What makes you say displacement plays a big difference on speed? Yes it affects if a little, but not a whole lot. I had a 2.0 Jetta, and a friend had a 1992 1.8 golf and his car was about twice as fast.

Also, would you rather perfer a 2.0 4cyl or a 2.0 6 cyl?

I have driven a few of those in Korea with a 4-speed auto (identical to the U.S. spec transmission aside from the final drive ratio)

Actually, they are not that bad for driving around in the city.
The transmission helps it along quite well since the 2.0L engines get hooked up with a 4.40 final drive as compared to the 3.60 final drive for the 3.0L engines.

Also, all the Asia market VQ engines (2.0L, 2.5L, 3.0L) have the variable intake components.

A lot of times, the foreign mentality is better than the U.S. They tend to consider the whole powertrain system -- including the transmission -- to get the most performance possible. In the U.S., the buyers and manufactuers alike tend to focus only on the engine power without considering that the transmission can really sandbag an engine if it is not set up right.

The transmission setup is just as important as the engine setup.

well actually, it affects it ALOT...

Torque

and about the VW thing...
the 1.8 is a TOTALLY different motor than the 2.0
the 1.8 is a 20 valve dohc motor(5valves/cylinder) and the 2.0 sohc 8vis a very outdated motor unless you are talking about the older 1.8 which is still a better motor
i'm not saying that the 8v 2.0 is a bad motor because i have experience with all three
