Hi,
I'm BobPezz a n00b to this forum and have LOTS of questions for you non-rookies. But I just wanted to introduce myself 1st. I have some experience with Maximas and IMHO they're great cars. I owned a 1st gen 1981 810 Maxima which ran forever and was a ball to drive (it blew the doors off many BMW's) but eventually the body rotted off the chassis. I recently upgraded from a 91 Camry V6 to a 2001 Maxima SE which has a few minor issues to fix. From browsing many of the postings here I know I'm in the right place to get good answers. So Thanx in advance for the help! Anyway, my first question concerns the speedometer sticking at approx. 75 MPH and above. What's the problem, and is it a fix that can be done by someone with reasonably good mechanical ability?

I was thinking of doing this, but wanted to see how it looks like before I do it. Pictures would be great. Thanks!

I've got a Stillen lip on my 2001 SE. However, it's a silver car and the spoiler is painted body color. FYI the lip is made from a semi gloss black urethane. There are pictures of the car in "My Garage" on this forum.

By any chance do you have gauge rings installed?

No, the car is basically "box stock".

Also, have a look at the link in my signature. I've developed a product that replaces the saggy spare tire cover - I'm assuming yours is soaked and useless by now.
Thanks dj,

Vise Grip got the job done. Bolt was't as badly stripped as it thought it was. Still looks a little marred but was able to take it off without complete shaving it round.

Still need to bleed the brakes though. Too cold out to suffer that 40 min task.

Can the fronts be bled without removing wheels? It'll save me at least a good 15+ minutes if i leave wheels on. Thanks again.

If you can get to the bleeder valve, then you can bleed without removing the wheels - but I'd be careful of the brake fluid, as it could eat right through the paint on your wheels.

Guys, I am looking to buy an 01-03 maxima. I am aware of the mid generation changes. My question for you is, what are the major service intervals on these cars? I know I was looking at a lexus IS300 a year ago and the 100k service is pretty brutally expensive. I didn't want to buy a car and have to funnel a ton of cash into it immediately after purchase.

Thanks.

100k service:

Platinum Spark plugs
Oil an filter
Air filter
Cabin Filter

Belts and stuff as needed, as usual.

If the vehicle hasn't been well maintained, it's probably good to replace the past-due long life coolant; it's good for 5 years or so, but many leave it in for 10, if you know what I mean.

There is no timing belt (which is the big ticket item on Hondas etc), and all the other crud people want to sell you with it, like the water pump and everything else they'll screw up.

If you're getting it done at a good, independent shop, it should be $200-300 for the plugs (2 hrs labor plus about $50 for parts), and the rest is standard maintenance.

Thanks Homey, I can do any work myself.. that isn't a problem at all. That sounds like pretty run of the mill maintenance. Ill factor that into the cost of purchase though.

I appreciate the information.

You're most welcome. Changing the transmission fluid or gear oil helps a bit at that mileage too, even though that's supposed to be "good for the life of the vehicle."

That's good advice as well. Maybe by lifetime they mean the lifetime of the trans fluid LOL.

Looking forward to getting a max and unloading my 01' 530i w/100k. That car goes through parts like $h!t through a goose.

Hey I have a question about my bose radio system in my 01 gle. I just bought the car and realized I have no sound coming from my speakers. I noticed the amp had been taken out so I bought a new one and put it in (the one in the back) and I still have no sound?? The radio seems to be working fine but I just can't get any sound out of the speakers. I took out the radio and noticed that there was any empty bay on the back with 3 out of 4 harnesses plugged in. Is this normal or should all 4 bays have a wiring harness plugged in? or Is there another amp in the car that I am missing? Any help would be greatly apprecaited thanks!

Get the 02-03 model. It has the 3.5l engine vs the 3.0l engine in the 00-01. It has HID's, standard. And it has other general cosmetic differences that are overall improvements over the 00-01.

There is only one amp that powers the speakers in your car. All the harnesses SHOULD be plugged into your radio.

Not correct. It's normal to have one disconnected if you don't have a CD changer.

Measurement of flex pipe (flex only) on 2000 Maxima?

Hi guys, new here but not new to car forums. Here goes:

I have a 2000 Nissan Maxima and the flex pipe needs to be changed (just the flex) - The pipe itself (minus the flex) is fine. So my issue is, I can get a flex for about $20-$30 rather than $350 for the entire unit. Only problem is I need the measurement of the flex. The diameter, length, and whatever else is needed!! If anyone can get me these measurements, I would greatly appreciate it. I called Nissan Canada and even my local Nissan Dealerships, obv they only look up part numbers and not specs, so if by chance any1 has the information or even ..... can check their local dealership, I would appreciate it!

You can email me directly at plasma_glow_XT@hotmail.com

thanks!

Hallo,
I greets fans of my favourite car at first. If I need help with something about my car I read on your forum, but now I need direct advice. I have two cars Nissan Maxima, but here in the Czech republic my cars look like the I30. We have not there effective accessories, but what can I do…
I have been adjust one of these cars – laminate, accessories etc. Now, when I finished general adjust of motor and automatic, I consider to change the exhaust. In CZ is not many options, so I look to eBay, but I need adice. I can not unnecessarily damane it and buy something to test is a very expensive fun J So I please for your advice what exhaust I should buy, of course at a acceptable price.
I ordered a header OBX V2, but I don´t know what to do now. I don´t want anything very noisy, because sometimes I drive with this car 1,000 miles per day and too loud exhaust wouldn´t be pleasant, but some power moreover wouldn´t be bad.
On second car I have last part of exhaust from I35, which is more pleasant there classic, which is original in CZ. This one I can order from Bosal, but what catalyst and middle part? What do you think about it?
Thanks for a advice J

Swap a different deck in there and go from there. I had three speakers go out at once one time when i had the Max. I bought a new deck thinking that for sure was the problem, but ended up being the speakers in my case.

Another n00b question to the wise,

Can just the rear tires be replaced? What if they are diff brand? Obviously, will be same size as fronts. Or is replacing all 4 at same time absolutely necessary. Fronts are not that worn and have plenty tread left on them.

Situation: fronts: 225/50R17 Cooper.
Rear: 225/70R17 also Cooper.

How that happened? Not sure. Lol bought the car like that and only realized the other day while trying to fill air.

Thanks as always.

As long as you match, not a problem. Have them balanced and rotated with the new install and you are set

An exhaust shop should be able to install a new pipe section without much cost. Or am I missing something here?

The guy I'm looking at wants $140 for just the flex pipe section and installation/labor. So $140 in total. I mean, if I can get a flex pipe for $3o (with measurements), installation is no more than $50-$80. Can't be over $100+ ....

So yeah... if any1's got measurements to the flex pipe, would be appreciated.

I have a 2K GXE that came with the 16inch rims. Now I found a set of rims I liked and they only come in 18x7.5" So I would have to get a set of 235x40x18 tires. Will they fit on my car without any issues? I dont want rubbing or anything

Muffler Advice

I recently replaced the mid-pipe with a stock piece from Monroe. At the time they showed me where the axle back pipe was rusting out but said it would last for a while longer. I just noticed a good sized (approx. 2" x 3") piece of rusted metal stuck in one of the exhaust tips. On removal I assume it's the inside of the muffler rotting out, since now the exhaust has a bit louder tone than stock. So I'm planing to get a SS replacement axle back muffler, I'm leaning toward the HKS Sport. It looks like a direct replacement, but before I spend the $$$ on an unknown part. What one would you guys recommend for the best build/fitment quality and a nice tone not much louder than stock?

if you're willing to pay $400 on just an axleback you might as well buy the SRS dual tip catback from off ebay...

Thanx for the suggestion, I know HKS is pricey. I could get a Megan catback for cheap $$$ too, but I've heard the quality/fit is suspect and they're LOUD! I'd jump on a Cattman 2 1/2" it sounded nice/quiet like the HKS, unfortunately, it's not made anymore and the 3" is a bit too loud for my taste. I want a quality muffler that will last, fit the stock mid-pipe and a tone not too much louder than stock. Not a "Fartcan" that'll crack/rust faster than a stock muffler.
