To me it would mean a charging system problem, from corrosion at the battery terminals to a bad voltage regulator or alternator. If the car starts it means it is running off the battery and the altenator is not charging.

Waste of money, takes 10 seconds (literally) to check battery and alt.

1. Open Hood
2. put volt/multimeter on battery terminals, read (should be 12V)
3. start car and repeat #2 while car is running (should be about 14V)

Done

If you don't get the right Voltage either your battery or alt died or your tension pulley is frozen. Really simple. Multimeters are about 15 bucks at radioshack and well worth it

EDIT: any like The Wizard said Autozone, Advance Auto and others will check for free

Purchased a Y pipe off forum a while ago and am having trouble attaching it to the cat. It seems that the bolts on the cat are slightly closer together than the wholes on the Y. Any suggestions?

About all you can do is make the holes slightly bigger on the Ypipe. As long as you have a good gasket there, you'll have nothing to worry about in the end.

I've never had this problem (nor do I have my Haynes handy) but you can download FSM courtesy of pmohrs thread, should find more insight there

Sure, if you somehow have the ability to remove color from plastic.

Magic. Beyond that,

You expect to be able to remove the coloring from a molded piece of colored plastic?

Why not just spend the $20 and get a set of clears?

they are easy to pop out if someone wanted to take them
then i would have to spend more on the tail lights$ 100+

And your stock corners are not as easy to pop out?

You'd lose out more if you spent hours modifying the stock signals than spending $20 on a whole set, if someone were to take them. And the chances of someone stealing turn signals and clearance lights?

You could always lock them in from teh back.

Well if you want to modify your car cosmetically, you'll have to spend money.

It's not extremely 'serious', if you don't care about your emissions system.

Not a single 'remedy' requires you to take it to a mechanic, but since we don't know anything about your mechanical aptitude...

Cost? For what? As shown above, there are multiple possible issues, only a proper diagnosis can lead you to the solution. Even then, it depends on where you live, what shop you have it done at, how many hours they charge to fix, what they charge per hour, for shop supplies, fees and taxes, parts cost and markup, etc.

If you don't fix it, you'll have a CEL on and you'll fail any sort of OBD-II emissions test you take.

Would anyone happen to know the inner diameter of the intake hoses? Should I get them at Home Depot or AutoZone?

Mine look a little awkward after my intake install and I want to purchase new ones.

Thanks in advance.

Which? There are many different 'hoses' involved with the intake.

thanks for the reply pmohr,

From your reply I got that it isnt a big issue unless I am an environmentalist type dude.

I just recently bought a 99 maxi with 151k. just recently changed the starter, alternator, battery etc... now it is giving me issues with starting. it tries to turn over and isn't successful bc it starts making a crackling sound like something is grinding... does anyone know what this could be??? the only way i can start the car is by turning the key all the way putting it in Neutral and then park holding it up and turning the ignition all the way again.... HELP !!!!

Have you searched? There is a video tutorial on replacing the starter.

CEL - Please Help!!!

Check Engine Light is on and I need to pass emissions soon! Got the P1447 code, so I replaced gas cap, vent control valve, and vapor cannister. No help.

Now it's the P0446 code, so I checked the voltage at the vent valve connector and there is 11V to ground, but only 9V across the connector. 11V will actuate the valve, but 9V does not. I then ohmed the orange wire with blue stripe from the vent valve connector to the ECM and the wire is good.

I hope the ECM isn't bad, but I'm not sure what else it could be. I used shop air and blew out the evap line from underhood to the vent valve, but no debris was found. All of the vacuum lines in the evap system have been checked and are good.

What else could it be??? I'm frustrated and am running out of time.

The ones that go to the Front Valve Cover and IACV. I believe they are two different sizes.

I have searched but have come back with mixed results.

Thanks, again.

wassup guys!!! i just bought a 95 5spd max with 271k miles on it. I am sooooo excited about the car but it has a few minor issues.

1. The starter needs to be changed, is there a guide to doing this?
2. The A/C needs to be recharged. Can I do this myself or should I go to a shop?
3. The radio does not turn on at all. What could be the problem with this?

and lastly

4. The window in the back passenger side came off track. Can I fix this myself or should I go to a shop.

Thanks a lot and I can't wait to start driving this beast!!!!

Have you searched at all?
  1. If you just look up a few posts, I already told someone else that there is a video tutorial on replacing the starter.
  2. If you've got an AC machine then yes, you could do it yourself. Otherwise, you don't have the proper equipment to completely evac the system.
  3. Are we to assume that you've checked fuses, checked for power/ground, checked with a different radio? That's what you should do.
  4. Depends on your mechanical aptitude and your comfort level in ripping apart that door. Nothing has to be taken to a shop, assuming you've got the right equipment, tools, and knowledge.

I appreciate the quick response. I just saw the starter post so thanks for that. As far as the A/C there is NO cold air coming out, so would I need to flush it out? Doesn't seem like there is anything there. As for the radio I will be checking all of that today thanks for the tips. And as far as the last one, I guess my question is, is there a guide to putting the window back on track?

The CEL was reset and now it displays an 0111 (P1447) code.

Has anyone here resolved the P1447 code and how did you do it, aside from replacing the gas cap, vent valve, or vapor cannister? I know that it can be several different causes, but I'm looking for examples of common reasons for the code, in real life.

Ok so I got my starter and A/C working, now i'm onto the radio. Now it doesnt turn on at all. Nor does the clock. The antenna on the car is always extended. When I press the power button I hear the motor for the antenna working but nothing is actually happening. It sounds like its grinding. The display does not work at all. I get no sound from the radio.

Any ideas on what the problem could be? How to fix it? Any help is much appreciated.

ok so I think there is a problem with my power steering...when driving the car the steering wheel becomes VERY stiff. It takes an incredible amount of force to turn the wheel. But this isn't always the case. P/S fluid is full but I'm thinking the belt needs to be replaced. Is there anyway to be sure that its the belt? Another symptom that may help is that when the car is idle and you try to turn the wheel, it revs a bit higher and isn't smooth, it jerks a lot and is a pain to turn. I want to take it to a dealer tomorrow but before I pay any type of money I would like to get some advice from you guys....Thanks!!!

Hey guys Im new here I bought my maxima 1 week ago. I was wondering are the maximas susceptible to rust? This thing is more rusted than my 83 benz was!! like if the previous owner crashed it into a river. What are your thoughts?

apparently some parts of the maxima are. mostly radiator support, some suspension members and other random parts. Body parts usually don't rust too much unless neglected.....

what kind of info are you looking for exactly?

the OD light does not come on unless i push the button, so that's working fine. i did the diag. test and it came out to be 0505 which means no failure found. but a few days before i plugged it into a ODBII and i got

P0100 MAF VAF CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION
P0705 TRANS RANGE SENSOR CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION

i replaced the MAF the other day, idk if that was the right move, that's what this mechanic guy i asked said to do. and also the reason i waited soo long to respond back was because i was doing a trial run with the car for 9 days straight. the car will shift 100% fine into all gears during the daytime and once the sun sets, it won't go past 3rd gear. idk why or how this is possible but if anyone has any idea's please lemme know. thank you.

p.s. As far as maintence... i don't have the money to get it fully checked out or maintained correctly so i'm trying to do everything on my own =/

Im just curious because I've never seen this much rust before in a car I had a 83 benz that barely had rust if any on it. This car is only from 98 the rust is so bad on the wing support that theres a hole through it! The underside is mostly rusted too, as is the the sun roof part once you open up the roof(not sure what to call it lol). Like i said i think its been through a river lol is there any sections that I should watch out for?? Say if I dont take care of it itll cause problems down the line i guess that would be my main concern

You did a ECU (engine control unit) diagnostic, I think pmohr was referring to TCM (transmission control module) diagnostic.

I have the same rust under my spoiler, its annoying. I'm not sure y but they seem to. I don't think it'll cause you too many problems only annoyance via more work to fix things or higher labor fees due to rust.
