Valve adjustment 2001?

Has anyone done a valve adjustment via the shims? Or has anybody paid a dealer to do it? My 2001 3.0 DOHC has 110k on it and is ticking slighlty (but enough to warrant attention). I do not have the special tool for depressing the valve lifter like it says in the manual and do not have a dial caliper to measure the shims. What have others done? I called my dealer and they said they were hydraulic and could not be adjusted...lol..that tells me that I certainly wont let them work on it...if they do not know about the shims... I was Aircraft Mechanic for 20 years in the Air Force so atleast I know how to read...lol

How much has it costs to have a valve adjustment?..if any of you paid to get it done?

On cold starts I get clacking and this morning it was down right scary (30 degrees). Sounded like my valve train was coming apart, then as it warmed up it went from heavy to light pinging and then cleared up altogether.

Other symptoms:
Before it got this bad it used to howl a little on cold starts until warmed up. Last year my starter died and was replaced. This year the new starter is beginning to grind on cold mornings like this morning. Could this be high compression left over from advanced timing when the engine was warm? Also I had some moderate pinging this summer when engine got warm so I replaced MAF sensor which seemed to help, but perhaps the cooler weather fooled me to think it got better

Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks

2000 Maxima w/110Kmiles

I had the same problem last winter. I do all my own maintence and the dealer said it was from me not using a oil filter with a antidrain back valve. I started using Mobil1 $8 filter with antidrain back valve and have had no more noise this winter, its been 9 degrees outside and no noise when starting.

My 03' Maxima SE is making a funky rotten egg like smell, after hard acceleration. I have smelled when other Japanese cars have passed me on a 2lane. Our Maxima eats about a quart of oil per oil change, no leaks though. Any possibilites would be great, thanks.
Rotten eggs sounds like cats to me.

Oh, didn't realize you were talking about the dashboard and all. Why would you want to put older pieces in there just to change the color? I'd just dye the dash and misc other pieces and swap seats and door panels. You're going to spend a lot of money doing the whole entire interior.

Noises After Strut Replacement

Yesterday, I replaced all 4 stock struts with Tokico Blues. After I picked the car up from being aligned, I started noticing a noise coming from the rear passenger side wheel area when I went over bumps. The knock sounds similar to the trunk lid not being shut, and the resultant noise when you hit a bump. The knock occurs on the rear ends way back to the ground after a bump. It isn't particularly loud, or terrible sounding, but it definitely was not an issue before the change.

Are noises like this common after struts are replaced? If not, what is the most likely culprit - the bump stop, strut mount...etc. I realize I should have replaced all this yesterday, but the strut kits weren't in stock, and the OE looked to be in fine shape.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

HIDs on 2002's?

I'm thinking of buying a 2002 Maxima(trading in my 96SE). I have one Question, How are the HIDs on the 2002? Is the beam patten good? The car being a 2002, are the HID bulbs ready to blow? Do they light up the road comparable to german car?(well almost?)

Thanks.

I just had a bulb blow on mine (at 75k mi), and not only did it leave shards of glass inside the headlamp housing, it scalded the top part of the reflector. So in retrospect it's probably wise to swap out the bulbs.

To answer your other question, IMHO the HIDs are very good on dark roads, but if the road is well-lit you might not notice much improvement from a good set of halogens. The way they throw light on the road results in kind of a jagged edge on the sides, with an abrupt cut-off at the front. That seems to be a fundamental flaw with the open reflector headlights versus projectors, which have a much smoother pattern and more coverage (saw an '05/'06 LS430 the other night with projectors that lit up the road about 30 feet to either side). So compared to most German cars, these probably aren't as good. But they definitely look nice and high-end from the outside of the car, which is probably their main appeal to most people.

First of all, thx for the thought of somewhere where newbs can get some help..
My first question is does anybody know where or how i can come across some leather seats for my '00 Maxi Se and will 2003 and older (2001-2003)model seats fit my '00?

Second, can anyone with experience with this shed some light on it for me... I REALLY want a sunroof installed in my Max. I've heard/seen nothing good on this especially aftermarket, on these cars. Wat options are left or should i jus 4get the sunroof? Thx

Shakin,Rattlin and Rolling

Just a couple of quick ones, in the rear clunking at lower speeds sounds like the strut towers, wondering if this is a common problem. Secondly I have a vibration between 90-120km and the tires have been checked mulitple times, C.P.R on the brakes all around and all is well? Any ideas? Again could this come back to the struts? Lastly how do I get the privledges to participate in the regular forum? Thanks to all that answer

I'm interested in installing Hawk brake pads (either ceramic or HPS), but since I have extremely limited experience doing brake work, I wanted to have a trusted mechanic do the work. The only one I know wants $105 to change the pads and machine the rotors (this doesn't include the price of the pads). As far as I know, both my rotors and the pads I've been using are stock.

My question is, do the rotors really need to be machined, or is he just trying to get more money? My car has 76k miles on it, but I've only had it since 61k and I've only been moderately hard on the brakes in that time. There is a pulsing sometimes on longer stops from speeds of about 55+ mph, but a few ppl on here have said it might be a buildup of pad material. If all I need to do is change the pads, then I'd rather do it myself. But should I also get the rotors machined like this guy says?

Quick CV Axle Question

Time to change cv axles on my auto 2000 max. With no leaking from tranny axle seal, should I be concerned with causing a leak? Should I go ahead and replace these seals if they are okay since I'm already there? Thanks.

OK, second time this has happened:

- Engine stalled accelerating out of a turn at a stop light (first time was accelerating away from a stop light)
- Check Engine Soon light came on and is still on
- Car still starts, but only after ~ 10 seconds
- Tach is dead (at 0) regardless of throttle, speedo and other instruments OK
- Can sorta feel it missing at low throttle

Last time it happened the problem cleared itself (tach came back to life, start problems went away) after ~ a tank of gas, so I suspected a bad tank of gas (used a bottle of fuel system cleaner and filled up next tankful at an Exxon rather than a Sheetz). My last fill-up was at a 7-11/Citgo, and am at ~ 3/4-tank now.

Both times it happened, weather was "wet" in the AM - light rain last time but in the summer (was sunny when it stalled in PM), very foggy this time, but partly sunny in late AM when it stalled - so I'm also wondering if it might be intermittent electrical.

Will do, but will try to kill two birds with one stone .... Since I've had the battery for over 3 years now (since I bought the car, used, in July 2003) I'm gonna take the car to a shop for a new battery (and electrical system check) and have them pull the code(s) before and after.

[ My previous car ('94 SHO) had some flakey behavior late in its life that went away when I put a new, quality battery in it - might as well do something simple for the Max that's likely needed anyway. ]

Gotta say, I bought a used 2002 SE after owning a '94 SHO, and the difference in the headlights was literally night and day to me the first time I drove the Max at night. I have been doing a lot of night commuting (40 miles every AM) to try and avoid the Northern Virginia traffic, and the HIDs give me a vastly increased sense of safety compared to the SHO - far better pattern, brightness and consistency (AFAIC, the SHO was pretty much unsafe to drive at highway speed on a clear night, and downright scary in other weather conditions).

Newbie here... I bought a MAF adapter for a cone intake (I plan to get a K&N) off ebay, it's the black plastic kind with a little rubber gasket. Is there a writeup on this? I didn't check first, but now that I look, there's an awful lot of crap going on in the intake on the 5th gen. What do all those things do?

Edit: This is a stock 2001 SE.

I'm not exactly new here, but don't feel like starting a new thread. I know I saw a thread a long time ago (when the search was free) with a write-up of an OEM LSD install in a RS6F51A trans (02 max). If anybody could help I'd appreciate it.

It really is a simple part to change..just go to a part store and take a peek at one of the repair manuals..disconnect the connector...remove the clamp that holds it on the air duct ...remove the four bolts that attach it to the filter housing...thats about it.
