Are we trying to see how big it can get? It's already the biggest on the org!

Has anyone in the NE had their engine pulled yet? No
Delete this thread or unsticky it and let it DIE so Steve & John can start a new one with updates only. If they need more help they can always ask in another thread with links.

John, I think you need to seriously relax a little. All of your posts to this thread have a negative and condescending tone. You're NOT running the show here, and it's kind of getting annoying reading your belittling comments.

Slow down bro!

Anyone else get the urge to smack the hell out of those Altima guys ? I mean.. They seem to have a real problem with the Maxima being the superior of the two cars..

I sensed a real attitude from some of them..

I wouldnt mind racing a modified Altima..all i see on the roads are the four bangers though..and if its a V6 its automatic..

Ok, point well taken. In that case, like someone already mentioned, can we make this thread so that only a select few can post updates to it? Perhaps lock this thread, and just open up a new one that has progress updates on it. Something like that would definitely cut down the irrelevent and "newbie" posts. Just a thought.

If you are as involved in this matter as you make it seem, then I, and all the others here, really appreciate your efforts!

Well, admittedly I didnt read all 33 pages. But I read about 12... I guess my point of view is that I have owned 10 Nissans in my life. All bought brand new. I have never taken any of them in for anything other than routine maintenance except a 96 SE-R that had a sensor go bad and triggered a CEL (took them a 1/2 hour to fix). I think thats pretty amazing. That being said, I bought the Maxima because I liked the way it drives, and I had a 97 SE 5-speed that I loved. Regardless of the actual horsepower the car is putting down, I still think it totally hauls **** for such a big car. I have owned 19 cars total in my life, so the other 9 were non-Nissan, and of various makes/models. Nearly all of those were taken in for some sort of defect or in-warranty repair. Therefore, I would never take any action against Nissan for something like this. I dont feel ripped off. I test drove the car, I liked it, I bought it. Whether I think it has 255hp or 240hp, it still feels the same. Thats my $.02, and its not even worth that much.

Steve,

Ya gotta remeber the issues.

1. Have you been wronged? Probably..

2. What are your actual damages? How has this impacted you in a monetary situation? Nothing..

You may get a 500 sorry check or 5 yr warrenty

However maybe the punitive fee against nissan will make them stop doing this.

Well someone needs to get off their *** and get the engine dynoed. All I see is mostly everyone waiting for someone else to do the dirty work, so they can get the rewards. I say everyone that wants to sue pay around $20-50 each to have someone on this forum pull their engine and have it dyno tested that way. Believe me get about 50-100 people sending $20-50 and things will be done quick. The point is that the lawyer can't really do anything until the engine itself is dynoed.

Locally an engine dyno testing runs around $400-1000 depending on how long it takes to tune it. Also one would have to install the full factory exhaust and drive accesories. It would only cost say around $1000-1800 labor for the removal/install of the engine, EFI wire harness + ECU, exhaust removal. Figure $400-700 for dyno testing, $100-400 to rent a nissan CONSULT to datalog and this case can be proven for less than $3000. If the motor doesn't make over 240Bhp then my friends you have a case. Otherwise putting lightweight 15in wheels + advance the base timing could easily show a 10whp gain on the dynojet.

I said I'd do it for $500 and an unconditional warranty...johnvt1111 laughed at me...

now they don't have a car to dyno...who's laughing now? Carlos Ghosn? I'm not laughing...but I don't think anyone with half a brain would allow them to take an engine out and dyno it...even with the best technicians in the world working on the car...unless I were getting something out of it...

I think a donation is a great idea. I'd donate to that cause. I asked if we could do that a long time ago, but they just laughed again...

I have driven a 3.5 SE Altima. Actually, thats what I showed up at Nissan last weekend looking to buy. However the Max had much better lease deals. The Altima was a manual trans, and so is my Max. Dunno man, they both felt pretty similar to me. I'm a former LS1 f-body owner though (and I have a WRX now) so most cars feel "slow" to me in general. Did they mislead us? Maybe... My buddy at work has a Hyundai Sonata that he got in May and all he received was a free extended warranty for their whole horsepower debaucle. If you're truly bent at Nissan, the best recourse is to never buy a car from them again. Although, I didnt buy the extended warranty, so if you guys can get me one then I'll take it of course.

the altima feeling the same as the Maxima is what I was getting at...they do feel the same in the Acceration department.

I am not "truly bent" at Nissan, but if I can get an extended warranty out of the deal, I'll take it.

With the Hyundai debacle, there wasn't much done (just a warranty) but with Mazda there was a buy-back, and with Ford, they added the missing power.

peace

Misled nothing the cars have different gearing. The max with shorter gearing would pull from a roll vs the taller geared altima. Hell the old impala SS had a detuned LT1 that made around 260hp IIRC. In a 4000lb car it doesn't really feelfast. Also the 240hp pathfinder feels slower than a 240hp altima does that mean the pathfinder has less power?

Why would the warranty be voided? If you told the service manager that nissan has under-rated the maxima and you'd pay the labor to have the engine/wire harness + ECU removed they shouldn't void the warrenty at all. Either way if you win the case nissan would probably extend your warranty to 100k/10 years, or if you lose then your SOL and everyone was wrong. Either way the stealership gets paid regardless.

Besides armed with a FSM, and the proper tools all it takes is 2 people to pull the engine. After every hose/electrical connector is labeled the install is alot easier. DIY would save at least $2k in labor costs and speed up the process. Then all one has to do is pay for the dyno testing. I'll go on the record to say No one yet will put their $$ where their mouth is!!. I believe it is the factory 17in wheels + the retarded base ignition timing causing the "low" dyno numbers. As I stated before the 99 pre-fix Cobra's had to go through certain test parameters to prove they were under-rated.

The reason we intitially thought we had a case is because when they dyno the Altima 3.5SE at the wheels, they are showing up at about the same RearWheelHorsePower (205 horsepower) as the 3.5L Maximas. This case was not spurned because the acceleration of the two are the same. We are realized that weight and gearing would play (did play) a factor in the cars putting up the same performance numbers.

I didn't say my warranty would be voided...I just wanted the engineers that took my car apart to be responsible for my car. Without question. If they are such good technicians...then why not?

I guess if I had any minor problems with my car afterward, I wouldn't want the headache of trying to figure out if it was related to it being a faulty component from Nissan or if it had gone bad because the engineers messed something up. That's more troubleshooting than I have time for.

The dealership's aren't getting anything out of this. They aren't doing the engine pull/install...a group of Automotive Engineers are...and they are some of the best in the country.

and we are going through similar tests to prove that the VQ in the Maxima is underrated. The verdict is still out. No one is saying...They DEFINATELY hosed us on horsepower, but if they misled us, they misled us, period. If johnvt1111 and his lawyer get this engine dyno'd, we'll know the outcome sooner rather than later. He has a great team on this, and there is nothing to argue about.

I just wanted to clarify some things with you, as you seem to have misunderstood points I and others were trying to make. And what we are doing in this process.

Re: Hey Nismo87SE...

Ok no problem . However you do know realize that the altima has a different exhaust system and smaller wheels vs the maxima. I've seen cars gain 4-8whp just by changing to lighter weight wheels. For instance lets suppose someone puts some Bogart 15in rims with 22x8x15 slicks for dyno testing. That wheel/tire combo would be around 27-30lbs total. Given stock 17s are 44-47lbs that itself would show as a 5-9whp gain on the dynojet at the wheels. Engine power didn't change but the dyno numbers went up.

Another point is test parameters must be standardized(?). Case in point here is how BlueOvalNews handled the 99 Cobra http://www.bonforums.com/mustang/ . From the reading I did they some how had contacts inside headquarters and thus access to alot of info. That is how they discovered why ford tried to cover up the 99 cobra's power issues. Looks like you guys need an insider at nissan to help out .

Just a thought

Ok, of course it is just my luck that I find this website after I bought my new '03SE two weeks ago. I traded in my '98SE for the new one thinking I was upgrading from 190hp to 255hp & now I find-out I might of gotten the shaft. Guys please excuse my "uneducated mechanical engineering" brain & enlighten my inquiring mind.

I was wondering after reading several pages of this thread, do the numbers show that the altima is really 240hp or did nissan fudge those numbers too? Also, assuming honda is right in saying their (ugly) '03 accord has 240hp, what if you had a three way race - maxima/altima/accord? Would all three stay relative equal or would the lower torque kill the accord or would the accord leave both the maxima & altima b/c neither one has (assumption) 240hp? Just some thoughts that came to me after reading some posts.

If ya'll get ready to go through w/ a class action lawsuit or whatever it takes to get the 15hp (I thought I bought w/ the car two weeks ago) count me in. It is quite aggravating to find-out I didnt get everything thing I was told I was getting, especially for the amount of $$$$ I spent. Thanks for past & future info.

In looking at the dynos side by side, they look the same. Steve (DMBMaxima) will chime in to give you the full details on what to do. Just keep in touch with this thread.

In looking at the dynos side by side, they look the same. Steve (DMBMaxima) will chime in to give you the full details on what to do. Just keep in touch with this thread.
I as well would like a piece of the pie. I will keep reading. If anybody needs anything out of Atlanta regarding this, please let me know.

Thanks for past & future info.
count you in for what? And the class action is getting on the way........and yes the number on the altima are correct

Count me in for whatever legal action is necessary to get the 15hp I thought I had.

In a class action everyone who owns a car will be notified by mail, this case probably involves somewhere around 300,000 cars, so you don't need to be considered counted in per se, because everyone who owns one will receive a letter telling them what they get or don't get if we lose, but we won't, but when we win, the letter will outline exactly what measures are done to compensate the 15 h/p loss. I think people are misled that if they don't somehow notify someone or let us know about it, they won't get their compensation, but in reality, even the grandmother who has no clue, drives the car 15 miles a week, will still get a letter.........so be patient, things are happening

This has probably been asked already but I haven't really been keeping up with this thread since it has gotten kinda redundant but is it possible that the 2k and 2k/1 guys may have gotten stiffed as well on our hp?

Could Nissan have overinflated our hp numbers as well?

I know some of you won't care because you are 2k2/2k3 biased but those of you who are not please respond.

]i have raced a 2003 accord numerous times.we either are neck and neck or i get a slight lead off the line from the higher torque ,depends on how my automatic takes off from the line.but for most part are neck and neck up to 80 -100mph.i work with my friend who has the accord and we race on our way home.mine is a stock 02 gls
