Cold start troubles
Cold start troubles
Hey, I'm new to the forums, I recently bought a 2001 Maxima SE 5speed with the VQ30DE and whenever I start the car when its been sitting overnight or cold it starts and dies right after. If I tap the gas pedal a little after starting it it'll run and idle normally.
I tried searching but couldn't find anything. I'm suspecting IACV or the fuel filter as I read from other members on here but the crazy thing is I have no SES light or anything; my car runs and drives super smooth. Any ideas?
Also, I'm not sure if the vq30's are just slow but is there anything I should do or look out for that would cause it to be slower than it should be or are these cars just not that fast. I'm planning on changing the spark plugs, air filter, tans fluid change etc. so any other maintenance suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks!

An old thread:
https://maxima.org/forums/5th-genera...dle-issue.html
That user ended up with two issues:
1. Bad IACV. If you change this part, do NOT forget get do the IACV bypass (search this forum for that). Should do IACV bypass now actually.
2. Bad ignition coils.
I'm not one for just replacing parts. I'd certainly look at the intake (remove, make sure clean, make sure butterfly valve open/closes properly). I'd do any tune-up items if you don't know the conditions (spark plugs, air filters, cracked vaccum lines).

somewhat related, i had an issue with the car dying on very hot days right after starting up
turned out the throttle body was dirty so a 7$ can of throttle cleaner and a roll of paper towels fixed that
It's best to completely remove the TB so you can easily clean it well and from both sides, if you just take the intake off, it's kind of a half-assed job and it's impossible to do properly
it could also be a dirty MAF so a 7$ bottle of MAF cleaner with 7-8x spray cycles could not hurt either, both inexpensive and kind of regular maintenance really.
while you're in there you will see the IACV passages, clean those well too
i personally don't recommend the IACV bypass, the IACV gasket replacement will prevent the failure if properly installed of course
it's also a 7$ part from Nissan (if you can find it)
