My 96 rattle when it's 1) cold, 2) oil level is low and 3) FRAM filters.

Take away any of those three things and the rattle goes away.

Or is it ok to ignore the sound if its not going to cause/causing any problems.

Thanks
I don't know for sure how much the TSB would cost but they take apart half your engine so it would be expensive.

As far as I have determined reading this sight, the rattling is not causing damage to anything other than maybe your sanity. My 2K2 does the same thing and I plan to ignore until it is unbearable. It has been doing it for a year or so now and it hasn't gotten any worse.

According to http://www.nissanhelp.com/ownership/.../NTB03-060.htm it applies to 03 Maximas as well. Print that out and show them.

-Has anyone done this TSB #60???
-How much did it end up costing?
-Did it actually take care of the issue?
-Is this something I could order from Dave B and have my mechanic do?

Trying to stay away from the stealership.

i too get this rattle, about 1 sec, only when its warmer out but the car is dead cold...the VTC sprocket is under the timing chain cover, and that would be complete hell to replace, personally i would just live with the rattle rather then fix it

try the Wix filters and stay away from those sorry *** Fram filters...Fram has never been the same since bought buy Allied signal about 15-20 yrs ago. Fram of the 60's- the early 80's was the real deal in reliability and durability and was the world's standard for racing oil filters (HP series).....

Mine has done it since I got it. Last just a second or two. Since Nissan only put out a TSB instead of a recall, it seems the noise isn't the sound of impending engine failure. At the last Dallas area Maxima meet I was at, it seemed all the 5.5 gens had the start-up rattle, regardless of mileage.

I got a price from DaveB a couple weeks ago for $332... its not an easy job and not cheap either. It pisses me off as well, but I'm going to have to deal with it.
I changed my oil filter to a Mobil1 (m1-108) this week so we'll see if that helps much.
I agree with Scruit (post #42).
It definitely rattles more when the oil level is low... sucks for us that have an oil burning 3.5!
It's just kustom, if anyone asks thats in the car.

Try an OEM filter. Mine improved w/ the M1, but, who knows, maybe yours will w/ the OEM Nissan unit.

I have the timing chain rattle too...lasts for about 1/2 second, right after the starter cranks. Doesn't bother me too much.
