Its not the shift trim that is the problem its the light gray cover where the gear positions are illuminated.

Sorry my comp has been f'd up. I was getting that number at fill up. It's been 4 mpg lower the last three fill ups, both by hand calculations and on the DIC.

Yes, it is your valve cover gaskets, I just had the same problem with mine. For me it was the back bank of cylinders, all the way on the right. Pull that coil out and it will be flooded with oil. But check all of them it may not be the same on yours. If this is the case you will need valve cover gaskets. I just cleaned the oil out and notice a very significant improvement in my power, but as soon as it all leaks back in there I will have no power again.

The valve cover gaskets have absolutely nothing to do with oil getting in the spark plug tubes.

2000 Maxima black emission coming from exhaust

Ok guys here is my deal I own a 2000 maxima gle and I have had nothing but problems with it. When I run the car on the highway with the air on and I accelerate there is alot of black smoke coming from the exhaust what could be causing this also sometimes if you rev the car in park it will just die. I have changed the coils and maf sensor what else could it be? Any info is greatly appreciated!

I've read about plenty of people using the precats made by Eastern Catalytic, Bosal and another brand I can't recall right now, as good replacements.

hey Guys..... new to the Maxima world and coming from the Contour SVT & Marauder world.
Really liked the SVT's (had 3 of them) but after the problematic last one, I decided to look somewhere else.
I looked at A4's, 528i's then on Autotrader, my eyes laid upon a 2002 Max.
It was at Premier Toyota in Northern Ohio (I'm in Detroit).
The car was already lowered, with a CAI and a fart can in the back.....(that doesn't sound too bad).

Anyway, this thing blows the SVT completely away! Everyone comments on the car.
Unfortunately, I've seen only one (white) 02 Max (lowered) with any mods.

I really don't have a question.....

to the guys that asked about oilpan scrapage, so far I have nothing even close and I am about 1.5" down.

Welcome! Yes, the Max and our VQ motors are leaps and bounds above a Contour.

Could be a number of things:

1. Bad Throttle sensor
2. Engine coolant temp sensor
3. clogged air filter.

I had good success with Eastern pre-cats. I think I paid about $150-160 for it.

OK...I know NOTHING about cars or headlights...but could somebody please explain where i can get these headlights on fogs? I'm hoping these headlights: http://www.lmperformance.com/63583/91.html are the ones needed, as they are fairly cheap. I like these in particular because they look more white instead of blue. I have a 2001 Maxima, and I have no idea what a HID kit is, or if I even need one. Here's what I'd like the car to LOOK like...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dnpbWo06o4

Thanks for any insight, as I am looking forward to learning more about my car.

2000_NMaxima already stated that the MAF was replaced, so maybe we can assume that's alright.

Air filter... make sure it's not black.
No vacuum leaks headed to bank 1? All the hoses connected? Correctly? Intake gasket ok?
O2 sensor would be the last thing, mainly because of the cost and lack of other codes.

I had a mechanic go through it but couldnt find a vacuum leak at all, every now and then it sounds like there is a leak. Also my gas milelage is terible. I checked the air filter and it looks clean. Where are the lines that run to bank 1? Thanks for the help guys!!

Would this thumping/growling sound be the rack and pinion or the pump?

I can't make topics on this forum which is kind of annoying so I guess this would be the best place to ask.

Would a 5 speed 2001 Maxima with 140,000 miles be too high for someone who plans on using the car as a daily driver? I know it depends on what has been done with the car but I would like to know generally if I would end up having to pay a lot to keep this car running.

There are members with 375k.. It all depends on how you have maintained your car. My 5.5 is currently at 136k and I am positive that she will run to a minimum of 200k.

fluid checked out ok, both at the pre purchase inspection a week ago, and by me the other day.

It's really only in 2nd gear, at more than 1/2 throttle, it doesn't have any issues shifting, there's no slippage or grinding, it's just a bit of a whine.

I have a question. I was wondering if a 3" exhaust line up to the manifold (including highflow cat and magnaflow muffler) would add a bit of hp on my 02 maxima or if I absolutely need to replace the manifold for headers too to see any improvement. There's literally no shop at all near where I live that want to install headers. They all seem to be happy to do the complete line, but headers are apparently a big no no. Also, how much is the average hp gain for a true (fender) CAI?

This is for an auto 02 maxima. It takes around 6.5sec for 0-60 all stock. With these modifications, I'd like to hit 6 sec dead but I'm probably overzealous.

edit : Oh yeah, also, any way to avoid the CEL after these mods ? I just paid nearly 2k to shut it up (new O2 sensors, new canister, new solenoid valve, etc)

Whining noise from the tranny signifies bearing/gear failure. I would just be prepared to spend some money on a rebuild. Of course, before you do this, you should have it checked out by a competent transmission specialist.

Bank 1 are the front three cylinders. When you pop off the engine cover (if you have one) your intake manifold splits into those that go to the front and those that go to the back.

There are likely to be vacuum lines coming from one or more of those tubes, and there are definitely some right after the throttle, and you want to follow them to make sure they have not cracked, corroded, or come off somehow.

ok so i just got a 00 maxima 5 speed this summer, and i ordered a weapon r short ram for it, they sent me the wrong one so i put my stock system back in and now it runs like complete ****, cold idle bounces between 600-900 rpms and is rough and if i drive without warming it up it feels like my wheels are egg shaped,o and there is almost no power at all, i checked all my vacuum hoses and im pretty sure they're hooked up correct i took it out and put it back in twice now and i reset the ecu, im baffled. any suggestions would be appreciated

Bank 1 is the right side, not the left. That is, the rear cylinders, not the front.

A bad MAF would generally throw codes for both banks being lean.

There are no vacuum lines that would cause just one bank to run lean, as pretty much everything is centralized to the UIM.

Given the bank 1 lean code, the terrible gas mileage, and the excessively rich condition when you accelerate, the first thing I'd check is the bank 1 upstream O2 sensor.

DOT 3 or above will be fine (except for DOT 5, of course).
