K&N question....
there is a k&n filter that just drops into your stock air box, and there is a k&n that comes on the stillen intake. the drop in has almost no performace gain (none on the butt dyno) and isnt much louder than stock. the stillen on the other hand should add a few hp and will definitely be louder.
the k&n drop in has been dyno'd by turbo magazine to add 4hp to the wheels which is roughly 6-8hp overall...i had an intake on my car (not stillen, it was custom) and it had problems w/ water which cost me $1000 to get it fixed and restored to stock...i have recently put the k&n drop in filter in (since i am done w/ intake after that $1k) and i have defenitely noticed a difference. you are able to notice quicker throttle response...the only problem is that it is not much louder than stock (at over 5000 rpm, it omits a sort of whiney tone and you can actually hear the air coming into your engine...in stock form, you couldn't hear this)
my friends have all also noticed the difference and they say it feels faster, too...4hp to the wheels for $50 is a really good deal...i'd go w/ the k&n drop in

Regarding the Stillen Intake . . .
Check out my question to Sprung.
The K&N Panel Filter does seem to yield a little better throttle reponse. There is some controversy as to how good a job it does at removing fine particulate matter, however. Guess it just depends on whose data you choose to accept.

Regardless of how much horsepower you gain (which we all agree has to be at least 2HP), the filter lasts a hell of a lot longer, and is less than $50. The filter pays for itself (if it truly does live up to its standard of lasting 100,000 miles).
K&N filter after cleaning
As someone said the K&N filters should last 100,000 miles but every time you clean the K&N filter the cotton has a tendency to develop small holes in the cotton fibers. So the more times you clean the filter the more holes that develop in the cotton. As a result the more dirt that can get through to your engine.
in the turbo magazine article, they dyno'd the drop in filter when they only had an exhaust on the car...i realize that some mags may not have the best drivers (and i trust you that turbo is one of them)...they turbocharged the max and could only run 14.7 i think...did i mention it was also intercooled? for money you put down to get it turbo'd and intercooled and have it only run .2 secs better than someone on these boards and have it run .6 secs better than turbo's original time isn't worth it
alright, anyways, back on the subject...i believe that dyno's don't lie...i had an intake about 6 months ago, and after about 3 months of use, i started up my car one night, and the service light was on. i figured it was something minor and i would bring it to the dealership in the morning but once i started going around the block, my engine wouldn't go over 3k rpm...when it got upto 3k, it would make this sound (the sound the car makes when you forget to shift and it goes upto redline and can't go any farther and it just stays there for a couple seconds)...i brought it into the dealership and they said the intake had let water or dirt in and my mass air flow meter was busted...it wasn't even a CAI and it let water or dirt in...so basically it took them about 2 weeks and $1000 and they restored it to stock...i then decided that i would not deal with an intake again because i have friends who have had the same thing happen but worse (they blew their entire engine...and since the intake voids the warranty, that was $8k out of their pocket)...when i saw the turbo magazine article about the k&n drop in filter, i immediately bought it and put it in...i could feel the difference much more (i never really felt a difference w/ the intake but i hadn't had the car for too long then...i'm pretty sure that was why)...w/ the filter, i took a test drive right after i installed it, and i loved it...there is a quicker throttle response and after 5k rpm, you can actually hear a whistling sound of wind coming into the engine...the one thing i liked about the intake (other than the fact it looked a lot better) was the fact that it gave me some really nice sounding noise above 3k rpm...
i'm not sure if anyone has seen my other post about an intake silencer, but my friend told me his friend took his intake silencer off of his mustang gt and it made it a lot louder...he looked at my engine and showed me my intake silencer...i'd love to take it off and get a much louder sound, but i don't want to run the risk of dirt or water getting into my engine again...has anyone ever heard of an intake silencer?
