Subwoofer went out.

Subwoofer went out.
Hey guys, I need your help.
I was pumping my music really loud a couple of nights ago and the bass just went kaput. I'm not sure if my subwoofer went bad or if my amp went bad. When I play music now, sometimes the bass will come on just for a couple of seconds and then stops.
Any idea as to what happened? Anything that I can do to test to see what happened?
Your help as always is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Scott

I opened up the box and check to make sure that the connections were secure and they were (meaning, the wires connecting the subwoofer to the box). I checked my the speaker wires connected to the amp and they were secure. The only thing that I did not check was the PAC adaptor. I want to see if there is anything else I can check before taking the dash apart again. If there are no more suggestions then I guess I'm going to have to take the dash apart and check the RCA connections. I hope that I did not blow my sub or amp. I only set the gain to about 75% and the bass boost to about 15%, plus the I'm pretty sure the 12" L7 can handle more power that I am pushing to it with the Kicker 600W amp.
Thanks again for your help!

Actually, the bass has completely stopped now. I don't hear anything coming from the subwoofer.
I double check my connections tomorrow and let you guys know. I'll try disconnecting the speaker wires completely and then I will try to rewire them again.
Will let you guys know what happened when I find out.

+1 on whether or not the amp is going into protect mode?
Do you have a multimeter to test the sub? Could be that the sub is fried and if you hit a bump while driving the sub jump starts and plays shortly since the resistance changes. Could also be as simple as a fuse thats almost blown, but makes contact every once in a while.

about the fuse
had a similar situation where the sub would cut in and out at random, and the fuse looked fine. but when i took the fuse out, one of the end caps came off completely. so it was a faulty fuse...changed it, no more problems afterwards.

Go with what these guys said but also check amp side of the ground and chassis side of ground, remote wires, connections behind the HU, and connections at the battery. Also I would consider re-tuning the amp a bit, that gain is set pretty high, I a$$ume your also utilizing a remote gain/bass control.

Thanks guys for all the great suggestions. I will definitely check the fuses. And yes I do have a remote gain which is also at 75 - 80%.
Another question, how do I know if the amp is in protect mode?
Thanks again.

Hey guys. I took a look at the amp and the protection mode light was not on. So, I guess that it did not go into protection mode, right? Anyways, the amp seems fine, I'm guessing right now that my sub has blown. I am going to try to connect it to another subwoofer to see if it is in fact the subwoofer. Will keep you guys updated on the situation. It really sucks that I am stuck with the factory bass. It was such a HUGE difference.

Hey guys, thanks again for your help. I just finally found the time to fix the problem. It seems like the problem came from the wiring inside the box.
The first thing I did was change the speaker wire that connected the amp to the box and that did not fix it.
The next thing I did was take out the subwoofer from the box and rewire everything with new wires and now it works. I guess, something must of came loose or a wire went bad (not sure if wires can go bad).
Anyways, I'm glad that I didn't need to take apart the dash to fix the problem. That would of been time consuming.
Thanks again guys for your help. I am so... glad to have my bass back. The factory bass just doesn't sound as good.

The weather is the primary reason I'm not working on many cars.
A meter is your friend, everyone with anything more than a somewhat standard system should have one, or at least access to one for troubleshooting.
