New struts/springs

Hi,

I recently bought a set of KYB-AGXs and H&R springs to replace my stock GXE struts/springs. Today I took them to a shop to have them installed, and after installing the whole setup, the mechanic concluded that the springs were too short in the front (after test driving the car) and put the stock ones back on the new AGXs (but left the back setup). Now, I've searched around the forum and I found many threads where people had good things to say about H&Rs and I couldn't find anyone who had the same experience. Plus, they're only lowered slightly over an inch, so do you guys think that there could potentially be problems or should I just go ahead and get them installed anyways? Otherwise, would it be a good idea to get a different set of springs for the front or adjust the AGXs? My max looks a little weird lowered in the back but not the front.

Thanks

there shouldn't be any problems. many people have used them and not had any real problems. i'd say go ahead and get them put on.

Hi,

So I've had my 97 Maxima for about a year now, and put about 20k miles on it. When I bought it, the previous owner said the Fidanza lightweight flywheel and Stage 2 clutch had been installed about 5k miles before the sale. When I bought the car, I was concerned because I was getting clutch chatter, to the point of grinding when the car was cold-started. He assured me that it would get better as I put mileage on it, but 20k later, it still does it.

Is this normal? Is there any way to get rid of it? I'm ok with a little clutch groan due to the high performance nature of the parts, but this grinding is just annoying.

I'm new to this forum and was just wondering what year maxima would be the best
from 1995-99
I'm going to get my first car soon, so i needed to know which one would be more reliable.

there has been a few "what year is best" threads, you can search for them. but in the end if comes down to do you like the 95/96 style or the 97-99 style. then sometimes but not always 99s have coil and immobilizer issues that can be a pain.

I recently had the engine code 0413. I did also look up which o2 sensor but I am confused of which o2 sensor to replace. I have a 99 SE-L and I am wondering which color wire o2 sensor I am suppose to change or easier which one by this diagram. It is the "left bank" sensor. Thank you!

I'm pretty sure all 4th gens are about same reliability....but when you buy one consider that a 95 has been in existence for 4 years longer than a 99, so stuff might wear out even if mileage is lower than a 99. Take it on a case by case basis, since each car has its own history of owners, maint, etc... Other than that, its just a matter of preference. I personally think 97-99 looks nicer, but to each his own. Also consider different trim levels - stock GXE vs. loaded GXE/GLE. There are a bunch of options available, but the more options you have, the more stuff there is that can break.

it is going to be one of the front ones. you'll have to DL the fsm and figure out which one it is.

Spring Isolator placement?

I'm buying all the small parts I need for my Illuminas + Eibach and was wondering how many spring isolators I needed and where they should be placed. I got that one needs to go on the bottom of the spring to keep it from rubbing against the perch but I also read that I need one on the 2nd from top coil as well? Thanks

either you can take it to the dealer and they can figure it out with a consult tool or start reading on page RS-26 in the FSM on how to do a user mode diag.

I just installed a in rockford fosgate in dash 6 disc in my 97 max gxe. The unit came out of a 02-03 xterra from what i was told. It plugs up perfect and works. However its not loud at all. Do i need a amp to get good sound from the head unit? Will a aftermarket amp wire up to the head unit?
Also in reading stickies i saw something about a antenna amplifier, do i need one of those? Reception is same as stock, sound quality and loudness just isnt there.

the rockford might be like the bose radios that have external amps, not internal. so then you'll need an external amp, or maybe some bose speakers

97 maxima belt squeal

The belt on my maxima squeals when I first start the car, then goes away. It tends to come back when my A/C clutch engages, and also under a heavy amp load, like headlights, rear defog. I have replaced the belt, and the idler pulley. It didn't help. If I spray WD40 on the A/C clutch, the squeal is still there, but it only does it for a second. Anyone have any ideas?

Ok, here's a real noobish question:

I'm trying to decide what to get for my suspension setup and have decided on illuminas.

However, I don't have much experience with lowered/stiffer suspensions. Last night I drove my buddy's brand new 04 330xi, and really liked the suspension setup. Which springs would get me that approximate amount of stiffness and bodyroll? Would I get that from h-techs or H&Rs? Or would I have to go stiffer, like S-techs or progress?

Thanks!

well if you want something like that then get a 330...

If you want the best performing springs than Eibachs or COs are what you would want.

Thanks, but that doesn't answer the question I asked..

Because of my lack of experience with different setups, I'm trying to get an opinion of what would get me close to my point of reference (the beamer). I know that eibachs are some of the stiffest/best performing springs, but I dont' know if they are too stiff for my tastes.

So, in summary, as a 330xi for a reference point, what is close to that?

They'll more than likely rub & stick out in front.

You'll need a lot more than springs to get that feel.

My guess is that he didn't read the instructions. Probably felt there wasn't going to be sufficient suspension travel, and didn't cut the bump stops.

Like I said it will take a lot to get your maxima to feel like a 330....It would be easier to just get one....

But if you want to try and get better handling then you will need Konis/Eibachs or Sprints, SFCs, multiple body stiffening mods, other under carriage stiffening mods, install rear independent suspension, much much better tires than you most likely have and other stuff that arent made for the Maxima.

So in summary, you wont really get the feel of a 330 out of a maxima. They are two different cars made for different things.

/rant

edit also just saw that it was a 330xi....so to add to the mod list you would also need to convert to AWD as well.

Look at post counts man. Should show you something in terms of how often and for what reason I post.
Also ! - You couldn't provide an answer
Also ! - Yes, I have searched and the answer for CAI is still mixed. I have yet to find anything that should shift me over the hump. As far as I know, given, the stock is still the better setup.
Also ! - Thanks for those that have helped people
Also1 ! - Everyone is still a noobie? So if your gonna help then post, but if not, why bother in this thread for noobies? I never considered myself above anything as I continue to learn. I doubt your anything higher.

Bro, I've read and searched the thread but no replies. Not like everything gets answered.

Thanks. Relax. Im stil a MAXIMA owner.

Yea you have more than enough "posts" to know to search. Also this is for new people that dont have the 15 posts yet to start a thread.

A. I can. It all depends on what you want. I personally want to go back to stock but threw away my stock stuff.

B. Stock is best for people that like a smoother curve line and that like to keep all their low end power. NmexMax knows more about why to keep the stock intake than I do though.

C. I answer what I can when I can. I may not know as much as NmexMax or Pmohr but I know what I need to know to get by with my car.

You have the ability to post a thread and the know how to search...go post a thread about CAI vs Stock...we havent had a good meaningful debate on the subject for a while now.

So in conclusion, you need to put more detail into your questions along with not asking them in the newbies under 15 posts thread.

Cant beleive nobody has info on a fosgate 6 disc in a 97 max. pluged right in and fits perfect, seems like a easy upgrade that would be popular.

you're only going to be able to see the springs if you are crouched down looking up at them. not something i would worry about.
but if you really want to, i think any spray paint would get the job done

Big thanks to everyone who has contributed to the org, it has helped me tremendously in the three years I've owned my maxima. Oddly enough, I'm still working on getting to 15 posts

My question, and I suppose it is possible this has been asked and answered in another thread somewhere but after searching for it I haven't found it, why is it that links to threads on the org get messed up. For example, in post #1 on this thread there is a link for searching that, when opened, takes you to a one post thread on on "How to inspect Swaybar endlinks ?" I'm talking about the following link:

Q: Why can't I search maxima.org?
A: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=378748
