Pre Cat Delete

I have an 02 Maxima with a bad precat. I saw somewhere that you could delete it by getting some headers for the car. Is this true? If not how would i go about doing this?

Yes if you go with headers and replace the Y pipe you will have eliminated the the pre cats .. you have to also replace the Y pipe as the headers will not match up with the stock y pipe

K thanks for reply. Could you recommend any website to get these things from and would it matter what y pipe i got with the headers? Or do all of them pretty much go with whatever? Sorry but im kinda new at modding lol.

you can get OBX or Cattman Headers/Y pipe. OBX can be found in numerous places- just google it(can be had for under 400), good headers but not as nice as Cattman in regards to fit and finish but they are half the price of Cattman(700+ shipped).

Cattman- you will have to call Brian, (really good and informative guy-makes the best exhaust for the Maxima) because they are odd in not having a current and functioning website. I know if he updated that site he would get a few more sales a month easy.

Both header set ups should squeeze out an extra 20 or so HP and give a deeper more robust exhaust note. Be prepared that the installation can be time consuming and/or expensive (6-8 hrs on average).

a/c clutch interchangeability?

I have a 2000 Max that is making noise in the a/c clutch assembly so I want to replace it. The problem I'm having is find just the clutch assembly so I was going to just buy a used compressor and swap the parts. The problem I'm having is that the prices for 2000-01 compressors are very high while 99's down and 02's up are lower priced.

My question is, Will the clutch assemblies from any of these other years interchange with the 2000-01's?

Yea ill prolly go with the obx since its half the price and i found a diy guide for it too. But hopefully its not too hard for me to pull off. Thanks for the info dude.

O and 1 more thing. How much of a sound difference will this make? I dont want the cheap honda tuner sound like i heard others say. And the only ones i heard on youtube had catback exhausts plus the y pipes/headers, none with juss y pipe/headers. And hows cabin noise? Just need a heads up before i put money on this and the person im doin it for complains.

My 2002 Maxima SE seems to have problems fogging up whenever it is raining. If it is raining out and I'm driving, the windshield will slowly fog up unless I have the front defrost on. I've changed the in cabin microfilter and cleaned my windows but it still seems to be doing it. Anyone have any idea what could be causing it?

Bank 2 (front) pre-cat question

I have the famous P0430 (bank 2 cat converter efficiency error) and have concluded from all that I've read that the front after pre-cat sensor probably isn't kidding (or malfunctioning), I need a new bank 2/front pre cat.

I have nothing stamped on my door that says Cali, nor to my knowledge has the car ever been anywhere but Virginia. Still what to buy as the front pre cat is pretty confusing.

All of the front piece only (single elbow) pre-cats seem to be designated for the california emmissions. Only Catco appears to sell a "federal" precat, and it is the whole shooting match coming off both front and back.

However, when I get under my car, I did a bolt on front precat (5 bolts on top, 3 on the bottom with the red wire 02 sensor plugged into the slug that is sending out the P0430.

Why can't I use an (Eastern, or other) Cali spec front pre-cat on my car? Has anyone who doesn't have a specifically designated Cali-emissions used these with success.

The Cali emissions seem to differ further down stream than this. Anyway, if someone could help me out - I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks.

Also new

Just purchased a '02 maxima se with 6 spd. Looking for websites for ordering new parts on line at best discount prices. If any sites have the diagrams of the parts would be as big help. Please notify, and appreciate any/all responses.

I had the oil changed at a Jiffy Lube (about 2K miles ago) and lately I've noticed the oil light gives a quick flicker and I hear a little rattle when I start the car. I remember issues with other manufacturers where the OEM oil filter had a check valve in it but the aftermarket ones did not. The check valve kept oil from draining back when the engine was off. Am I dealing with a similar situation here or do I need to look elsewhere.

Is it true that headers/y pipes from 95- 03 are all the same?

I have a stock 2000 Nissan Maxim SE with the OEM rims which are 17"s. I currently have 225/50/17's on them, I was wondering if 235/45/17's will fit?????????? Why or why not?

Thanks in advance!!!

Better yet:
What are all the possible tire sizes that will fit on a 2000 Nissan Maxima SE with the stock/oem 17" rims?? Currently have 225/50/17's.

IVE SEARCHED, NOTHING CONCLUSIVE YET!!!

After the 1/4 mile the engine went back to normal and SEL light stopped and has stayed off since. From what I've seen on the internet and on this forum a flashing SEL means bad ignition coils.

Would a bad ignition coil go in and out? I always thought that it one was bad it was bad.
Hex key to take off engine cover
10mm socket with extention to undo the bolts holding the each coil
plug socket with extention.
Thats it!

I replaced all mine. My SES light was doing the same (it would come on and go off. It would flash at me when I got on it hard when the SES light was on. All kinds of weird stuff.

Have been lurking and searching. Have fixed most of the problems with some help from here. 1 is still giving me trouble. Its the passenger side clunk over bumps. Have replaced all 4 struts and strut mounts. Replaced sway bar end links and bushings and alignment. Clunk is still there. The guy that did all the work comes with a good rep for his work. He and I checked motor mounts and they look good. Any Ideas??

^^ Just because they look good doesn't mean they are. Pretty common, new transverse mount fixes it right up.

Thanks for the reply. The mounts are all thats left, and I have read that alot replaced them. Also ran into a guy selling subframe collars in the classifieds. Think these would help on a stock ride?

Ya sure, subframe collars make a nice difference in the ride, doesn't matter if you're stock.

you can always check junk yards, they usually sell unnecessary tires, even on rims, prices won't be that bad either. Here in NY they go for 35-50 a piece, but sometimes even stores ask for 75 (I asked why and they said - it's 17'', no difference for width, just 17''...)

225/45/17s will look a touch small with a stock suspension.

Another noob question....

Can someone tell me what the issues are when buying an aftermarket precat for a cali emissions vehicle? I am not in CA anymore and want to get rid of a 0430 code.

Just got confused by a salesperson who said there are different parts for the CA pre-cat and what they sell wouldn't pass. He may actually have said they don't fit either which...

Thanks.

VIAS SOLENOID CONTROL VALVE

That's the correct part number...I went to the dealership to get my car repaired for this exact same problem and that's is the part and part number they used!

Hi everybody..

I have a question regarding a 2003 Maxima GLE I recently acquired. It has a bose system and built in navigation with controls on the steering wheel, but I would like to replace the stereo only to one that is ipod compatible. I was wondering if changing the stereo would affect the navigation and the steering controls or anything else other than the unit i am replacing.

Thanks, and cool site.

OEM navi is tied to the HVAC controls. It CANNOT be easily replaced with an aftermarket radio unit.

Your only option is an aux interface kit or FM modulator.

Thanks djfrestyl for the quick reply.

That's what i was afraid of, any recommendations on the interface kit? the fm modulator is out of the question.

EDIT: I found this on icarkits http://www.icarkits.com/cars/NISSAN_...003/PODNISV215 is that worth a try?

Got a Problem... Driving a 2003 maxima SE

Lately my cars being idleing pretty bad for the last couple of months, only when its cold, runs great when the engines warm no complaints. It will also stall some times(when engines cold), usually when I have it in drive and come to a stop.
Anyways for the longest time I wasn't getting any engine codes, but last weekend I get P0113(Intake Air Temperature Sensor), P0152(O2 bank 2, sensor 1), P0138(O2 Bank 1 sensor 2). Would these codes affect the idle?

Not to mention 2 days ago my exhaust cracked(I saw this coming, did a temp fix but it was -25 C outside, so it wasn't the greatest), right behind the rear passenger wheel. The exhaust line broke, so I'll fix that this weekend, since its going to be warm. Is this a coincidence or could the codes have been triggered by the exhaust brake(O2's maybe, but P0113)?

I've had good luck with the USA-Spec and PAC products. Never used the one above. Price on yours is a bit high.

One way to find out, fix your exhaust and replace the O2's. Or fix the exhaust and drive it for a few days and see if you still get O2 codes.

2002 Maxima GLE Auto, Same Problem here

I have the exact same problem! I have taken the car to a mechanic and he told me that it was the front struts, but I kind of dont believe him only because I dont bounce around on the street or highway. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isnt that how you can tell if your struts are bad?

I have also pushed on each strut putting my weight on the car and making it bounce, it does not bounce more than 1.5 times after I stop putting force to it. That's normal correct?

Anyways, my problem is exactly as hillbilly4u. I have a clunk in the front passenger side when I drive over bumps and cracks on the road. It is also a little noticable on the driver side too, but really noticable on the passenger side. I really want to narrow it down and order the correct parts for replacement.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Have replaced all 4 struts and strut mounts. Replaced sway bar end links and bushings and alignment. Clunk is still there. The guy that did all the work comes with a good rep for his work. He and I checked motor mounts and they look good. Any Ideas??
