2017 Maxima Whining Noise and Tapping Sound

i have a 2017 Maxima SR that has been the 120 mile round trip daily driver for 4 years. No major issues or fixes. Currently sitting at 165k miles. CVT has been drain and filled 4 times so far with the last one being at 144k miles. Only oil I have ever used is AMSOIL 0W-20 in the engine and 93 gas. Oil change is ususlly every 10k miles since I am out of warranty.

Yesterday I developed a whine and tapping noise which is louder in the video in the driver side floor board. It'a definitely coming from the engine area or lower engine/transmission area.

Ive replaced all 4 wheel bearing hub assemblys and CV axles and brakes but nothing else. I'm assuming its the CVT but its not overheating, slipping, or having any shifting issues so I wasnt sure along with no jumping RPMs. Hopefully you can hear the noises I am speaking of in the video. That was taken from driver floorboard from 30 mph to 79 mph. It's not super loud and cannot be heard over radio or even rain. It does not do it in park while reving the engine so i don't think its engine related. Considered alternator or torque converter but wasnt sure.

No transmission codes or check engine light. Nissan dealership has no clue as well.

Video below.

Was the filter changed when you did your CVT service? I ask because my Dealership never heard of the filter until I ordered one from them.

My CVT had a a whine ( metal on metal) as well even after replacing the fluid. That whine appears to have been caused by a restriction due to the CVT filter never being changed when the CVT was serviced. I changed that filter out and the whine is now gone.

This video (@ 5:44) will give you a good view of the CVT's filter. (

Does the 7th Gen Max have this CVT filter?

Hiya TDGrant! I am about to do this on my 2010 Maxima I have the filter that goes behind the drivers side wheel but does the 7th gen Max have this other filter also?

It probably does, though I suspect it is a "screen" rather than a filter like the one besides the driver's front wheel. I have never opened up my CVT, so I am not sure, but I imagine they are quite similar. Opening up the CVT adds some risk with regard to contamination, so I did not want to risk that. You'll be way ahead of the game if you just get the filter done with a drain and fill of new fuild.

sorry if I sound dumb but this is a transmission drain and refill, which is different from doing a full CVT flush correct? I just bought a 16 SV, with 68k miles and no CVT flush has been done yet. Which would you recommend?

They, they are different. Just do a drain and fill, Enzo.

Previous models of the CVT have a external filter. Replace that also if your model has one.

Drain and fill Over a flush? Heck that would be cheaper for me. What is the reason behind that, or what would warrant doing a flush? I’ve read that a flush should be done every 30k. Tbh my car hasn’t even arrived yet, it’s be imo shipped here to Hawaii. I’ve had a friend drive it, he said it was fine except one of the front tires were missing chunks . Which tells me the previous owner didn’t take the best care of it

Flushing would involve forcing fluid through the system, which most do not think is a great idea.

However, if the radiator failed, then I would do a flush because pieces of the radiator and coolant would probably end up in your CVT, and both would wreck your CVT, so doing a flush would be a last ditch effort to save the CVT.

Yeah, 30k-50k is a decent range to do a service. If where you live in Hawaii is hot most of the year, then I would drop the number between 30k-40k.

Ok sounds good, I’ve read the same thing on the flush being dangerous. Luckily I live in the mountains, our weather is 50’s- 70’s for most of the year. I will get a drain and fill and look Into the filter, thanks a lot.

I would just re-use the seal for the cartridge filter if you do not have one. They are easy to replace, since it is an external filter, so I would just re-use it for now. Order a new one and replace it when it arrives. No big thing.
