i have been researching, as some have stated above.. we can relocate the HVAC to the lower portion(the plastic trim), now i am not sure yet on what to put up there but i was thinking a LCD screen with RCA capabilities(since my HU has RCA Vid out so i could play movies and such up there..
i have the kenwood 9980HD installed and my top screen stopped working (the same as the other pic of the guys S model)...would love to have some sort of replacement for the top screen with climate control just some color @ least so it doesnt look stupid.
doesnt really bother me but it kinda does cause the time on the kenwood is small as **** unless i switch it to navi
i know there is a box you could buy to get words and the time back up on the top screen but im not gonna spend $150-200 just to put words and a clock there.
1x BlackBerry Playbook Mirror Screen Protector
1X small squeegee for tint install or some kind of hard plastic
1X phillips screw driver
An Idea I did for my 09 Maxima S W/ Atari Screen...... Take the shroud off that surrounds your info Display Screen.... Remove the plexiglass protecter with a phillips screwdriver and flip it over.... The top portion were your Radio Station display is surrounded by foam..... buy some black vinyl from ebay and try and find a sign shop or a friend that can do a cut out of MAXIMA ( Arial Black ) in the vinyl.... this is the more time consuming part... i suggest wet the vinyl and eye it up so those Dashes that are left on the Info Display cannot be seen and make your adjustments until top of letters are just below the dashes on the screen....get most of the major bubbles out and make sure you there isnt any lint or dirt on the screen..... Make sure its level and screw double check you can't see those dashes by placing the plexiglass up to Display unit..... After that is complete take out that Playbook Mirror Screen protecter and with that cleaning cloth that comes with the package make sure you remove any dirt, lint or finger prints from the front of the screen protector....your gonna have to trim the Mirror film so the screws and washer dont get caught up on the Mirror film when your reinstalling the Plexiglass....I think if you cut at a 45 degree angle and come down from the edges about an 1/2- 1 inch your good... ( Mirror film comes in packs of 2 most of the time so if you jack it up you have another one).... Also adjust the top and bottom part of the film so there is no overhang.....( you might have to trim slightly ) If there is over hang, during the summer months the heat in the car get under film and it slightly lifts it..... So trimming it avoids this BS...... reinstall shroud and pat yourself on the back.... Looks pretty dope MHO... If you do this let me know..... a 20 dollar project and a 6 pack of beer goes a LONG WAY!!
As for the Materials needs the Black Vinyl will obviously cover up any excess light from the top portion of the screen.... and only light that comes out is to display '' MAXIMA''
The Mirror Screen Protect helps in several ways
Covers up any slight blemishes of installing the vinyl letter backing
Serves as a Mirror cover for the whole screen
when you turn on A/C and Heater you can easy see the Temperature display through the screen when on and when off it looks like a mirror during the day.... at night your see the Logo and change the intensity of light with dial sticking out of your cluster
At night it look pretty dope too!!
One more thing..... If you happen to disconnect the plugs from the back of the shroud .... and if you get '' Service Engine Soon'' or something like that AFTER you plug them back in, Disconnect Negative Battery terminal and wait like 3 minutes and reconnect.... that will reset that BS.... Dont go to the Dealership cause its pointless and they'll prob charge you!
Thanks Guys.... Pretty much just a Mirror..... You can't see anything behind it until you put on your AC/heater control...and during the day '' MAXIMA '' is slightly seen in the back round.....If you use 3M, I'm assuming you can peel the vinyl off if you ever decide to sell or trade your Max... That space is about 2x5 inches give or take.

You think the screen could be cut and keep only the lower section with the temp info.?
JustDave...nice work...Do you happen to be located near NYC? I have a Kenwood DNX 9140 and would love to get this exact setup as well.
I'm actually in Nutley/Clifton area... I have a newborn baby to take care of and going overseas VERY soon.. I dont have time to get out and do anything man...... Sorry about that....... For real though... its a straight forward "mod" the only time consuming part is lining the Decal up so you dont see those dashes on the screen.

If you take that OEM plexiglass off you will see there are actually 2 displays.... Top display shows your radio channel and function display on the top and then there is the second display on the bottom which displays your heater controls... I'm pretty sure you can remove the top display were the Radio Station and other stuff is displayed but theres no cutting involved.
What was your idea on cutting it??... I see on ebay you can get a OEM info display screen for 140 shipped... maybe buy one from there and customize ebay one and swap out whenever you trade or sell ride??... When it comes to my car I'm ALWAYS brainstorming

Right now I am thinking of placing it in the lower section below the radio and adding a 7" screen up top, video fed by your head unit?

Dude you already know! lol....extending the heater controls and and flush mount to that small rectangular piece underneather double din.... 7 inch up top... That small plastic is 50 bucks (wtf) to replace from courtesy Nissan... and I been waiting for a good deal on ebay for a used Atari screen ( the cheapest 140)... Use the display off ebay unit and flush mount to plastic... and take take out top display out and use that exsisting base to mount your 7 inch in... since its oem the LCD with be flush mounted with the Plastic shroud once you reinstall everything.... run movies or whatever to top screen and your Navigation and functions will be controlled from your head unit.... I would def look dope
The 7"-er that was used by that other guy with the S retails for under a $100 and he said the existing bracket works nice with it. So you have had this plan all along and was going break it out soon! I havent been behind my dispay yet so I am still far from fine tuning my plan.
Ttt.... Anyone swapped the amber stuff to the bottom and put in a tv/radio on the top yet?
I just changed the amber LED's to white for temp controls and it looks great.... and I'm routing the temp display underneath my double din.... Already cut out and mocked up... I just have do some final touches..... And yes I know this is an Old *** thread

PLCC-4 SMD's roughly 3mm LED's 3.5 x 2.8 The ebayer in the listing I posted is in the states and pretty much everyone else is in China. Took me about an hour to swap out the 10 LED's. And FYI I took apart the climate control mechanism to actually turn on AC and Heat and those LED's are like the size of a half a grain of rice and good luck with anyone trying to accomplish that. The unit above heater controls that is blank, that has the dashes across the screen can't be separated cause the board is soldered down by 100-150 small contacts and I'm sure it can be done but I'm not a soldering guru but good luck with that. That little annoying orange courtesy light in your overhead sunglasses holder can be swapped out and that's a 5mm thru- hole led with 2 contact points. Looks pretty easy after prying open the housing but I need to buy an led.
I'm looking at doing the same thing except on an 04. I was able to get a entire unit including plugs from wreck I found a link on the NICO site that had some basic instructions. If anyone has any advice please share. I will update my progress
I was looking on ebay to replace the screen, cd player/radio controls, a/ccontrols with the non nav version - this way I can install my own screen, but it doesn't look like it will work if I don't replace the entire harness, which i'm not planning on doing. @Jim9312 if you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for the unit and wiring?
I picked the unit up for 60.00 at Junkyard. U-Part It in Columbus, Ohio. I had to remove myself which was fine as I was able to get the wiring that plugs into the back. I'm pretty much going to see if it will be an easy task. If I have to start cutting and splicing a bunch of wires I probably won't go too much further
I know this thread is old, just wanted to share.I swapped out my Bose with monochrome screen for the full navigation unit.got the display, nav radio and all the wires were cut long at the junkyard and just cut and spliced all of the wires to the corresponding wires using the service manual provided by nicoclub.everything works except can’t get the aftermarket camera I already had to work with the oem one.

So I can buy the navigation with Bluetooth and just switch mine out? Mine doesn't have Bluetooth in it or navigation
If this is something you guys are still interested in please let me know.
I'm a product developer that's put together plug-n-play conversion kits for other vehicles (such as the Murano and G37 cars). So if this is something you'd like to see, feel free to comment here or reach out via PM.
Kit Example for the Murano. If developed, it could be similar for the Maxima:
I’m sure the wiring schematics between the murano and maxima are different.you would have to go to the service manual and do a lot of research.it’s a lot of work involved.I only did it because I had a lot of time on my hands one weekend and I had the oem system so I just went ahead to try it and everything worked.but like I said it’s a lot of wiring.
