i belive that the vg motor is more than capable of making 14's im hoping for mid 13s with my vgt in this coming summer.

seems to me that a factory vg, with a lot of mods and tuning could break 14s just as bryan said earlier.

Definately, especially if you spend the money where it counts.. the heads. SOHC heads are much cheaper to port and cut multiangle valves into than DOHC. I was quoted a price of 750 for both all done. Forget the name, it was out of the back of Grassroots. Get the intake plenum extrudehoned($$$$) or at least port matched. Then any mods already there or to be made in the future will have a much higher benefit.

jesus 750 to get the head dones? i could be rich if i had the time to port every one's heads and if i charged that kinda price..

tools:
die grinder = 10 dollars
standard abrasives = 30 dollars
time = weekend
new gasgkets = 70 dollars (all of them)

a lot better than paying 700 dollars

Note: the VE's 4-valve heads have much more valve area than 2-valve(sohc) heads.

True, but knowlege is priceless. The question is, CAN you port heads. Do it wrong and the hp and torque curve will be wierd. cut to deep...oops that's the water jacket or the valve guide. Now the head is junk. Figure this. You charge 15-20 bucks an hour for skilled labor. How long could it take an experienced individual to do a set of heads(disassemble, clean, plane, port/ppolish, cut seats and valves, clean again, reasseble, then check play and tolerances)? That's 12 ports on each head remember. 48 hours seems even a convervative time. 48 times 15 =720... I don't know man, that seems fair to me. Ruin a head and it will cost you a lot of money to no get ahead at all.. Plus, I've seen prices a lot higher than this.

True though, the 4-valve heads do have more area..Price a port polish valve job on those puppies! I am almost certain it will be more than 750

Yup! Anyone reading this? Learn something! And to add, you have to be able to port THE EXACT SAME WAY ON EVERY PORT! Or else each one will flow different. About the only thing a DIYer can do is just some simple gasket port matching and maybe some casting flash removal(but Japanese heads are one of the best cast heads avail).

Yeah headwork on 4 valve heads are high, good thing the VE ones are decent outa the box.

porting is NOT for bone heads.
takes a lot of time and exact measurements before, during and after. paper work, math. and a brain.

don't think it can be done in a couple hours. a throtle body takes that, and thats just one port job.

i posted my mods for a reason. to help others to see it doesn't take much to make these things run

just think the VG has support in aftermarket cams, turbo's, ecu's and a host of other things. im suprised a vg max hasn't broke into the 12's

He is absolutly correct

It took me a couple hours to port match my 60mm TB to the intake collector. When I did my exhaust studs I did some very mild porting on the intake chambers. Even then it took about 7 hours, not only do you have to remove some material but it has to be smoothened out to. The only bad thing is I monkeyed the #5 intake valve seat so I didn't get full compression in that cylinder. I'm sure there is a 12 sec VG max somewhere.

I just scored a source for 60K mile custom turbo motor out of an 84-86 Z car for an excellent price. You know what this means? I will pursue 12's in the quarter full steam ahead! I'll keep you all posted as I progress through the upgrades.

It is a private sale...cannot reveal my sources! 500 for complete engine( intercooler, turbo, ECU) and 300z tranny. I don't want the tranny though. He has the car complete, so I can snag the fuel pump too.
