Installed a new starter now weird burning smell, help please!

Whats up guys,

Well I replaced the starter on my 96 for the second time. Only thing is this time there is an odd burning smell almost like an electrical fire...pretty scary actually. After I installed the starter the car started fine. Today I went to go get some gas and low and behold the car would not crank (everything else works fine). Has anyone experienced anything like this? Please help if you can, thanks.

I hate to say this, but burning smell + electrical item = dead item.
More info? What did it smell like. Burning varnish, or burning electrical cable?
Check the cables to the starter, any sign of melted plastic?

08 Dodge Avenger 2.46

I replace my starter in my 08 Dodge Avenger 2.4 yesterday and started it back up cranked fine. Turn the car off went back and tried to turn it on next morning wouldn't crank so I got to jump and it finally started but I'm smelling a burning smell and I was wondering if maybe I got the wires connected to the starter wrong?

My advice would be to start from the beginning and it all over again.

Meaning, pull your new new starter, check it over and go through the install process over again.

While you’re doing that work, pay close attention to this ... see post #3 ...

You know this is a forum for Nissan Maximas and not Chrysler products, don't you?

But the answer is that you got a bad starter. Take it back and get another one.

Remove it and Spin test it and see if when power is applied to the starter, if it starts smoking or perhaps you have some frayed positive starter wires that are pulling so much current through them they're lighting up light light bulb filaments!
