IMHO it doesn't matter how much money one earns, things have to be relative. When fuel goes up $1/gal. in a week or so, I can assure you that single people with high incomes feel it. We paid about $5,30/gal. CDN on Mon., and over the weekend saw the prices rise 10 cents/liter in 2 days.
You shoulda seen this Shell station in NJ on Mon. night. They were selling gas for $3.059, and there was mass chaos in their lot, cars facing all directions and lined-up onto Rt. 1. I saw a Lexus and S500 bang hard u-turns to get to the station as super was going for 3.27, lower than the avg. regular price at other stations. To the contrary of the CNN report 1 1/2 mos. ago, $3 is enough to get people to act differently.

This is the exchange rate as of Wednesday, September 7, 2005:
1 British Pound (£) = $1.83640
In other words, 3.76 x 1.8364 = $6.90/gallon!

You can put in about 60 litres when the idiot light comes on and that is still almost $75.

Gas prices will ease, maybe in 14-20 days. You can bet on it. The difference between wholesale and retail has grown to over $1, and that means what? You guessed it, pure profit. What is happening is the oil cos. are limiting the allocation to the dealers, in an attempt to maintain $3/gal. It cannot be sustained. Can $2.50 be sustained? Yes.
It's like running a buffet with king crab legs and little neck clams, and charging $6.95 all-you-can-eat. How do they do it when the little necks are $5-6/dozen. Do you think the buffet is going out-of-business?
I am rather impressed how the typical retail owner (gas) has learned their economic lesson over the last year. The shrewd shyster has priced their motor fuel to the point where they nearly run-out before the next delivery, i.e. maximizing revenue.
You can quote me--14-20 days from now gasoline will be cheaper than it is today. But I wont quit my day job or sell my oil driller stock!

1 US Dollar = 1.18870 Canadian Dollar
1 Canadian Dollar (CAD) = 0.84126 US Dollar (USD)
$1.10 x 0.84126 = $0.925386/liter x 3.76 = $3.49/US gallon.

I don't know about you, but fuel costs are a significant cost of ownership. Those numbers above are not pocket change. I suspect that a majority of us here on the org bought used, so the average price paid is significantely less than $24,000. If I buy a used one for $12,000 and put 100,000 miles on it @$3/gal I just paid for it twice.

Ethanol! It counts for a small, but larger than I thought, part of the fuel consumption in the USA. Corn and certain grains have been a good ethanol cash crop for farmers, particularly in certain states. Now, it is expanding into places that may have problems producing things for human consumption, but can produce crops that can be made into ethanol. There is an ethanol plant going in the state now. E10 can be run by most cars, but you would need an FFV to run E85. However remember that even as ethanol is cheap, my research indicates that you get less mileage compared to regular gas. The problem is that Ethanol contains less energy per unit than gas, so you will burn more of it for the same distance. However, since E85 would be much less than gas, you could still come out ahead.
