ok so my aunt and uncle have a maxima and the antenna mast broke off after a trip to the car wash. i have searched about how to remove the mast and everything, but i am having trouble removing the old mast. how do i remove the last piece of the antenna. it is the little short piece that is on the bottem with the black plastic piece on it. I got the black piece off but can't get that last little section off it seem like it is getting stuck on something. any help would be great.

You can reset it by turning the screw on it with a screw driver...its in the stickies...

BUT

It wont help you pass inspection. The reader will detect the ECU was reset and is still in learning mode...they will fail you and have you come back.

You need to take the whole motor out. It is held on by some 10mm bolts from inside the trunk. Once you have the motor out you will need to take it apart to fix the antennae.

Did you buy a replacement antennae from ebay? Just curious, when I fixed mine I bought the antennae from ebay for like $8.

Ya its very easy to take out. Just peel back the lining a little bit, take out the jack and lug wrench. Take out the 3 (i think 3) bolts and the whole motor will come out the hole where the jack was. You will have to unplug it and take off a hose but all easy. I hope this isnt the reason the car is at the dealership...

Does anyone know if I can check my timing chain timing without removing the timing chain cover? I am trying to tell if my timing chain jumped a sprocket or not. I was running about 70 down the road when all of a sudden it lost about 70% of power. When I pulled over it died then the radiator blew. I had just replaced the water pump about 200 miles ago and everything seemed fine after the replacement. Now I have compression of no more than 55 lbs in any cylinder. Any help?

Yeah, I won't bother. I'm just going to cave in and take it to the dealer. A new vent control valve parts+labor is 227.01

Heres my newbie question

Alright so Im now the owner of a 99 Nissan Max SE automatic. I bought it in somewhat decent condition. The only damage of note is a broken automatic antenna that keeps making noise when I turn on the radio (Ive read the above posts, and plan on doing the same thing) and alot of car cancer. Little spots on the top of the car, little on the side and a big one under the spoiler.

So my question is pretty much your opinions. I want to know what I can do to her for some first maintenance. So far I have the spark plugs, oil filter, air filter lined up, and Im going to give the engine a good cleaning.

What other parts are easy to do that I could replace to up her life/performance?

I have a problem with my car. My ride is 99 SE Limited edition fully loaded with manual transmission First after I cleaned TB and IACV my gas pedal started sticking and it is quite uncomfortable and annoying to force it every time after I was rolling from a hill or waited for a green light.

Another question is when I am using engine brake, let say on speed 50MPH I put it on 3rd releasing clutch smoothly , RPM jump to 3000 or more, am I burning my clutch by doing this or not?

What size of insert is needed for the inner tie rod tool? I see the Lisle tool and others come with multiple size inserts.

I have a slight vibration during idle steering wheel synchronously with transmission stick Transmission stick shakes with bigger amplitude. What could it be?

Might need a TB cleaning or PCV valve.

I did both and even more. I cleaned TB and IACV, changed PCV valve and cleaned MAF. It became much better I slightly feel it in the steering wheel, but stronger in the stick. I am thinking could it be the engine pillows?

By the way after cleaning TB my gas pedal started sticking whenever I roll on neutral or wait for green light. I don't know what to do with it.

Another thing about vibration after 70Mph. I took the car to mechanic to check out the alignment, but he said I need tire rotation. After that I think it became even worse. I am thinking going back and telling him what I am thinking about him. I don't think it's the balance, cause I did it when I put my new tires in winter. Anyways I'll check the alignment first. Can you guys suggest anything else?

I am about at the end of my rope with my maxima, which is a 1995. I inhereted it from my fiance, and its body is all banged up from her living in chicago. I plan on fixing that as soon as I can get it running right. its exhaust is loud. I dont care about that though. What i care about is when i floor it, it doesnt take off quick like i know 190hp should. its very slow. Its RPMs will go all the way up to six and it will shift very hard. i have replaced the knock sensor, all 6 injectors, all 6 plugs, all 6 coil packs. it still runs like ****. please help me. I want this thing to run good. I want it to be able to squeal the tires. for crying out loud the AC makes the engine die sometimes.

Considering everything you've done, maybe you have a bad MAF? Usually a bad KS is the culprit for loss of power, but you already took care of that.

Are you using factory spec NGK plugs? Factory coilpacks (non-knock off ebay ones)??

As for the AC making the car die sometimes, have you had your alternator and battery checked lately?

Other possible culprits are the following:
Incorrect ignition timing
Incorrectly gapped spark plugs
Problem with fuel inj. system ie fuel pump is dying
Clogged air filter
Fuel filter clogged or impurities in the fuel system
Low or even cylinder compression

There is a code for MAF, but I was under the impression that was just a sensor. Can something like a computer or sensor have that great of an effect on how the car runs? If so, then how can i test the MAF to see if it is good or not. I got a mention from a friend to try cleaning the throttle body with seafoam. What is a throttle body and where is it? Im new to working on cars, but i can catch on quickly. Also i looked under poor beat up maxine (what i named it) and found an exhaust leak right after the exhaust manifold. would that contribute to a gross loss of power? all my coilpacks were bought from autozone. very very expensive, cost me about 70 dollars a coil pack. plugs are nkg. Is this car OBD 2? Can i use a AutoZone scanner on this thing?

There you go. The MAF is a very important part of the system and how your car performs.....it's more than just an insignificant sensor. And yes, a computer or sensor greatly affects how a car runs! The computer aka ECU aka ECM is getting information from all the sensors around the car and then sending the appropriate signal to the various components of the car so everything works like it should.

Skip seafoaming your Max. Do a quick search and and you'll see tons of threads on this subject. Some swear it makes a difference, so swear it's useless.

An exhaust leak would not cause a gross loss of power, but a bad MAF would.

Sounds like you have quality spark plugs and coilpacks. Hopefully the spark plugs are gapped correctly.

Since your Max is a 95, it's OBD I.

98 SE Overheating

Hey Guys,

I have a 98 SE that is overheating at idle. As long as I am cruising at highway speeds, it is fine because there is enough air coming through to keep the temp normal. I noticed yesterday that neither of my radiator fans are running and the a/c is blowing out hot air. I have replaced the relays and fuses to the fans and still nothing. Do you guys think I have a thermostat problem or are my fan motors shot? I'm trying to avoid an expensive trip to the dealership because I only plan on having the car until the end of the year at the longest. I appreciate any info you guys could pass my way. Thanks.

Fan motors if they're not working even after you've replaced relays and such.

I have been told by a friend that it could be the thermostat or the temperature sending unit. I just want a quick fix for this car because I'm getting an 09 Maxima as soon as they come out later this year!

My KS sensor is broken therefore my car is running in safe mode and gets no more then 14 MPG. I am replacing the sensor myself in a few days. but here are my questions.
if i replace it will the check engine light go off automatically.?
And how do i get my car off this gass guzzling " safe mode " i read about?

try unplugging the coolant temperature sensor to see if the fans come on while the car is running... if they do then that sensors shot...and be careful

Ok, so that is a valid thought, I'm not discrediting it...BUT, if your fans aren't working w/ the AC on, that is a CLEAR indicator. Also, try the ECT plug as stated above, but again, AC = no fans on = fans FTL.

Couple that with the fact that t-stats typically fail the other way, (too cold).

By the way, the 09 Maxima has been out for several weeks now
