No more pinstripe!
Shaved my pinstripe today using a drill with an eraser tool attached to it today. Took 10 minutes, and looks great!
Before:

AFTER!

I recommend anyone who has a white Max with a black pinstripe to do this...makes the lines of the car look alot smoother.
The "eraser wheel" that is attached to the end of the drill is like $20.00. If you live in Seattle, let me know and I'll let you borrow mine if need be. (It's also good for getting tar off, so I figured it was a good investment)

It is just a sticker, and yes, it is above the clearcoat.
Just bring some tar/bug remover and that tool I used.
You can get the tool at any Auto Body supply shop. Cost like $20.00.
Just ask for the wheel made out of eraser material for taking off pinstripes. They'll know what you mean.
Then use the tar/bug remover (I used blue goop stuff made by Blue Magic) to get the excess glue off after using the wheel, then wash the car.
Anyone looking at the car, even close up, would not know that there was ever a pinstripe there. It's completely gone....but my paint is white and not faded at all. Results may vary.
You could also use a hairdryer to heat it up, then just pull the sticker off. But it takes alot longer than using the tool.

I used Blue Magic bug/tar remover for the rest, then gave it a good washing. 100% gone now.

I too removed my pin stripe when I first got the car. Pinstripes are the biggest pet peeve of mine on a car. They will fade and eventually look like crap. Then you'll have these nice uneven lines when you go to take it off.

I peeled the stripe off by hand first. I had a huge *** stripe with some big sticker up front that said Cartier Edition. I bet it was as big as my open hand...looked hideous. looks better now.

WD-40
I have a race car that I change livery on each season. It requires removing all kinds of vinyl sticker-type stuff much like the material used for pin stripes -- just lots more surface area. I use a hair dryer to carefully heat up and remove the plastic and WD-40 to remove what remains of the glue. The WD-40 has some kind of solvent in it the softens the glue stuff and it provides a slippery surface that reduces any scratching. Using it has worked well for me for over 10 years. Just heat, remove, strip and wax. Done.
And nobody's mentioned *painted* pin stripes. I wonder if it would be such a good idea to try and remove the painted kind with the aforementioned ereaser-thingie. Just wondering.
