Hey all,
I'm relatively new here. Bought my 2k2 about 8 months ago. Had 118k miles on it. I have no idea how it was treated prior to my ownership, however, all oil changes and normal maintenance looks like it was taken care of properly.

Long story short, I'm looking for some things that I can do to help prolong the life of my car and increases it's performance. I'm in a semi-strict budget and am not all confident in my abilities to do most of the work myself. Any tips on things I can do to increase performance / hp / longevity would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Long-Time Reader, First-Time Poster...

Hey Hi Howdy, How's Everybody Doin'

I fell in love with Maxima's driving my Mother's '99 automatic back when it was brandy-new and ever since have been browsing these forums every once in a while to keep my interest fresh...
I've had pretty good luck through college and the years following; All the cars I've ever owned bit the dust with over 300k miles ('95 Corolla, Civic and Jetta and '92 Escort) but I've been working at a friend's dealership for a few months (and finally have money) and I picked up an automatic, dark gray '02 Maxima GLE with 156k miles.

It's wicked clean and I have the resources to make it a nice whip, I wanna give it to my girl for her birthday, you think I'll have the same luck? lol

I'm going to be more active on here now, but any helpful starting points?

The low price is what sold me on this one, but in the future I was thinking about getting an '03 or looking at some Infinity's, but regardless of make, I need a manual transmission. The automatic 3.5 definately has some power, but I miss the 5-speed (and 6-speed just sounds delightful)

hey maxima org suspension gurus, need some advise on suspension issue. had purchased tokico illumina shocks for my vogtland springs on my 03 maxima. went the lazy way and had my mechanic install them.

fronts were fine, but when they got to the rear, the springs wouldn't fit, there was a small gap/play with the rear vogtland in the illuminas??? so mechanic put back the oem's with illuminas.

has anyone ever experienced this before? i had thought there was a thread somewhere, but after several hours of seaching this forum, couldn't find it.

thanks

Im hoping im posting this in the right thread so dont chew me out too hard if it isn't.

I recently bought a 35w 6000k h3 conversion kit from ddm tuning for the ebay halo projectors on my 2001 max. Maybe im just being an hid newbie, but they look closer 5000k to me. Here's a link to the pic:

Sorry if the quality isnt too fantastic.

What do you guys think?

This happens sometimes with a clutch job. The crankshaft position sensor needs to be removed again and the mounting surfaces of the sensor and the bell housing have to be cleaned real good.

This is interesting. Did both of these problems start at the same time? Do you lose the station pre-sets in the radio? Does the radio keep playing when the screen dims? The screen display is strictly internal to the radio, there isn't any wire in the harness to control that.

Under the hood attached to the firewall between the power brake and the car's center is a silver metal plate. On this plate is an 18 character ID number, right below the VIN number.

The 6th character (if there are any dashes, count it as a character) is what you want to look at.

When you say "wouldn't fit" - it implies they were too big.
When you say there was a "gap/play", it implies the springs were too small.

Which is it? Either way, I've never heard of this issue.

...but then again, Vogtland springs aren't exactly the highest recommended springs by consensus.

so when the rear spring was sitting on the rear shock/strut perch, the top hat couldn't be threaded down tight enough to eliminate the play btwn top hat and top of spring. not enough thread? so the bolt couldn't go down far enough.

i recall reading a thread about this issue on this forum somewhere so i tried placing this question in the suspension thread, but someone or something keeps moving it back here. I don't think 'hi my name is....' thread might be the best place to ask this question, but what do i know...

thanks for your input djfrestyl.

That's new information to me - I've never installed Vogtlands. Just another reason not to

Even with the lowest springs (Tein S-Tech), the spring is tall enough to make contact with both the upper and lower perch.

Honestly, get a better spring.

Cool thanks, do they come as one part or two, and how can I tell if I need to replace one or both if they are separate?

Its one whole assembly, but the names are used interchangeably because its 2 components to make up that one assembly.

I think your radio has a problem. Since the radio will stay playing, it is not a power-to-the-radio problem. When you consider that the display is controlled by the radio itself internally, the problem is internal.

The seatbelt light thing is more difficult to figure out. It could be a problem with the switch inside the buckle. Try wiggling the shoulder harness tab around while you have the seatbelt buckled up and see if the light comes on.

thanks for the advise, but the Vogtlands are great. they are not a cheap company, they make the oem springs for many german and other auto companies.

how could they fit the oem rear shocks and not the illuminas rears? doesn't make sense.

Is it true that UpRev Cipher does not support 2003 Maxima?

I called UpRev and they said it would not because it's an older style ECU. I'm confused because I saw a thread on here somewhere with someone offering to advance timing using Cipher.

Please help...No point dumping $200 if it wont work.

5th Gen no start

Hello all, I hate to introduce myself in a needy manner. I have done a lot with nissans in the past. I had an s13 that had swapped a ca18det into, and i currently own another s13 that i just swapped an sr20det into, the car is a suspension monster and very fun haha. Just letting you guys know I am mechanically proficient, I just need a hand. My mother is on disability and not rich, and her husbands a truck driver. I live 40 minutes away. I have to get her car up and running again ASAP.

my mother owns a 2002 maxima, which she takes great pride in.
the car has 130k on the clock.

she called me the other day, 30 miles out of town and told me her car was acting funny, which i assumed to be a misfire.

The car made it home, i took it to advance to read codes. two for a misfire, knock sensor, and two for power steering issues.

Misfire, I assume its time to change the plugs, and while doing so I encountered the notorious cylinder 5 valve cover leak.
I replaced the valve cover, intake plenum gasket, and all spark plugs from nissan, so its all legit stuff.

The car will not start now, and emits whitish, maybe blueish smoke.
I just tested each coilpack individually and they all work.

I went to test for ECU codes (like i would on my sr20) to find there is no diagnostic system on this ecu.

the fuel pump is priming, the motor turns over, and im getting spark i assume (all coilpacks fired the test plug)

Im at a loss, because I am not familiar with the sensors on the vq35, normally I would suspect my Cam angle sensor on my sr20.

someone please tell me whats left. it has to be sensor related seeing as i have everything needed to start the engine.

thanks all.

It could be the cam sensor or either of the 2 crank sensors.

After taking the pan out and checking the fluid I noticed that the transmission had cracks where the pan was so I knew it needed to be replaced asap. I replaced the trans on sunday and and drove out of town. It did fine going, but when I came back I clearly notice I am still having the same issues .... The transmission simply took me from 80 to 60 mph. When starting out the trans will only let me do up to 20 mph.

What is happening:
- The transmission will not shift into gear
- It goes into first but will not go into second or third
-The transmission will be fine for a little while like after sitting for a couple of hours but it seems like when it warms up it acts up again.

Question: Could my problem be the transmission control module or the speed sensor? Should the TCM be reset?

I am going to search more but this its serious cause I am supposed to be moving to finish school and the school its in an area where I am going to be relying soley on maxine for transportation.
?? Should I just take it to nissan??

i thought likewise.

when i was testing the coil packs the spark was not really in any pattern, and i really expected more sparking.

cranking for 5 seconds or so i only got no more than two sparks.
how frequent should i see spark, or should i see more sparks in that time period?

cam angle sensor is for spark timing, correct?

can i please have a thread mods?

If its a sensor it should be throwing a code. There is a recall on the 2002 for the sensors.

TSB- NTB03-124
http://maxima.theowensfamily.com/tsb...=2002&tsb=none

The cover page gives the serial number range, but you call a dealer and see if it applies to your car and whether it has been done.

I seriously doubt it. A catalytic converter would have to be plugged pretty solid to keep the car from starting. It would have had to plug up on you in a couple of seconds.

Radiator replacement

  1. Can someone point me in the right direction on a radiator replacement "how to" for a 2002 nissan maxima?
  2. What do they call the top two bushings that hold the radiator in place?
  3. What materials will I need?
  4. What should I look for while doing the replacement?
  5. Does anyone know where I can DL a repair manual for 2002?
Thanks

Whistle at ~1800 rpm

I have a 2000 max and it has around 130k miles on it. I just started to notice this loud, high pitched whistle noise while driving right when the car hits around 1800 rpm then it goes away. It does not do it while in neutral, only in drive. I'm thinking it could be something tranny related. Any help?
