Advance timing with android phone?
When looking at the app in the marketplace it specifically states 2001-2007. And if anyone has taken the time to review the information posted in this thread they would of known that. Not trying to be a jerk, but this is the reason I stopped posting and answering questions in this thread. IS IT THAT HARD TO READ THROUGH WHAT'S ALREADY POSTED???
So, for those too lazy to read and constantly sending me messages or emails... here it goes.
-The app name is Car Gauge Pro. It is an Android app, NOT AVAILABLE FOR IPHONE.
-You need a bluetooth elm327 WITH kwp2000 functionality. I personally use the VGate model. Other working elm's are listed in the details of the app in the marketplace.
-With this app you can do the following:
**(When connected to ECM)
--Advance or retard timing 2 degrees
--Adjust idle rpm's from 0-250+
--Reset learned fuel settings
--Perform idle air relearn
--Turn off individual cylinders
--And of course check for faults and clear codes
-----A FULL LIST OF PIDS THIS APP WILL READ IS LISTED PREVIOUSLY IN THIS THREAD!
-You can also perform ABS testing with this app.
--So far, this is only CONFIRMED with Auto users. It seems the 6 speed guys are having issues, no idea about the 5 speed or CVT guys.
-Though the app states model years 2001-2007, the timing advance feature has been confirmed on a 2000 Maxima.
-THIS APP IS FOR CONSULT 2 VEHICLES ONLY!!!
@@@ To those complaining that the developer isn't supporting you because you want your Consult 1,3,or even 4 vehicles to have access... think about it a sec. To gain access to the software for those devices from Nissan, it costs a HECK of a lot of money. Plus time and effort to pull and rewrite the code, test, and so on. Either INCREASE the market that desires this ("create the buzz"), or help fund the project! Or even better... just go grab alternative software and cables from other sources that already exist out there for your vehicle.

Thanks for the update. Very concise. I would like to add that after researching a lot there seems to be a substantial amount of clone elm327s with limited functionality
on the market.
First I bought the common very small mini elm327 that is a transparent blue. It will connect with Torque but not Car Gauge and records errors. I apparently put 2227 horse to the wheels tdy. I also tried the vgate elm version which does not connect using Car Gauge Pro and gives numerous errors. I have used different versions of android 4.0+
In frustration I purchased the Obdlink mx at $180. I hope it connects.
After more research I think I should have tried the mid-priced BAFX as there are a tonne of good reviews. I have read that some people recieve good elms and clones from the same vendor so I guess it's luck of the draw.

Here's a "throwback" picture I posted on a previous page. You can see the Nissan features (and years) for the app. ALSO... Has KNOWN WORKING ADAPTERS listed under hardware requirements. Remember, you need an adapter with kwp2000 functionality!
As stated before DO NOT BUY FROM CHINESE SELLERS ON EBAY!

I hope that OBDlink MX works. For what it costs, it damn well better lol.
On a side note, I was able to finally get ahold of Issac. It seems you have to email him directly to get a response. He asked for debug logs and so I sent him a few. Hopefully I hear back soon.
What's the old saying? You can lead a horse to water but...
For those reading this the first time. Grab a VGate for like $10-$12 and call it a day. Not sure why some of you grabbed elm's that are not even listed or Chinese knockoffs when it was stated numerous times in this thread that the VGate was the cheapest route and KNOWN to work flawlessly.
Some of you could of saved some time, effort, and money if you took the time to read through.

It should work, but it doesn't-- So because it worked for you, I'm an idiot who doesn't read threads.
I've read through the thread, I still have no answers. I went to the developer's forum for answers before I ever posted here.
Perhaps you could volunteer ideas instead of regurgitating what was already posted in this thread.
I'm not trying to be a jerk about this, i'm legitimately trying to fix the problem I have.
When Issac gets back to me about those logs, I will report back what he finds.
So like I mentioned. VGate does not work for me either. Yes it is listed on Car Gauge app site yet it doesn't work. If not Ebay/Amazon then what is the alternative?? Well now that Bafx is also junk I have no idea.
Once again, VGate elm327 version 1.5 that I have does not work and produces errors.

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately that is the same vendor I purchased from. You mention not buying a Chinese dongle off eBay. The vgate you recommend is Chinese and Amazon and eBay sell the same Chinese products. Actually almost everything electronic is Chinese.
I don't understand your frustration. All I want to do is advance my timing with car gauge but after 3 weeks of trials no luck. Thanks for the fact it worked for you. For people it doesn't work for I would like to know how they got it going.
My problem is not pairing. The problem is connecting to the ecu.
I hope the Obdlink mx connects but at $180 I doubt this is a good alternative for everyone.
Please feel free to not respond.

Deleted my unneeded "out of frustration" comments. Sorry to go a bit postal, tired of being chewed out via pm and email for dumb crap, 99% user error. Hope the recently reposted info helps.
Interesting, testing out the BAFX adapter on the Ram 1500 with car gauge pro and it works damn near perfect. So fast compared to what i've been getting with the Vgate on the maxima.
Torque connects just fine with the adapter, but it keeps cycling through all the protocols and can't figure which one goes for the maxima. Eventually it goes through all of them and I get an error of no response from ECU or something like that. I did set it to the right protocol, but it just gives the error message faster that way.
I wonder if the solder joint on the chip is bad for the ISO input. The Ram is VPW input so that's a totally different channel from what our Nissan's give. Here is a diagram of the ELM chip from the data sheet on the below website:

Here's some information on the ELM327 for those who are interested.
http://elmelectronics.com/obdic.html#ELM327
I'm curious to find out if we can install the genuine chip in one of these clone devices. I'll take one apart and see what it looks like-- this could be a really cheap alternative to the OBDlink MX since the missing link for all these adapters is the clone chips. We can also get version 2.0 of the firmware.
The chip from their website is just under $24, and shipping is $8. So if this works with the 10 Vgate knock off we could have a comparable OBDlink MX for $42.
Anybody know if this has been tried before? Google didn't come up with anything from what I tried.

Interesting! I might of taken this route.. A genuine elm327 2.0 would be choice at under $50. Wide range of compatibility with sleep mode like the elm327 1.4b.
After reading the elm site I notice what I think was mentioned before; EVERY elm327 1.5 version is a clone. I can't seem to actually google a legit version 1.4b or 2.0.
This is posted on the elm site: A few clone makers have carefully worded ads that make it seem like they are using genuine version v1.4a, v1.5, v1.5a, or v2.1 Elm chips. These can not use Elm Electronics ICs as we have never made those versions..
I would say the knock off elm327s 1.5 and the like are a gamble. Some work, others work but not well and others just don't work at all. It would be good to find a legit elm327 2.0 dealer.

I left negative feedback for the BAFX device, which seems to finally have gotten their attention. I'll report back on if this device will work with the car and whether the BAFX company is even reputable.
I have a 03 Maxima. Just tried it today and it worked. Skimmed through all the posts and here is what I did.
Bought this device: http://www.ebay.com/itm/130905669470...84.m1497.l2649
Bought "Car Gauge Pro" on Google App Store for $5.95.
Linked it with my Bluetooth on my Samsung Galaxy S4 w/ Jelly Bean 4.2.2.
Started the car and followed the pictures here: http://my6thgen.org/f107/how-advance...through-24679/

Success!
Obdlink Mx connected to my ecu and I advanced my baseline timing a total of 3 degrees using Android 4.4 nexus tablet and Car Gauge pro! Since black friday Obdlink Mx is selling for a more reasonable $99.99. IMO well worth it.
My 03 GLE was set at a -1 deg base and now saved at 2. The difference is VERY noticeable.
It is a pain how I received 2 bad elm327 version 1.5 clones. However I am happy to have a good reliable dongle now anyway. This mod is an a fantastic find for the money. I just wasn't going to break down and pay a dealer for this. Also the access to abs, bcm, enhanced pids, diagnostics, ect...!
Successfully did idle air relearn as well. Wasn't able to do it manually after installing intake spacers and now the idle seems better.
Not sure what the "self learn control" function even does but I did it
Any ideas?
Have to say so far car is running like a new machine.
Thanks for thread!

Crazy how we both got two defective ELM devices.
Timing advanced here as well. Good thread.
Just a V Gate for some basic info and code reading:

do i can play with advance timing with a ELM327? i need a better software?
thanks.
Edit: just re-read. Are you trying to do the above within the Car Gauge PRO application?

Just want to see who's had luck with ABS test. The information will be helpful to others in the future. Not sure if it is not working for all manual guys, or if it is working for all autos. This info will help me to consolidate information and potentially eliminate further questions regarding the topic in the future.
Please post whether it worked for you or not (yes/no), transmission (6mt/5mt/4at/5at), as well as year and model.
I'll start:
Yes/4at/02 GLE

Both have to be done with engine at operating temperature. Don't forget that idle air relearn should be done after all other relearn/resets. https://maxima.org/showthread.php?t=592891

I borrowed my friends adaptor, not sure all the details on it. Has the blue and orange sticker and some LED's. Anyways, it's finicky as hell with my OBD II port, either my port is poopy or the adaptor is. Anyways, I do have a 6 speed and have gone back and checked that my timing is changed a few times, it does stick for me
The power I get at 4k is ridiculous coupled with my spacers, the dyno graphs I've read say 12whp at 4100rpm for the timing advance and 12whp at 4400rpm for the spacers so once you get to 4k it can feel like hitting boost just a little bit

1/4 tank? I am in the the reserve tank ... 16 gal tank. How are you getting better mileage AND better performance?
That tank was 90% highway and I ***** foot it if I'm not sitting @ 60 mph on cruise control ..... I have had a tank like that in a whole tho.... I don't typically beat on my car... It's my DD so it must last.... But It is nice to know I got the power there if I need it.
Please do..... I'm thinking w/b & afc might be my new XT investment.... Just gotta do more research as to which to get... I don't know anything bout them really.
This is a new area for me as well. The wideband install is easy enough, but wiring the VAFC to the ecu has me a bit scared. But, I'm going to need to adjust AFR for my future mods. Although I've been reading that making the car richer (adding fuel) retards timing... Ehh, back to reading I go.
Hey guys, just got my ELM327 in the mail today. Was all pumped up to try it so I ran out and tried it, lol. At first I thought all was good, when I chose the "generic obd ll" one instead of the nissan one it worked fine with pairing with the bluetooth elm device, and it worked fine "connecting to the ecu." When I figured out (after reading this entire forum AGAIN) that you have to be in the "Nissan" one to get the advanced features, I tried that. Now here's the problem, it pairs fine with the bluetooth device, but once it tried to talk to my ecu, I get an error code. The code says, "An error has occurred in sub:java.lang.RuntimeException:Cannot parse: 94 as boolean Continue?" When I click Yes, it just keeps popping right back up and won't allow me to do anything else. When I click No, it kicks me completely out of the app. Just wondering if anyone had any ideas on what this could be and how to fix it. It just seems strange to me that it works fine on the generic obd ll function, but when I try the nissan one, it gives me this s***. All I wanted to do was increase my timing!!! Help please. Thanks guys.
