Will it damage the engine in the long run to use 87?
It will run fine on 87 and will not damage anything. I ran my 2001 on 87 for 99k miles, zero problems. I occasionally put in some 91 but that didn't seem to make any difference.

The consensus is to use at least 91, most use 93.

Hi,

Well, I am new here, but don't have a question. Rather want to say hi to 5gen enthusiasts. I just bought a black 2002 Maxima GLE with 97k miles on it. Any forumers from Bklyn, NY?

I'm so glad I found these forums, it answered a lot of my questions. Hope to stay here for a quite a while since I'm planning on modifying it a lil bit... well right after I pay it off (this Summer).

ABS light/braking problem

Hey guys, I'm new here and searched for my problem but came up empty handed. Hopefully I'm not out of line for posting this. Also, sorry for the length of the post. I have an 02 GLE with 109K miles, and I've been having some intermittent problems with my brakes lately. It started about 4 months ago with some brake squeaking and having to push harder on the brakes to stop. (I realize this usually just means you need new pads, and thought that was true this time until yesterday). So I changed my pads (old ones had oddly a lot of actual pad left on them, thought maybe they were just cheap pads that the previous owner put on.. so I put better ceramic brakes on). The car seemed to brake better and the squeaking subsided. Fast forward a few months and my ABS light comes on and off randomly. Took the Max to my mechanic and he ran the code and he told me it was a faulty left rear abs sensor. He also told me that it wasn't necessary to replace (wouldn't affect the integrity of the brakes). I have not replaced it yet as I am in between jobs right now. Yesterday I was coming up to a stoplight and pushed my brakes and out came the most awful sound from the front drivers side brakes (metal on metal sound) and my brakes seemed to be jumpy (not grabbing properly). The car still came to a stop but I had to press pretty hard to do so. I drove it once later that night and it did not do this (acted completely normal). I drove it twice today, and it did it once (braking normally every other time). My ABS light is not on now. I have plenty of brake fluid, and plenty of brake pads. I have no idea what this could be. PLEASE HELP!!

Sounds like your faulty ABS sensor is reporting a false positive and causing your ABS system to engage when it shouldn't.

Replace the sensor.

AE headlights

I was wondering if I could do this mod AE mod to the headlights on my 2000 se. I like the look, but I don't want to pay $100s of dollars for black oem replacements. I wasent sure if the anneversity edition had different headlights. The reason I post this is because u can't search for "AE", which makes me search for just "headlights" (kind of a broad term)

You can do it. There are plenty of how-to's all over. It involves baking the headlight, scuffing the paint, painting, and sealing it back up.

Or...you can spend $70 for a pair...

The best option for you is to get the 02-03 HID housings, and install DDE's or other illuminated rings onto them. All the eBay products are low quality and poor illumination.

Hi! First time posting on this wonderful and very informative forum. I just bought a 2000 Maxima GLE. The car has no alloy rims. Just plain wheel covers. Doesn't have a rear spoiler. Are these two features optional? Should I be concerned?

Very general question, no?

Like every car, certain parts are known to break, deteriorate, or need replacement. But to generally answer your question, yes, they're reliable cars.

Hello.
I just got a CEL and the code is P0158 which is bank 2 sensor 2 high voltage.
Is this an indicator of a dead O2 sensor? This is non Cali spec.
Also, bank 2 sensor is it the O2 sensor below the cat that is by the radiator?
Thanks.

Would a ebay exhaust b pipe and the pipe connecting to the muffler line up with the stock muffler?

I want to free up the exhaust but don't like the looks or want the noise from the ebays muffler.

I would assume so, if the b-pipe is made for your car.

I've read that ebay exhausts will take some fabbing to mate with the stock muffler. I believe cattman b pipes can mate with the stock muffler and vice versa.

Thanks for this thread. I'm not on the website much especially since I got rid of my 93' Max SE a while back. Just bought a 2000 GXE(5 spd, 73k) and it runs great. I'm no mechanic but I wanted to ask, what year did the max go from timing belts to chains and if mine has a belt when should I change it? Thanks for any response..

how do you remove the 02 side skirts? I was going to just pull them cuz I thought it was just some tabs on the bottom. Do you have to take the front mudguard off before hand?

All VQ's had timing chains. So, 95- present day Maximas all have timing chains. In the 3rd gen, there were 2 different engine options and one of them had a timing belt.

Clear side markers and a JWT intake, followed by some lowering springs or coilovers.

first of all - try to erase the codes at autozone or some store like that or mechanic and drive for 50-100 miles to see if it comes up.
Usually it will take 20-50 miles to come back up, if it doesn't - less headache

and that is correct - that is the one by radiator

you could use this link for more info http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...on-issues.html

I'm going to assume that by ALARM you actually mean REMOTE START. And by 'hitting the lock button' you actually mean that's the button combination you press to engage the remote start.

Even if it were the remote start (more specifically the tach signal needing to be re-learned by the remote start), this issue would not pose a problem when you're starting the car with the key!

I think you need a new mechanic.

Oh and yes, some Maximas (forget which years) have auto-up windows. OR, your alarm system is programmed to roll them up.

All Maxima's are able to roll up/down the windows after you shut off your vehicle and remove the key. The windows are active for like 15-30seconds or when you open a door.

My first post here. Need some help

Hello folks,

I have a 2003 Maxima GLE with 195K on it. Running good still. Need's some serious suspension work. Goodyear place says she needs the following:

Rack & Pinion system
Wheel bearing pack (Left front)
Rear struts
Tie rod arm (front)
Two tires

Can't disagree with what it needs, but I'm seeking some advice on what I can do to knock some of the cost down. The above-listed work (apart from tires) is around $2,200.

I really think that if I get this work done, I can get 60-70K more miles out of her. Love the car, I'm the first owner. She's been a warrior for me. Help please.

-Buy the wheel bearing off of this guy:
http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...aring-hub.html

-Rear struts are about $60 each.
-Tires are tires..
-Tie rod ends, get Moog branded ones off of Amazon or www.rockauto.com

The above are easy jobs and any mechanic or even yourself can do them.

- Rack and pinion - you'll have to find someone that knows what they're doing for that one.

Smaller text helps - big text and all caps is considered yelling

Get a second opinion, especially on the rack and pinion, which would be your big-ticket item. Why is it broken? Is it leaking? How can they tell with a worn tie rod end?

If you're really tight for cash, look around for used parts from low mileage cars, or call Courtesy Nissan since they'll sometimes give org'ers a deal. Do not buy made-in-china stuff from Autozone unless research gives the all-clear that the part is ok. We had a heated discussion about GP Axles from Advance Auto that had issues just recently.

Tie rod ends and shocks are normal for that mileage, although doing all four would make it drive like it was brand new again (if you're going cheap, get KYB, if you want a slightly nicer ride get Tokico Blues - do NOT get Monroe shocks). A wheel alignment will need to be done anyhow if you're swapping the tie rod end.

KYB vs Blues are debatable. "Nicer" can be defined in different ways. Agree with you on avoiding Monroe.

Thanks for the advice, fellas (or ladies, as the case may be)

I'm going to do this project in phases and hope that nothing major hits for a long time subsequent to these repairs. If I do get another major, I'm selling her for parts.
