is welded. Will I have to hacksaw the entire muffler off to change it?

There are two bolts holding the axle back muffler, the bolts are welded but nuts are removable. Any exhaust which fit the Maxima 00-03 will fit, however you will need to extend the exhaust tips to clear our bumpers. Or you can go custom and have a muffler shop chop off your current one and weld on a new one.

TCM for '00 I30t affecting Automatic Transmission

The 1st to 2nd shift and the 2nd to 3rd shift are the wrong on my '00 I30t. The shift is non-existence most times. The RPMs go to 4k to 5k and you can tell power output goes at about 3k. I have to force the shift, by letting off on the gas pedal. There's a TSB from NHTSA that refers to a Nissan order to replace the TCM. I bought my '00, 2 years old. I would have thought that Infiniti would have preformed their own TSB's, but I guess not. I am a handy dandy auto-mechanic who will searches the junk yards so as not to pay the dealer prices for parts. However, there are few '00 I30t's in the yards (none so far).
What is the rev. code/part # for the revised TCM? Is it a firmware update?
I also bought the eService Manual from Nissan, which has no procedure for firmware updates to either ECU or TCM. Does anybody got those instructions?
Where can we find the latest rev. codes for the firmware for both the ECU and TCM?
Will a solenoid cause this time of shifting probem?
I want to fix the problem and don't like going down bunny trails

Tonight I was driving home from work, I was on an off/on ramp doing about sixty, when my car just suddenly shut off. No power, no lights, nothing. I brought her to a stop, as I was standing on the side of the rode calling for help, the flashers suddenly came back on. Then I got back in the car and she started up fine. I turned the heat off. When I was safely home, i turned the heat on, the heated seats, and there wasn't an issue. Any thought of what it could be? I intend to have the battery and the alternator checked tomorrow morning. THANKS

Quick spark plug replacement question:

I managed to replace the 3 spark plugs on the left bank. But on the right bank I can't seem to get the connectors off without feeling like I am going to break something. Any hints tips or tricks on changing the right bank spark plugs?

I am not sure of the specific name of the dash part but there are some on ebay once in a while, although I have never seen one with the opening lid for sale. My understanding is your part was only available on the 00 and therefore are pretty rare. There are a couple of sellers on ebay with the complete car for parts, maybe you can email them and ask if they have the dash part and th ****. For the latter you may have to buy the entire switch.

Hey guys im kinda new here cause ive had the account for awhile but never used it. Anyways, i gotta problem for you guys to figure out. I have a 96 Infiniti I30 and this is the first time I am having trouble with the tranny. I live up in MD and yeah we just got hit by the blizzard in all so as a result my car was stuck, thus I was constantly changing from drive to reverse and drive etc. (automatic :/) for like half an hour. Later that day I noticed I was getting much pick up. So I punched it and realized that it was not downshifting and basically concluded that the car was stuck in fourth. So I decided to give it a break and left the car off. When i turned it back on the O/D off, Overdrive, icon was flashing at me like nuts, but the tranny was working its regular ways -weird- downshifting and all, well KINDA. Ive realized that it does downshift when I punch it but it doesnt do so when you give like 75 or 80% gas like automatic tranny cars should, you know what im sayin. SO, Im hopin someone here will give me a diagnosis. I will get it checked. But im also wondering if me taking it to 118 a couple times had to do with it (limiter), car smells like barbeque after i go that fast. doubt it though hehe. Reply ASAP please, it needs help...

Well if you need to diagnose your tranny go to the 4th gen section cuz it has way more traffic and any mechanical issue that we may have with our cars they definitely will have with theirs. The link below is to the tranny diagnosis

your next best bet is to find a member named pmohr... if he has free time (and your lucky) and you can get your car to him he could definitley help u figure things out.

Hello,
I'm new to the i30/Maxima thing. I just purchased a '96 i30t black on tan w/ 5-speed and I'm liking it a lot.

My newbie question: Can anyone with access to production data on these cars tell me what percentage of i30ts were built with the 5-speed? I've read some articles which state that Infiniti expected only 3-5% of buyers to choose the 5-speed, but I thought someone might know some more specific information.

thanks,
James

They were rather common in the 4th gen I30s. Any reason why you wanna know or just curious?

A couple more questions:

1) Has anyone purchased an aftermarket grille from rockauto or from this Ebay seller:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33564

These are OE replacements and not genuine parts so I was wondering about the fit/finish.

2) My car has the (lame, in my opinion) gold package. The gold on my front grille seems to be wearing off, and it looks like maybe there is chrome finish underneath. Has anyone successfully removed the gold finish from a gold-package grille to reveal the chrome?

3) Does anyone know if the front seat upholstery pieces for the seat bottoms are symmetrical between the driver and passenger side? I realize the tops would not be because of the lumbar support lever but I thought the bottoms might be the same. This would make it easier for me to find a replacement bottom; my driver's side is ripped and is really bothersome to me because the rest of my interior is mint.

4) Is depoautolights the best place to get the Cefiro one piece headlamps?

Thanks,
James

Hello all, I'm the soon-to-be owner of a 2001 Infiniti i30, possibly as soon as this weekend.

After doing a little research about the car, I learned that there is a design flaw that results in failure of the ECM. Apparently when the IACV, Coil packs, motor mounts, and some other things fail, a short will cause the ECM to fail. (It was noted that the IACV was the most common.)

Is this still a problem in the 2001's, or was this limited to the earlier models? Has anyone taken precautions such as installing an inline fuse to protect the ECM?

You should be able to but I'm not sure about the aux port for ur 04 I35, your best bet is to ask the same question in the maxima forum of the same year (fifth or sixth gen) or the electronics section

Also Murph for the ECM failure, you should check the 5th gen section. You'll get responses much quicker

If a g35 sedan spoiler can fit a 2000-2005 Maxima, does that mean it will fit our I35??

Hi guys, long time peruser, first time posting. Anyway, ive had a heck of a time getting a driver side rear abs sensor. I keep getting parts from online and junkyards that just do not fit. My 2002 I35 is the base model, and the connector is smaller than ones I have ordered fit. The last one I bought (and returned) were this one. I know that it says sport series, but I was just praying that it would work... well it didnt, the connector is not the same. This all stemmed from buying the car from a local used dealer and I just did not do a thorough enough job at inspecting it. The SES, ABS, Slip, and TCS OFF lights never came on when turning the key. I just never noticed. So when my MAF blew up a week later, my SES never lit up. Luckily, my iphone and this forum got me out of the middle of the street (thanks) after pulling the wire from the MAF to limp-home. So come to find out... someone got mischievous and cut the LEDs off the board in the dash. I radioshack replaced them and now I have a Christmas tree effect, all those pretty missing lights are lit up. Now to the TCS/ABS issue, I did not even have a freaking Left Rear ABS sensor. none, nada, nothing. So I need a new one. I have increased the money i have spent on this to over $110 and am about to just go to the official infiniti parts dealer and buy one of theirs. Has anyone else had such an issue getting this part? Can anyone point me to one cheaper than this?

GReddy, Catmann, Apexi, Megan basically any that fit on the Maxima of your year. Do a google search and a search on the forum and you'll find some.
