6x9s in an enclosure...?

Hey guys, i saw this civic hatchback today and the guy had his 6/9's mounted in a ported enclosure. It sounded very good for some bestbuy rockford fostgate speakers. So i was wondering would there be eny benefit by putting 6x9's in an enclosure, and then running the ports through the back dash into the cabin. Do you think it would improve the sound, how would you figure out what size box you would need to make. And in general do people put mid drivers into enclosures or not? Does the volume of the enclosure matter? Any info would be apreciated. Thanks.

the guy probably has no subs, so i guess he wanted just a little mid bass with the box, if you have good quality 6x9s u dont need a box

usually people do it just because they cant fit them anywhere else.. i used to have a civic and it had stock 6x9's, so i replaced them easily... that or he just wanted more speakers
