My Cutout idea

Hey, I have an idea to make an electronic cutout from the 3.5 TB.

It's drive by wire, so all the hard work is done. It's made out of aluminum, but so are QTP cutouts, and the 3.5 TB has a steel plate. Also, I can open and close it much faster

here's a vid of me opening and closing it at a slow speed (5v)

It opens much faster and harder at full battery power.

It's OEM, so I don't think the motor will burn out while I have it open....only on track runs anyway, so no more than 20 seconds at a time.

I also have a TB from a mercedes E-class that's a bit thinner that I can use. Works the same way.

Let me know what you think.

It opens quickly because it doesn't have very low gearing. The exhaust gas pressure will probably force it open pretty easily. My electric cutout will not push open by hand, that TB will.
Also, that thing will get extremely hot. Anything plastic on it will probably melt. The motor might even have plastic gears in it, not sure if anyone has ever opened one up.

But, you could give it a chance. The worst thing that could happen is that it won't work. Just don't put so much time and money in making it work and fabbing up the mount that you could have just bought one.

That idea has crossed my mind several times as well but I've never persued it because '96sleeper is on to something, I think the valve will hold though, and the gears are metal, but there is several plastic parts in that motor assembly

I'm going to be coating the inside and outside with high temp paint, for added heat protection. The flap won't open with exhaust gases, otherwise the flap would open on a boosted car when the throttle suddenly closes. It's pretty tough to push it open by hand.

If anything, the motor works in 2 directions. I could just as easily close it.

It's worth a shot, because the TB was free.

I think it's a good idea, I don't know about the drive by wire part,(the components being plastic if that is the case) I think it would definitely work on a manual tb. But the concept would definitely work. In for results.

i think anything thats made of plastic would have to be removed due to the heat in an exhaust... it might not melt the plastic out right but it would weaken it down to a point where it couldnt be used anymore.

seems like a good idea, but it might not work as well as you hoped.

I also have a spare mercedes E-class TB, the same size, with a metal casing for the parts. If it breaks, whatever, I can just rig something else up.

Excellent point..there has to be some air going into the engine, and if i remember there's no openings between the TB and intake ( but not sure). Should be easy to adapt it to seal completely though.

Tavarish I believe i actually have a 3.5 TB hanging around if you want a second to play with.

Yes, there is a small amount open, but it is remedied by adjusting the stopper screw, or removing it completely. Even with the stopper screw removed, the TB is still open a VERY minute amount, nothing to worry about, I don't think it'll be an issue, since lots of others use a tb as their cutouts without sealing woes.

I have another TB as well to play around with. I'll see how this turns out, and post pics of my progress.

If I recall when I had my encounter with the Drive by wire and my hammer. Plastic outter casing but internals are metal, not sure if it would warp over a period of time due to heat but I think this is a solid idea and worth a shot!

keep us posted tavarish, glad your still around... thought the SC would steal all your attention
