FWD with good winter tires like Blizzacks, and LSD standard, as Nissan used to do in Canada can be fine so long as it isn't too hilly. I've visited Toronto and Ottawa. Of course that doesn't represent all of Canada, but those areas are quite flat.

Mountainous regions that experience harsh winters would be a region where I would think an AWD vehicle like a Subaru would be a requirement rather than an option.

Yeah I'm just saying for the price of a Maxima here in Canada you have way better choices.

Such as? The Maxima is pretty good bang for buck up here, although Canadian resale value is messed up.

Where have you seen a new 7th gen MSRP for anywhere close to $25k, anywhere in the USA?

It's more like $30k msrp for a base Maxima S, bare bones. 40k fully loaded.

Base MSRP in USD is $31290 for a basic Maxima...which is "$30k+" USD. Now with discounts...different story...but it was stated "MSRP is $30k+ CAD compared to mid $25k USD"

Good luck getting discounts on the Maxima in the GTA region. Brand new most places want $35-45k CAD, the Altima 3.5 are in the high 20 - mid $30 range CAD

For $35-45k you can get a car which may come with AWD, RWD, more electronic toys, better fuel mileage etc

Not entirely. But there are three possible problems. Will there be a NISMO version? If so, the Nismo version still may not be available until well after the 8th gen has been on dealer lots, and I tend to buy fairly soon after a new generation is released. More problematic is the fact the 7th gen Maxima had the lowest ground clearance of any Maxima generation ever built (4.5 inches), the 8th gen will probably be as low, and AWD, even if the AWD version is raised slightly, won't be the cureall for a vehicle with relatively low ground clearance in snow.

Thankfully, I won't have to worry about snow here in middle Georgia.

That was Atlanta, where folks were stuck on the freeways for days. Total gridlock. Never have so many folks gone to the bathroom beside their car on an urban freeway, in front of so many thousands of viewers. It was all rather unbelievable.

I could tell you sad things like arriving home from work at 10PM (left the office at 5PM) with one shoe missing, both feet near frostbite, and cakes of frozen tears on my cheeks. But I don't even want to think back to those terrible days.

Now that I have retired, my wife and I avoid going out during snowstorms or ice storms. We have enough food in the house to survive for several months. Our power was off several days during that last ice storm, and it got very cold inside, but we have lots of blankets.

EDIT - - - And when we do go out after the storm is over, if there is ice or snow on the road, we always take the Maxima, because my wife's trucks are all RWD, and with the weight of the motor over the front wheels, they do not do well on ice or snow. Carefully driven, the Maxima is fine on ice or snow, as long as the roads are fairly level.

For anyone who cares. Went to the Washington Auto Show last night with another .orger and checked out bunch of stuff.

Nissan rep confirmed the 8th gen is good to go at the NY Auto show, he said touchdown is coming. Just a confirmation that it's almost here and gonna be on sale soon this year! Anyone out in NYC, the 8th gen is definitely confirmed for the auto show so you guys need to go and send us mad pics

Also, not confirmed but pretty much guaranteed is that the 8th gen will have 300 horses at the least.

Thanks for the update DS. It would be good if the tri-state (CT, NY, NJ) members organized a meet there at Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on the first weekend.

I may be in NYC around late-Feb but too early for the show.

Last year's autoshow gave me great hope for Nissan, that is was going to return to it's performance minded history (iDX, sports sedan concept, mercedes 3.0TT powerplant, blade glider, etc). It seems they've recanted in the past year and are again pushing volume cars.

I have hope for a true automatic or 3.0 TT (or a RWD- yeah right)version of the Maxima sold as a NISMO- but not sure that'll happen. The CVT is a deal breaker for me- even with the stunning good looks of the 8th gen.

Although all the laws of physics tell us the CVT is a more efficient tranny than manuals and automatics, I was still not sure the CVT was ready for production when it became the only Maxima tranny in 2006. I was right. The 2006 thru 2008 Maxima CVT was not quite ready.

But the 7th gen CVT was much better. Still dampened a bit off the line (via software), but worked well. Many of us who grew up in the days of manuals miss the manual, but I finally grew tired of shifting for over an hour in stop and go traffic at 10 to 20 MPH every morning and every evening. In 1984, I traded my 5 speed manual Datsun in on two 1985 Maximas with automatics and never looked back. And I have gradually grown to love my CVT driven Maxima. Just took me awhile to make a complete adjustment of how to drive the CVT.

Of course the CVT would not have taken over in so many vehicles had the government not raised fuel efficiency requirements, and the CVT is the most fuel efficient tranny. Plus, the CVT is much smaller and lighter than these newfangled 7, 8, and 9 speed automatics, adding even more efficiency.

As for RWD, I knew back in 1984 that I was finished with RWD. FWD works so much better for a family sedan, even one with a slightly sporty edge. RWD is worthless on ice or snow, and not as safe on wet pavement. FWD is not as good at the track or for 'drifting', but the Maxima is neither a track car nor a race car. Nissan makes Infinitis for those who have not yet made the move to FWD.

I will add that, unless the CVT on the 8th gen eliminates the software damping at takeoff, then we will indeed have an undesirable situation. 'Damping' and 'Maxima' should never need to be used in the same sentence.

Nissan will have a 90 second commercial during the Super Bowl plus
You'll also see two surprise products that will make cameo appearances in the full 90 second commercial. Could we see a glimpse - of the 8th Generation Maxima ? I'll be watching !

My max did so well last year in that storm, i was quite impressed. Being the first time I've ever driven it in the snow i didn't know to expect from her. The maxima is always exceeding my expectations

I like it! Not in that color, but overall I like it! One odd thing, at the end, on the back of the car, on the right side trunk, there is a word, and I can't figure out what it says! I hoping it says NISMO.

Cant say im impressed with this one unfortunatly. It appears nissan just wont give up their big booty fetish and couldnt resist giving the new maxima an even bigger rear end than the last.

However, the fact that they were stressing throughout the whole commercial the racecar/nismo genes the maxima has (should have?), nissan could be hinting at a nismo edition.

The wait continues.
