H&R Springs Setup Advice

Hello people,

I've been looking into some new suspension for my Max, for looks and ride quality. I'm on stock suspension which was changed out a few years back, and still riding fine.

From what I've read, the H&R springs have the quality and the level drop that I desire for my car, but I'm not sure about shocks. I've read that the stock shocks can handle the H&R springs without failing (at least not for a long time if they're newer), but if I want new shocks, it would be the best bang for my buck to get it all done at the same time.

When it comes to shocks, I want something that will work with the H&R, as well as give a good ride. My ideal ride is something stiffer than stock, but still dampened to be comfortable enough for a daily drive.

I plan to take the parts to my mechanic and have him install them, so if I get more than just the springs, I also need to be sure to give him any extra parts I may need. I know people have suggested getting new OEM dust covers, so I plan to get those.

Any shock suggestions/part suggestions for this set up? Seems like suspension questions have been on the rise lately. I just want to be sure I'm going to make a quality combination that will last a long time that I will enjoy.

Thanks for the help!

If you use the search function or look up in the gen 5 forum there is lots of info out there on spring and shock choices. Im new to the max world as well and for what ive been reading you are right on the h&r but the only thing i dont like is that they dont give a level drop. My max has new shocks and you can fit an entire shoe in the wheel well. I wanted the tein shocks to have a more level drop.

Well, the drop with the H&R springs isn't level, but it's close enough that I'm happy - and it's still better than stock.

The comparison on here was a great reference and helped me make the decision for the H&R.

Maybe my real question is whether or not I can get away with just using H&R springs on my stock struts and get away with it without failure, and still getting a bit firmer suspension without getting new shocks.

H&R arent to crazy of a drop, you should be fine with the shocks you have now. Theres people with s techs on stock springs lol but thats to low of a drop on springs and they blow their struts in a week. You should be fine

you may be fine for sometime, but its only going to decrease the life of them when compared to being on non lowering springs.

just don't be mad when you need struts sooner than normal.

I agree, and do you know how many miles or how long the current struts have been on?

I have H & R Springs and Tokico Illuminas. The drop is very livable and looks good. If you drop your car too much you may regret it.

Telling a mechanic how to do their job would be a big no no

The OP should read my thread, not their mechanic.

Literally every question posted here is answered in my thread.

OP - where are you located?

Tirerack sells the H&R's sport springs and they were designed to be fitted with Koni Sport Struts (Yellows)....German springs/German struts...These spring are the closest to Progress Technology's Sport Spring IMO...which are awesome spring that provide an awesome stance, good handling and an awesomely smooth ride when paired with good struts that can handle the increase spring rates over a longer period of time the Oem or GR-2's....My initial setup on Tokico Illuminas lasted for approx 100k before they started weakening!

my tokico illuminas lasted around 80k on H&R's and were shot by then (fronts) so maybe only lasted 70k.
