Suspension. replacement or modified?
I've got a 97 se with 120k miles. Basicly I need new struts. My question is should i just replace it with stock or aftermarket struts? The shocks determine the front end roll to an extent, right? I have a FSTB, but how big of a difference would aftermarket performace struts be compaired to new stock struts? Also what are some rough prices? thanks

Not quite...
Maxs dont have shocks in the front, they have struts. Anyway, the main difference you'll feel with stiffer struts will be harder bumps and the steering response will be quicker. The springs control how much the body rolls in a turn, but the struts control how quickly it rolls.
OEM struts are very expensive compared to aftermarket. If you plan on keeping the OEM springs, then Tokicos or KYB GR-2's are recommended.

Shocks and struts basically perform the same function...they dampen out the motions of the spring. The spring stiffness, suspension geometry, structural stiffness, and antiroll bars determine cornering stability (i.e. body roll).
Ride quality is a combination of suspension geometry, spring rate, and strut/shock dampening force. In a well designed car, you can engineer a suspension which delivers a smooth ride and good handling. Like BMWs. They ride well, but are also very responsive. The Maxima, on the other hand, is a compromise...we start with a smooth ride but if you want handling, you need to opt for a stiffer combo which will jarr your kidneys over the bumps.
