hook the jump box directly to the starter lug, and a clean spot on the engine. see if she spins right, then.

Ok that's another good test ill try.. thanks! The starter that came today was also not correct... the solenoid was mounted too low and the cable would not reach the connection on the solenoid ... I have lost all faith in these reman starters... not that there was that much faith to begin with :-/

One thing to check while the starter is out is to look at the teeth on the drive plate and make sure there is no damage that would keep the starter from engaging onto it. What you can try to do is get a large enough screwdriver and rotate the drive plate and then re-install the starter and see if it will engage.

cover the end of the illumination wire with electrical tape, don't use it.
It was actually both, fuse and control unit, was fried, but fuse kept blowing, until illumination was capped off by itself. Thanks alot. Now I just need to figure out if speedometer or sensor is bad.

nine times out of ten, it's the speed sensor. Per fsm, you can pull the speed sensor, put a multimeter on the pins, spin the gear quickly (fsm shows clockwise), you should get voltage (0.5v AC).

Update on my starter problem.... IT'S ALIVEEEE!!!! Thanks for helping me troubleshoot this problem... I still cant be sure whether the problem was in the battery, or the starter... because I put the new starter in and a brand new battery all in the same shot this afternoon. Figured the battery would be a good thing to do either way because winter is approaching....

Anyway, it fired up first try about 10 minutes ago and I couldn't be more relieved! I'm closing on my first house tomorrow and my fiancee' need's her corolla back, we have been sharing her car for the past 3 months since I sold my Wrx.

I suspect the switch is bad. try flicking the brights a few times, see if they will at least momentarily turn off.
It may also help to see if pulling the switch out, and unplugging it allows the lights to turn off. If it's not the switch, it's stuck relays or burned wiring :/

Hey guys just bought a 91 maxima not sure of the engine type. I only have had it for a month and since its getting cold i noticed that when i turn on the heat after the car has been warmed up that its temp gauge shows that the car is getting cold. I have no idea what it can be. I also have a very high idle on this car. It idles between 1,200 & 1,500 rpm's in park & 800 - 900 rpm's in drive. It has dropped to regular idle about 3 times since i had it around 900 in park & 400 in drive but rarely. I think it has something to do with the throttle body or tps but again not sure. Some help diagnosing it would be great. I don't want to go thru replacing a bunch of stuff if i don't have to. I would like to thank any & everyone for any help in advance. I have had a lot of help with my g35x on the infiniti forums & feel really confident that u guys will do the same.

91 no matter if its a GXE or SE you have a VG30E

your temperature gauge could be bad, mine went as well as the tach and both would work for about half of the time and thats it. could be a bad wire behind the cluster or the cluster itself. how far does it dip down?

high idle could be a bad vacuum line

hello i just got a 1991 se 5spd and it has a misfire, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and fuel filter .

i pulled the plug wires one at a time and i found one that doesn't change the idle,(front middle cyl i think its number 4?)i also pulled the injector connector on that one and that doesn't change it ether .

i changed the plug on that cyl and no change so im guessing the only thing left is the injector? that plug was coal black but the other plugs are perfect tan.

o and would a misfire make the knock sensor pull timing?

thanks.

theres 2 different kinds, would have to look at the injector threads (should be many) for the color codes, i never had to do an injector on mine so i dont know the color codes

as in cat-back? it's always beneficial.
another point to look for is the warpspeed y-pipe. nothing but raves from the people using them.

yeah if you want a upgrade get the MES mandrel exhaust system and WarpSpeed Ypipe, i did the full mandrel exhaust and Ypipe at the same time and it was a HUGE difference

best bet is the full mandrel exhaust from MES, WarpSpeed Ypipe, and a K&N air filter

if youre good with engines, you can take the turbo parts from a Z31 turbo with VG30ET and turbo a 3rd gen, but you would need to beef up the tranny or use a VE 5spd because a GXE tranny wont last long

Many thanks for this forum. My 1990 maxima has rough idle when you start it cold..it goes up to 1500rpm...it seems it doesnt have right air-fuel combination...i can smell unburned gas from the exhaust...after some time like 5-10min, when it gets warm the idle goes down to 700-900. i can tell something is not right.. and my gas mileage is heavy as compared before.. Just wanna solicit your expertise with this before i mess up the sensors and all..Thanks again

this is the mandrel exhaust, you just need a muffler and a resonator. cant remember what length of resonator though

there's a design flaw in those headers; no flex section before the cat. not too difficult to remedy, but a warpspeed y-pipe would offer better gains for the price.
and Chrome posted the link for the exhaust.

i found old pics of mine, im pretty sure it was a 20" OBX resonator i used and i had a GSX-71 fart can. i ditched the cat converter too, i dont know if they worked out the kinks with the exhaust though because some minor changes had to be made

ive got a vid of how it sounded if you care, crappy camera though so you cant hear it well

you want the 5th gen section but you probably have a busted ABS sensor

Thanks for the vid now I know there isn't too many videos of the 3rd gen max on YouTube but I found one on a 4th gen max that I really like sound of let me know what you think.. So what I've come to with all this is the mandrel piping with a muffler and a 20" resonator now would it be better to keep the cat or just go with a test pipe instead??

personally i would ditch the cat converter, to me theyre a pain. i took it off the 3rd gen, and when the truck goes for a new exhaust right away and the Supra goes for a new exhaust in the spring both are getting the cats removed. depends where you are though, in the states i know it can be illegal. in Alberta its not illegal

OBD1 questions

I'm working on a 94 Maxima, and I got trouble codes 47 and 82, and from one list that I found online, they both refer to crankshaft position sensor. Why is there more than one code for the same part? Also, I got code 44, and I can't find this one anywhere, could anyone tell me what this code is for?

Thanks for the help in advance.
